GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/16 June) ? Health authorities here have raised anew the alert level against the deadly dengue fever, which already claimed at least four lives during the last five months.

Dr. Jacinto Makilang, City Integrated Health Services Office (CIHSO) chief, said Thursday they recorded at least 143 confirmed dengue cases, including four deaths, in the city?s 26 barangays from January to May this year.

He said this year?s figures dropped by 37 cases or around 20 percent but the number of fatalities has increased by three cases compared to the same period last year.

Dengue cases down 42%,
15 die in Western Visayas

The Department of Health reported yesterday a drop of 42 percent in dengue cases in the Western Visayas, although it has recorded 15 deaths as of this month.

DOH recorded 1,087 dengue cases from January to June 4 in Region 6, compared to 2,078 in the same period of last year.

Negros Occidental topped the list of dengue cases with 489, and 189 cases in Bacolod City.

DOH regional director Ariel Valencia, however, said he noted a drop of 26 percent of dengue in Negros Occidental, compared to last year.

Despite a marked reduction in dengue cases in Region 6, Valencia said this does not mean complacency in the dengue campaign, especially now that the rainy season is on.

He stressed the need for local government units and the public to sustain the clean- up activities, aimed at destroying the breeding grounds of mosquitoes and prevent the spread of the dengue virus.

Valencia also warned the public that dengue is now a year-round health problem.

Records of the Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office showed that five persons have died of dengue, compared to two last year. There were 468 dengue cases recorded this year, compared to 559 last year.

Dengue cases increase

Dengue cases reported at the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) have more than doubled in the first half of the year.

Hospital records show that 347 cases and two deaths were reported from January to June compared to 133 cases and three deaths reported in the same period last year.

There are more dengue cases but fewer deaths due to the disease, said Dr. Eduardo Sedoripa, CCMC hospital chief.

?This trend reflects aggressive and good dengue case management,? he said.

The trend shows that ?people are becoming more aware and they are getting immediate medical attention.?

Unlike in previous years, CCMC is better prepared to address the city?s dengue situation, said the hospital chief.

?Dengue patients need fluid replacement. That is why we are preparing intravenous fluids,? Sedoripa said...

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) has declared a dengue outbreak in 5 of 6 municipalities in Batanes.

The DOH has reported 1 death due to dengue and 901 cases (as of June 25) compared to only 1 case last year, said DOH-National Epidemiology chief Dr. Eric Tayag.

The municipalities affected are Sabtang (63 cases), Basco (487 cases), Mahatao (18), Uyugan (47), and Itbayat (286)...

There were 34,090 dengue cases recorded nationwide from January 1 to July 9, 2011.

The figure is 13.82% lower compared to the 39,556 cases recorded in the same period last year.

A total of 198 people have died of dengue this year, according to the DOH.

50 persons die of dengue, 2,869 afflicted in Ilocos Sur from Jan. 2007 to July 2011

VIGAN CITY, August 4 (PIA) -- The death toll from dengue hemorraghic fever rose to 50 while the number of afflicted persons reached 2,869 from January 2007 to July 2011 in Ilocos Sur, according to the Provincial Health Office.


Gov. Luis ?Chavit? Singson has waged an all - out war against dengue as he directed the Department of Health, Department of Education, Department of Interior and Local Government, Philippine National Police and other government agencies to conduct anti-dengue drive, including fogging operations in all schools and barangays affected by the presence of these aedes egipti mosquitoes in those areas.


The provincial government has conducted an emergency conference with concerned agencies, including Non- Governmental Organizations (NGO?s) at the Capitol last week to plan and implement immediately strategies and safety nets to prevent the spread of the dreaded disease.


The PHO reported that eight (8) persons, mostly children died of dengue, and 1,077 others were afflicted from January to July 30 this year. One (1) died in Sto. Domingo with 77 cases, three (3) in Cabugao with 64 cases, two (2) in Sta. Catalina and one (1) in Sta. Lucia with 32 cases, and one (1) each in Sta. Cruz and Narvacan.


Provincial Health Officer Dr. Carmeliza Singson said that the situation of dengue cases in various hospitals especially at Gabriela Silang General Hospital in the Heritage City is very alarming as he ordered Barangay Health Workers and Health Educators to help in the Education, Information and Cleanliness Drive in all barangays especially in the First District.


