Citing records showing increased carbon dioxide levels in the area, state volcanologists warned visitors and tourists Friday against venturing near the crater of Taal Volcano ? a popular summer tourist attraction in Batangas province.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) head Renato Solidum Jr. said carbon dioxide levels in March were more than four times higher that those recorded last year.

Taal Volcano?s (14?00.1?N, 120?59.6?E) seismic network recorded five (5) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Field observation and measurements conducted at the western sector inside the Main Crater Lake (via Alas-as) on 29 March 2011 showed that steaming activity at the thermal area was weak. The water level receded from 0.50 m to 0.36 m. The water temperature remained constant at 29.8<SUP>?</SUP>C and the pH value is at 2.93 compared to the last reading of 2.92 on 15 March 2011. Gas measurements conducted at Taal Main Crater Lake last January and March 2011showed CO<SUB>2</SUB> emission flux increased from 2,250 tonnes per day (t/d) to 4,670 t/d. The remarkable increase in C0<SUB>2</SUB> concentration indicates anomalous gas release from the magma at depth.Result of the ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted around the Volcano Island last 02-09 February 2011 showed that volcano edifice is slightly inflated as compared with the 15-23 December 2010 survey.

PHIVOLCS reiterates Alert Level 1 and its recommendation over Taal Volcano. At present, no imminent eruption is indicated. However, the public is advised to strictly observe some safety precautions. PHIVOLCS reminds the general public that the Main Crater should remain strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. Inhaling CO2 gas can cause negative effects such as headache, dizziness, muscular weakness and fainting. Breathing air with high concentration can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation. The northern portion of the Main Crater rim in the vicinity of Daang Kastila trail, may also be dangerous when increase steam emission is reactivated along existing fissures. Furthermore, the public is also reminded that entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended.

This is a notice for the raising of the alert status of Taal Volcano (14?00.1?N, 120?59.6?E) from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 2.


Following the issuance of the volcano advisory on 31 March 2011, the monitored parameters have shown significant changes as indicated by the following observations:
  1. Seismic activity at Taal Volcano continued to worsen. The number of volcanic earthquakes detected gradually rose and the depths of the plotted quakes are becoming shallow (1.0-4.0 km). There is also an increase in the number of perceptible quakes. During the past 24 hours, two (2) quakes were felt at the Volcano Island with Intensities ranging from II to III and one of them was accompanied by rumbling sounds. Twenty-one (21) volcanic quakes were detected by the seismic network for the past 24 hours.
  2. Gas measurements conducted at Taal Main Crater Lake yielded CO<SUB>2</SUB> emission flux of 1,875 tonnes per day (t/d) in February 2011 and 4,670 t/d during the last week of March 2011. The remarkable increase in C0<SUB>2</SUB>concentration indicates its release from the magma at depth.
  3. Result of the ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted around the Volcano Island this week showed that volcano edifice is still inflated as compared with February 2011 survey.
  4. Steaming activities at the northern and northeast sides of the Main Crater occasionally intensified. Sometimes, intensification of steaming activity is accompanied by audible hissing sounds.
In view of the above observations at Taal Volcano and the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by CO<SUB>2</SUB> being released in Main Crater Lake and increase in seismic activity, Taal Volcano?s status is now raised to Alert Level 2. With this alert status, the present activities could eventually lead to an eruption. Hence, PHIVOLCS advises the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro (1965 Eruption Site) are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation. In addition, it is reminded that entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. 7,000 defy Taal Volcano warning

TAAL Volcano simmered down yesterday after rattling the area with several dozen tremors and prompting warnings for residents to evacuate.
Nearly 100 families fled, but the rest of the 7,000 residents had so far ignored Alert Level 2 issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) declaring the area a danger zone.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the entire volcano island was a ?permanent danger zone? and should not be settled.

Taal is one of the most unstable of the country?s 22 known active volcanoes with 33 recorded eruptions, the last one in 1977. The lake surrounding the crater prevented deaths in 1977 and during other eruptions, protecting outlying areas from lava flows.

MANILA, Philippines?Authorities Monday warned residents to prepare to evacuate at a moment?s notice as restive Taal Volcano continued to generate quakes and toxic gases.

?We recommended to them to prepare for evacuation and to monitor the growing unrest of Taal Volcano,? volcanologist July Sabit said in a phone interview Monday.

He noted that there had been no sign of intensified volcanic activities just yet to upgrade to Alert Level 3, which means an eruption is possible within days.

Despite that, Phivolcs described the volcano?s status as ?alarming? and said communities surrounding Taal should always be prepared.

BATANGAS CITY? The chief of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has urged the local government here to start drawing up a long-term relocation plan for people living on Taal volcano as he warned that the entire volcano island could be ?obliterated? in case of an eruption.

?Sometimes nature will prevail, the people have to leave so why not invest now in the long term to avoid [endangering] people?s lives,? Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum told a meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council of Batangas on Monday.

Solidum said Taal?s present activity has been observed to be similar to previous eruptions in 1965-1970 and 1976-1977 wherein the entire volcano island was ?totally obliterated.?

Solidum told Batangas officials it must be shown to the people living there how dangerous it is to live on the island because of what happened in the past.

