DAVAO CITY, Philippines, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least three children have died in a measles outbreak that hit two towns in southern Philippines, local authorities on Wednesday said.

The measles epidemic that hit Talaingod and Kapalong towns in Mindanao's Davao del Norte province came as the region is still reeling from rain-induced flooding and landslides that have already killed at least 15 people.

Over thirty people are also hospitalized due to the viral disease, and eight of them were confirmed to have contracted the disease, according to Basilio Libayao, mayor of the upland Talaingod town.

"What alarmed us was that even our town physician was not spared from the disease although he was lucky to have recovered from it," Libayao said.

The continuous rains and landslides hampered medical teams from reaching far-flung communities of this landlocked town, where most of the 20,000 inhabitants belonging to the Ata-Manobo tribe rely on crude farming and occasional hunting for subsistence, according to municipal health officer James Ian dela Cruz...

Measles outbreak hits Kapalong and Talaingod

DAVAO CITY, Jan.7 (PIA) ? Measles outbreak hit the towns of Kapalong and Talaingod in the province of Davao del Norte.

Data from the Provincial Health Office bared 29 persons in Kapalong and 21 persons in Talaingod were suspected to have measles.Even the municipal doctor of the said town, Dr. Ian James de la Cruz, was diagnosed to have measles too.

Talaingod Mayor Basilio Libayao immediately formed a team to check and monitor the health condition of residents in the far-flung barangays of his town. A number, mostly children, were sent to hospitals in nearby towns of Kapalong and Tagum, assisted by the town government.

Libayao, in a phone interview, bared that two children died of measles in Barangay Palma Gil...

Central Visayas warned of rise of measles cases

DUMAGUETE CITY Feb 17 (PIA) The Department of Health (DOH) region 7 has alerted the provinces of Siquijor, Negros Oriental and Cebu over an increase in number of measles cases.

Expanded Program Immunization (EPI) & Child Care Coordinator Dr. Naida Bautista of DOH-7 disclosed that Siquijor province has recorded 29 cases of measles as of last year. In January to first week of February this year, at least four children in provinces of Cebu and Negros Oriental had been reported to have measles.

With the increase number of cases of measles has prompted the DoH to conduct mass vaccinations in the whole month of April to prevent further spread of the disease...

Bulacan steps up to prevent spread of measles

CITY OF MALOLOS, Feb. 23, (PIA) - The provincial government of Bulacan is continuously at war with measles and encourages the Bulakenyos to take precautionary measures to prevent from acquiring the said virus although no outbreak is declared yet in the province.

Bulacan Gov. Wilhelmino M. Sy-Alvarado immediately gave a directive to the Provincial Public Health Office (PPHO) headed by Dr. Jocelyn Gomez to conduct an investigation and identify the necessary actions to be given to the three Dumagat families residing at Sitio Inuman, Brgy. San Isidro, city of San Jose Del Monte who were reported to be showing signs of measles.

Dr. Betzaida Banaag, city health officer of the City of San Jose del Monte said that seven of them were confined at the city hospital for immediate aid and blood serums from five patients were brought to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine for testing.

Irish San Pedro, Bulacan Provincial Surveillance officer said, reported measles cases totaled 25 from January to February this year from some areas of Baliwag, Marilao, Meycauayan, San Rafael, Calumpit, Balagtas, San Jose del Monte, and Pulilan...

DOH-7 strengthens measles advocacy with new confirmed cases

CEBU CITY, Mar 17 (PIA) - The Department of Health (DOH)-7 strengthens its advocacy campaign against the highly communicable disease as two new cases of measles have been confirmed in Central Visayas bringing to seven measles cases in the region since January this year.

DOH-7 Measles-Rubella campaign point person Dr. Nayda Bautista, bared the two new confirmed measles cases that surfaced in just one week came from Cebu.

?Just last week, only five confirmed measles cases were recorded but this week, two new cases were confirmed and both came from two highly-urbanized cities in Cebu,? according to Bautista during a recent PIA kapihan that tackled the measles disease.

The DOH is tripling its advocacy efforts against measles as some regions in the country are declaring an outbreak of the disease.

Measles is a highly communicable viral disease and can be spread through droplets from one person to the other by sneezing, coughing and close personal contact.

Manifestations of measles include generalized blotchy rash, lasting for three or more days, fever, and cough or runny nose.

?Outbreaks have already been declared in the National Capital Region and Regions 4, 9 and 11,? Bautista revealed.

Bautista however, said the incidence of measles in the region has declined compared to last year?s figure from January to mid-March where there were 10 confirmed cases.

Due to the rising incidence of measles in some parts of the country, the DOH is undertaking a one-month measles house-to-house vaccination campaign for children less than eight years old...

Measles surveillance shows 121 cases

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union April 14 (PIA1) ? The result of the measles surveillance operations conducted by the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit ? Department of Health ? Center for Health and Development 1 (RESU ? DOH-CHD 1) showed that there?s a total of 121 positive cases in Region 1 as of April 6, 2011.

According to this unit, 385 suspected cases were reported by different disease reporting units (DRUs) in the region broken down as follows: 257 in Pangasinan, 70 in La Union, Ilocos Sur ? 15, and Ilocos Norte ? 43.

Out of that 385 regional raw data, only 343 agreed to undergo laboratory and have samples taken. These samples were sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) for study and acnalysis.

As a result, 121 were found to be positive of the disease --113 in Pangasinan, 7 in La Union, and 1 in Ilocos Norte. Sixty-seven were found to be negative of the disease and 3 were equivocal or leading to the disease.

There were also five positive cases of Rubella ? commonly known as German measles ? four in Ilocos Sur and one in Pangasinan.

Data gathered were based on the standard case definition of the Philippine Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response. (ANL/MPA-PIA 1 La Union)

Blood samples taken from 18 measles suspects

PINUKPUK, Kalinga, April 18 (PIA) - - In the middle of the campaign ?Iligtas sa Tigdas ang Pinas,? 18 children in Barangay Limos, this town, were suspected of having the disease; blood samples were taken from them.

Provincial Epidemics and Surveillance Unit (PESU) officer Jose Pardito Jr said the patients manifested symptoms of skin rashes, conjunctivitis, fever, and colds. He noted though that the reports in Barangay Limos are sporadic cases, discounting a possible outbreak.

The report on measles suspect cases in Barangay Limos came two weeks after the April 4 launching of the nationwide door-to-door measles rubella supplemental immunization activity...

COTABATO, Philippines ? Health officers in Cotabato City fear a possible measles outbreak at evacuation centers amid two suspected cases of the disease.

Some 8,000 families were forced to leave their homes and transfer to evacuation centers as floods submerged Cotabato City, affecting over 25,000 families in 33 out of the city's 37 barangays.

Seven were reportedly killed in North Cotabato while another person is missing in Cotabato City due to the floods.

An estimated 140,000 people have been affected by the floods, more than half of the city's population.

Floodwaters have also entered the town proper.

A state of calamity was declared in Pikit, North Cotabato, Cotabato City and in Maguindanao last week following incessant rains. -- Report from ANC
