DUMAGUETE CITY ?- At least three persons died and 200 are confined at a hospital following a diarrhea outbreak in three northern towns of Negros Oriental.
Dr. Socrates Villamor, chief of the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance (Pesu) of the health department, said the diarrhea cases were first reported in early October, but the number of patients who came down with the symptoms has abruptly escalated to an alarming rate over the last two weeks.
Most cases come from Bindoy town followed by Ayungon and Tayasan.
Initial investigation by the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (Resu) showed that water sources especially in the hinterlands of the three towns are open springs, which are vulnerable to contamination.
Samples from various water sources are positive with ecoli bacteria, Villamor said.
Villamor urged the public especially the affected towns to boil their drinking water.
The same outbreak hit Guihulngan and its nearby towns including Tayasan few months ago, which claimed the lives of 10 persons.(Sunnex)
