MANILA: The Philippines reported a record in new coronavirus cases on Friday and warned the trend could continue as restrictions were relaxed in the capital region to try to spur economic activity.

The health ministry confirmed 17,231 new cases and 317 fatalities, the highest daily death toll in four months. Deaths reached more 1.8% of total cases, bringing the August average to 1.5%, versus 1.9% in July.

With more than 1.8 million cases and 31,198 deaths, the Philippines has one of the highest coronavirus tolls in Asia...

...More than 26% of samples taken tested positive, the country's highest positivity rate so far, while active cases hit 123,251, a four-month record.

Hospitals were filling up, with 73% of the country's intensive care capacity already utilised and 61% of isolation beds occupied, government data showed...

Philippines logs over 20,000 new COVID-19 cases for 3rd straight day

The Philippines recorded over 20,000 new COVID-19 cases for the third consecutive day on Sunday, September 5.

In its bulletin on Sunday,the Department of Health (DOH) announced 20,019 new cases, bringing the country's total caseload to 2,080,984.

The September 5 tally is the 4th highest one-day count so far. It follows the 20,310 reported on Friday, September 3, and the 20,741 logged on Saturday, September 4.

The DOH also reported 173 new deaths due to the coronavirus disease, bringing the death toll to 34,234...
