Dengue outbreak declared in Philippine capital's most populous city

Manila, Feb 15 (IANS): The Mayor of Quezon City, the most populous city in the capital region of the Philippines, declared a dengue outbreak on Saturday, citing a nearly 200 per cent surge in cases.

From January 1 to February 14, the city's health department recorded 1,769 dengue cases, nearly 200 per cent higher than last year, said Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Belmonte said 10, including eight minors, have died from the disease.

"Our declaration of a dengue outbreak ensures that we are on top of the situation, and we are doing everything we can to protect our residents from this deadly disease, especially our children," Belmonte said.

Fifty-eight per cent of the reported cases involve school-aged children aged five to 17, while 44 per cent are children aged one to 10.​..

HANOI The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) on February 21 reported that there are more than 43,000 dengue cases recorded all over the country as of February 15.

“The total number of dengue cases from January to February 15, 2025, well ahead of the usual wet or rainy season in June, is now at 43,732,” DOH said in a statement, as cited by Inquirer.

The agency noted that this is a 56% increase from the 27,995 cases logged in the same period last year.​..

The Department of Health (DOH) reported on Wednesday that the number of dengue cases in the first two months of this year went up by 73 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

The agency said it recorded a total of 62,313 dengue cases from January 1 to March 1 this year, 73 percent higher compared to the same period in 2024.

The three regions having the most number of cases are Calabarzon with 12,735 cases; National Capital Region with 11,291; and Central Luzon with 10,185.

The agency said that the case fatality rate this year is lower at 0.35 percent compared to 0.42 percent logged in 2024.​..

The Health Department of the Philippines has reported a staggering 73 percent rise in dengue cases during the first quarter of 2025, contributing to an outbreak that the World Health Organization estimates has resulted in nearly a million suspected cases worldwide.

This outbreak has also led to 159 dengue-related fatalities across 48 countries, as noted by the European Centre for Disease Control, which indicates that the disease has spread throughout Africa, the Americas, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific region.

In the Philippines, national records indicate that from January 1 to March 1, there have been 62,313 reported cases of dengue.

The case fatality rate has decreased to 0.35%, down from 0.42% the previous year.

San Lazaro Hospital, operated by the Department of Health in Manila, has admitted 453 dengue cases between January and February, including a one-year-old boy.

Dr. Albert Domingo, Assistant Secretary of the Philippine Department of Health, expressed that the surge in dengue cases was unexpected, stating, “This is unprecedented.”...​

THE scale of dengue crisis in the Philippines has reached the point wherein the lethal mosquito-borne disease has become endemic in the country, health experts said on Saturday.

Dr. Eric Tayag, former undersecretary of the Department of Health, said that over 400,000 dengue cases were recorded in 2024 alone, with more than 1,200 fatalities.

In Southeast Asia, the Philippines' dengue case fatality rate stands at 0.3 percent — significantly higher than Thailand's 0.01 percent...

Dengue death toll in Iloilo Province rises to 8 as cases soar to 1,431

​ILOILO – Dengue cases in this province have spiked to 1,431 from January 1 to April 19, representing an 82% increase compared to the same period last year.

The surge has also led to eight confirmed deaths, a rise from three fatalities recorded in 2024.

The latest victim, a 20-year-old female college student from Dueñas town, succumbed to the virus on April 10 after being transferred to the West Visayas State University Medical Center (WVSU-MC) for treatment....

WHILE the numbers have been declining in recent weeks, there have been more dengue cases recorded in 2025 compared to the same period last year, the Department of Health (DOH) said.

In a statement, the DOH reported that there are a total of 95,262 dengue cases reported from January to April 2025.

"This is 75 percent higher compared to the 54,556 dengue cases during the same period in 2024," said the DOH.

Majority of the dengue cases reported are in Calabarzon (17,754); National Capital Region (16,704); and Central Luzon (15,317).

On Thursday, the DOH reported that a total of 9,289 dengue cases were reported from March 16 to 29.

"This is 23 percent lower than the 12,050 cases recorded from March 2 to 15," said the health department.

And with the rainy season forthcoming, the DOH said the public must be prepared for the likelihood of a resurgence of dengue cases.​..

ILOILO – Dengue continues to exact a deadly toll in the province, with 14 lives lost and 3,705 cases recorded from January 1 to August 2 this year, the Iloilo Provincial Health Office (IPHO) reported.

Health officials warned that despite a slight drop in total cases compared to 2024, transmission remains relentless, with fresh outbreaks emerging in multiple towns.

In the past week alone, 243 new cases were recorded, and clustering of infections was detected in 80 barangays — a 10% increase from the previous week — signalling intensified localized outbreaks.

Oton logged the highest number of new cases for Week 31 with 27, followed by Janiuay (21), Tigbauan (18), Barotac Viejo (16), and Pototan (10).​..

QC alarmed over rising dengue cases

Quezon City has seen a 155 percent surge in dengue cases this year, with 6,872 cases recorded from 1 January to 17 August, according to the local government — which is a significant increase from the 2,503 cases reported during the same period last year.

The local government cited that children 10 and under are most at risk, accounting for 3,407 cases and 23 deaths.

The spike in local cases mirrors a nationwide increase reported by the Department of Health (DoH), which logged 15,091 dengue cases between 13 July and 26 July.

This 7 percent increase followed heavy monsoon rains and typhoons that hit the country in July...

The dengue death toll in Negros Occidental has reached nine, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported on Friday, August 22.

The number of dengue cases in the province from January 1 to August 16 have reached 4,093, the report also showed.

This represents a 28.91 percent increase, or 918 more cases, compared to the 3,175 cases recorded during the same period in 2024.​..

MANILA, Philippines — Dengue cases in Quezon City this year are 79.44 percent higher compared with the previous year, with 9,243 cases recorded from Jan. 1 to Oct. 20 compared to 5,151 cases during the same period in 2024, based on data from the city’s health monitoring unit.

According to a Facebook post by the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD), 35 of the city’s residents have died due to dengue this year as of Oct. 20, with four of them residents of Barangay Batasan Hills, the highest number of fatalities in all of the city’s the barangays.​..