Meanwhile, Provincial Board Member Jeremias Singson, chairman of JCS Medical Mission, has urged local officials not to politicize and not too vindictive in extending Philhealth cards to their constituents. ?Our indigent kababayan are complaining that some mayors ignore their constituents in the barangays where they lost in the recent local elections.?


The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) should extend their immediate response to our constituents who are in need of medicines and financial assistance, the former Vice- Governor said. (ANL/BPP-PIA 1 Ilocos Sur)

LAOAG CITY?Mayor Michael Fari?as has recommended a state of calamity to be declared in the city due to a growing number of dengue cases.

In a special staff meeting on Thursday, city health officer Renato Mateo said the current number of dengue cases is near outbreak level.

?We expect to breach the outbreak level but not necessarily a calamity level. In my opinion, we can declare it as an outbreak level,? he said.

According to the city health office, 186 residents have fallen ill due to dengue from January to July this year. The province recorded five dengue-related deaths this year.

Mateo, however, said the current number of dengue cases was still lower than what was reported during the same period last year. He could not immediately provide previous dengue records.

Fari?as said he will ask the city council to immediately declare a state of calamity so the city can use its calamity fund to help victims and buy additional fogging machines.

He said the city government can use its local disaster risk and reduction management fund as a quick response fund for relief and recovery efforts.

Before Fari?as? recommendation for a citywide calamity state declaration, village officials had declared a state of calamity in their villages when residents, most of them children, started contracting fever as a result of dengue. Cristina Arzadon, Inquirer Northern Luzon

Alarm raised over spike in dengue cases in MM

MANILA, Philippines - From January to July this year, the Department of Health (DoH) has recorded 38,876 dengue cases and 226 deaths.

Speaking to ANC's "Dateline Philippines Sunday," DOH National Epidemiology Center chief Dr. Eric Tayag said this is significantly lower compared to last year, owing mainly to early consultations and improved reporting.

"In the national scope, we have a 25.8% decrease this year, but dengue peaks during August to September, the perfect time it spreads in other areas."

Despite this, the Health department has voiced alarm over the 135% spike in dengue cases in the National Capital Region, or a total of 9,493 recorded dengue cases. Most of the cases were recorded in Quezon City, Manila and Caloocan.

The DOH warned the number could further balloon in the coming months.

Dengue watch

Earlier this month, Dingras Ilocos Norte was placed under a state of calamity. Ilocos Sur was also placed under a state of calamity as the number of cases grew at an alarming rate.

Tayag said the DOH is now keeping a close watch on dengue hotspots, where there has been an increasing number of cases for two consecutive weeks...

No dengue epidemic in QC despite hike in cases

Dengue cases in Quezon City went up by more than 100 percent in the first seven months of the year compared to the same period in 2010.

City health officer Dr. Antonieta Inumerable told the Inquirer yesterday that from January to July this year, a total of 2,770 cases were reported, up from 1,069 during the same period in 2010.

Similarly, the number of deaths due to the mosquito-borne disease went up this year to 21, nearly double the 12 deaths reported in the first seven months of 2010, according to the city health department?s epidemiology and surveillance unit.

However, despite the rise in the number of cases and dengue-related deaths, the disease has yet to reach epidemic proportions in the city, Inumerable said...

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/08 August) ? The number of confirmed deaths due to dengue fever in Region 12 or Southwestern Mindanao continued to rise in the past several weeks and has reached 11 as of end-July.

Jane Ventura, health education officer of the Department of Health (DOH)-Region 12, said the agency?s regional epidemiology and surveillance unit (RESU) reported that dengue cases in the region from January to July this year has so far reached 1,192, increasing by 510 cases since the onset of the rainy season in early June.

She said the total number of dengue cases have gone down by 83 percent compared to last year but the confirmed deaths have almost doubled in just about a month or from six cases last June 25 to 11 cases as of the last week of July.

In seven months last year, DOH-12 recorded 7,143 cases of dengue and at least 30 related deaths.

Region 12 covers the provinces of North Cotabato, South Cotabato Sarangani, and Sultan Kudarat and the cities of General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan, and Cotabato...