<TABLE width=800 align=center><TBODY><TR><TD>On 9 April 2011, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the Alert Level status of Taal Volcano to Alert Level 2. The most alarming parameter detected was a spectacular increase in the rate of carbon dioxide emissions from the main crater lake (MCL) where CO<SUB>2</SUB> fluxes have more than doubled between January and March 2011. The fact that lake temperatures did not increase suggest that the discharge rate of hydrothermal waters remains unchanged and that this CO<SUB>2</SUB> increase is not related to a change in hydrodynamic processes within the hydrothermal system (i.e. opening of fracture) but has a deeper magmatic origin.

and may even cause damage to vegetation.​

The entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and permanent

settlement in the island is strictly prohibited.​

You are hereby directed to monitor the situation and undertake precautionary​


measures in your area of responsibility (AOR). Likewise, the public and the Disaster Risk​

Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) are advised to take appropriate actions.

In order to better inform/warn communities, you are reminded to disseminate these
through local/community leaders and through your local media, including community radio
stations. Conduct press briefings as often as needed. This local effort will complement and
reinforce efforts at the national level. Emphasis should be on proactive actions ? evacuation
rather than rescue.​

Let us untiringly aim for zero casualties.

Submit report on actions taken thereof.

MANILA , Philippines?The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has urged the vulnerable population living near Taal Volcano to evacuate immediately as the quakes produced by the restive volcano have increased in numbers and in intensity.

?We recommend the evacuation of children, old persons, and pregnant women,? Phivolcs research specialist Ed Villacorte said. He noted that able-bodied men have stayed in the villages near the volcano.

?This means the volcano is still very active and Alert Level 2 remains hoisted over it,? he said.

Although the quakes have escalated, Villacorte said the agency had no plans to raise the alert level to 3 at present. ?We will only do that if the quakes have reached Intensity IV to V,? he said.

A total of 232 families or 1,373 persons have so far evacuated to the mainland towns of San Nicolas, Balete and Mataas na Kahoy, or about double the number of families who had initially left the island since Alert Level 2 was hoisted on April 9.

Of about 5,000 residents of the island, those who decided to evacuate are mostly staying with their relatives.

Palace urges evacuation of residents near restive Taal volcano

MANILA, Philippines -- Malaca?ang yesterday urged residents near the Taal volcano to evacuate the area, saying that the government would implement a forced evacuation if and when necessary.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said there are government personnel on the ground, particularly from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) who will assist them in their needs while their area is still in danger from Taal volcano?s possible eruption.

?We are now requesting the residents near Taal volcano to evacuate their residences on a voluntary basis,? Lacierda said.

He, however, said the government will do whatever it can to save their lives, including a forced evacuation if necessary.

?Mahalaga sa amin ang safety ng bawat taong nakatira malapit sa Taal volcano [The safety of residents near Taal volcano is important to us],? Lacierda said.

?At a certain point, kung talagang mag-mamatigas sila [if they are going to be hard-headed]? and the pending eruption will post a danger to the lives of these people, we will have to forcibly evacuate them,? he added.

(UPDATE) President warns residents near Taal volcano of 'imminent danger'

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - President Benigno Aquino III today ordered concerned authorities to inform the remaining 1,000 residents near Taal volcano of the "imminent danger" to their safety.

"Everybody should be apprised. The expectations here have to be made very, very clear that there is really imminent danger," Aquino said in a briefing.

Aquino gave the directive to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) after its executive director, retired Gen. Benito Ramos, reported to him that Taal volcano "may erupt anytime."

Taal Volcano?s (14.0000?N, 120.9833?E) seismic network recorded thirteen (13) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. One (1) of these events, which occurred at 3:17 PM yesterday, was felt at Intensity III in Barangay Calauit on the southeastern part of the island accompanied by rumbling sound and Intensity I at Barangay Pira-piraso at the northeastern side of the island. Field observation and measurements conducted at the eastern sector inside the Main Crater Lake yesterday showed that the temperature at the Main Crater Lake increased from 30.5<SUP>?</SUP>C to 31.5<SUP>?</SUP>C. Result of the ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted around the Volcano Island last 05-11 April 2011 showed that volcano edifice is slightly inflated as compared with the 02-09 February 2011 survey.


Alert Level 2 is hoisted over Taal Volcano with the interpretation that magma has been intruding towards the surface, as manifested by CO<SUB>2</SUB> being released in the Main Crater Lake and sustained seismic activity. Hence, PHIVOLCS advises the public that the Main Crater, Daang Kastila Trail and Mt. Tabaro (1965 -1977 Eruption Site) are strictly off-limits because sudden hazardous steam-driven explosions may occur and high concentrations of toxic gases may accumulate. Breathing air with high concentration of gases can be lethal to human, animals and even cause damage to vegetation. In addition, it is reminded that entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), and permanent settlement in the island is strictly not recommended. DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Taal Volcano?s activity and any new significant development will be immediately relayed to all concerned.

Taal Volcano?s (14.0000?N, 120.9833?E) seismic network recorded six (6) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Field measurements conducted on 05 May 2011 at the eastern sector inside the Main Crater Lake showed that the water temperature increased from 31.5<SUP>?</SUP>C to 32.0<SUP>?</SUP>C, the water became more acidic with pH value decreasing from 3.09 to 2.94 and the water level further receded to 0.19 meters from the 0.23 meters as compared to the last reading on 19 April 2011. Results of the ground deformation survey (precise leveling) conducted around the Volcano Island last 26-28 April 2011 and 05-11 April 2011 showed that the volcano edifice is slightly inflated as compared with the 02-09 February 2011 survey...