NDRRMC: Dengue kills 6 in Antipolo; Ilocos death toll now 3708/11/2011 | 08:10 AM


At least six people were confirmed dead due to dengue in one village in Antipolo City in Rizal province, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported.

In an Aug. 10 report posted on its website Thursday, the NDRRMC said the six fatalities were among 456 people affected by dengue.

"Out of the 456, six persons are confirmed dead. All are from Barangay Cupang," it said.

SAN FERNANDO CITY?Health officials in La Union have recommended to the provincial board the declaration of a state of calamity in the province due to the increasing number of dengue fever patients.

Dr. Hector Be?as, provincial health officer, said the declaration won?t mean, however, that the province cannot handle the increasing number of cases.

?We can handle the situation. We are declaring a state of calamity to fund any extra activity or logistics,? he said.

He said La Union has recorded 2,028 dengue cases and seven deaths since January, almost equal to the 2,387 cases and seven deaths from January to December last year.

A state of calamity was also declared in La Union last year. In 2009, the province had only 792 cases and five deaths.

Last week, health officials in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur reported increasing numbers of dengue fever patients. Dengue cases are also increasing in Pangasinan...

6,000 new dengue cases in 2 weeks: DOH

MANILA, Philippines - In just 2 weeks, 6,000 new dengue cases nationwide have been reported by the Department of Health.

Dr. Eric Tayag, head of the DOH's National Epidemiology Center, said there were 45,333 dengue cases and 267 deaths from the illness from January 1 to August 6 this year. The figure is 33.5% lower compared to last year.

The DOH, however, is still monitoring a continuing increase in the number of dengue cases in Ilocos, Central Luzon, and Southern Luzon

Dengue cases up 73% in Luzon

While the number of dengue cases in the entire country has dropped by a third, in Luzon it has surged by more than 73 percent when compared to last year, the Department of Health (DoH) said on Tuesday.

In a report, the DoH also said the number of dengue cases in Metro Manila had nearly doubled from 5,416 covering the period January to August 2010 to 10,487 in the same period this year.

The capital recorded 37 deaths due to dengue during the same period last year but this rose to 70 so far this year, the DoH said...

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Two or three dengue virus-infected children are sharing a single bed in a pediatric ward ? this is the current scenario at the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital (JBLMRH).

Dr. Religaya Rivera, chief of the Pediatrics Department of the JBLMRH, said their ward can only accommodate 50 patients.

JBLMRH Chief Venancio Banzon said they had to get hospital beds from other buildings to accommodate the growing number of dengue patients from Pampanga alone.

Based on their latest census, there are about 108 dengue patients at the regional hospital whose ages range from six months old to 13 years old.

Patients are from towns of Mabalacat, San Simon, Apalit, Mexico, Candaba, Minalin and from Angeles City...

DepEd strengthens efforts against dengue

QUEZON CITY, Aug 26 (PIA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) is advising all school administrators and officials to work closely with concerned stakeholders in their communities to solve the problem on dengue.


DepEd Undersecretary for Programs and Project Yolanda Quijano, during the Communication and News Exchange (CNEX) Forum at the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), said the department has also issued Memorandum No. 152, series 2011 before the opening of classes this year, which emphasizes the urgency of the anti-dengue drive in schools where students become most vulnerable.


The memorandum specifies measures that should be undertaken to protect the school populace from dengue.


Quijano furthered that the education department is working closely with the Department of Health (DOH) through the 4S strategy, which stands for Search and destroy; Seek early consultation; Self-protective measures; and Say "no" to indiscriminate fogging.


Close collaboration should also be made with the Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), and Municipal Health Offices (MHOs) on the conduct of information campaign against dengue, maintenance of environment sanitation in the schools and in the communities, and referral of students or personnel with symptoms of dengue.


According to the DOH, a total of 56,005 dengue cases were reported from the various cities and municipalities from January to August this year.

Most of the cases were from the National Capital Region (22.45%), Region III (18.70%), and Region IV-A (14.02%). (PND/ APB/ PIA-GHQ)

Health authorities have recorded a total of 373 deaths related to the killer disease dengue so far this year, with Metro Manila accounting for most of the cases.

The Department of Health said there were 63,741 dengue cases from January to September 3 this year, a 27.08-percent drop from 87,409 cases and 586 deaths in the same period last year.
