MANILA, Philippines - With rains still likely to come in the ?ber" months, the Navotas City government will launch Monday an intensified drive against dengue.

Radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported Sunday afternoon that Navotas City mayor Tobias Tiangco ordered city health workers and village officials to conduct door-to-door information campaigns.

The information drives will focus on the need to keep surroundings clean and dry to prevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from breeding.

Also, Tiangco ordered inspections of schools and business establishments to make sure the surroundings will not allow mosquitoes to breed.

City workers will also regularly clean canals as part of the city's "Zero Dengue Breeding Place" goal, the report said. - GMANews.TV

Three areas in Pangasinan on dengue alert

? One city and two towns in Pangasinan are battling against the further spread of dengue.

This after the Department of Health monitored last July a major increase in the number of suspected dengue victims which has reached 720 cases.

In Dagupan City, the city health office monitored 35 suspected dengue cases for the month of August. Even though the figure was far from the epidemic threshold of 66 cases, massive fogging operation is being implemented within the city.

City health officer Dr. Leonard Carbonell said the city is now closely monitoring signs of dengue within its borders, especially after the adjacent town of Calasiao declared an outbreak last week.

The neighboring town of Malasiqui, on the other hand, also declared a dengue alert after the DOH recorded 80 suspected dengue cases.

In spite of the outbreak and dengue alert however, Pangasinan?s provincial health office told the public that everything is still under control.
Through a massive information drive, the province aims to minimize dengue victims by 20 per 100,000 ratio in 2010.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO--Eighteen people in Central Luzon, mostly children, have died from the mosquito-borne virus dengue since January this year, almost double the death toll for the same period last year, the regional Department of Health said in a report here Thursday.

The deaths occurred in Pampanga and Nueva Ecija, five each, and Bataan and Bulacan, fourth each, according to the DOH?s regional epidemiology and surveillance unit.

But dengue patients tripled from 780 to 2,636, with Pampanga having the most number of cases at 1,009.

MANILA, Philippines -- Dengue has claimed the lives of 33 people and afflicted more than 2,000 residents in Quezon City this year, the chief of the city?s health office said Tuesday.

However, Dr. Antonietta Inumerable said it was premature to declare an outbreak, saying the incidence of the mosquito-borne disease in the city was still manageable.

Inumerable said they are closely monitoring at least 20 Quezon City neighborhoods where dengue cases have increased at alarming levels over the past few weeks.

She said from January to September this year, a total of 2,244 residents were hospitalized after showing symptoms commonly associated with dengue, such as vomiting and high fever.

This figure, she said, is nearly double the number of cases recorded last year.

?There?s no need to panic. We are doing our best to monitor dengue hotspots and help residents avoid being afflicted by the disease,? she told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net).

Inumerable said she has also ordered the monitoring of students who reportedly contracted the ailment in their schools, including those from the Ramon Magsaysay High School in Cubao.

Meanwhile, several barangay (villages) have asked the city council to allow them to use their calamity funds to purchase equipment and chemicals to fight the spread of dengue in their respective communities.

Officials of Barangay Amihan filed a resolution seeking the use of 70 percent of their calamity fund for their anti-dengue campaign.

CEBU CITY, Philippines? A city councilor here has questioned the conflicting records of dengue fever cases in Cebu.

Councilor Edwin Jagmoc said the figures at the Cebu City Health Department (CHD) are different from those of the barangays.

He called on the council?s health committee and the city health office to check on the discrepancy.

"There must be truthful information rather than coming up with different reports. It will mislead the public [into thinking that]that the dengue cases in Cebu have decreased if compared with last year?s data," he said.

The city health department earlier reported a reduction in dengue cases to 973 cases and 38 deaths for the period from January to August this year compared to last year?s 1,004 cases and 21 deaths.

But the data from the barangays show a significantly higher number of cases, Mr. Jagmoc said.

In Barangay Tisa, for instance, local officials recorded 55 cases and three deaths, but there were only 45 cases from the area listed at the city health office.

In Barangay Luz, only 16 cases were reflected at the health office, but the barangay recorded 21 cases. Records in other barangays of Cebu City show the same discrepancy, Mr. Jagmoc said.

The city health office?s environmental and sanitation division has been conducting massive spraying and an information campaign to combat dengue in 21 barangays, which have the highest number of cases.

MANILA, Philippines ? The number of dengue cases in Metro Manila drastically went up from January to August this year, compared to the same period in 2007. Four barangays in the area were also being monitored as ?hotspots,? a health department official said Wednesday.

Of all the regions nationwide, the highest recorded number of dengue cases so far this year was reported in the metropolis, National Epidemiology Center chief Dr. Enrique Tayag said.

As of Aug. 23, there were 8,386 cases compared to only 3,106 at about the same time last year, he added.

At the same time, however, Tayag assured the public that there was no outbreak of the disease anywhere in the country, although four barangays in Metro Manila have been declared as hotspots: Barangays Baesa and Batasan Hills in Quezon City, Barangay Parang in Marikina City and Barangay 177 in Caloocan City.

Hotspots are areas where there had been a continuous rise in dengue cases in the last four weeks.

Sought for a possible explanation for the increase in cases this year, Tayag said it was ?possibly due to [the] simultaneous circulation of three dengue serotypes.?

Still, the number of dengue fever cases nationwide this year was slightly lower compared to 2007, he added.

As of Aug. 23, there were 24,794 cases, down from the 28,431 cases reported last year, Tayag said.

Of this year?s cases, there were 257 fatalities compared to 276 last year, according to the health official.

Dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes that bite during the day, breeding in stagnant water. The health department said in its web site that dengue fever ?is preventable but is prevalent in urban centers? with a high population density and inadequate water supply, and poor solid waste collection and storage.

Dengue cases nationwide 13% lower than last year - DOH

Despite a sharp increase in dengue cases in Metro Manila, the Department of Health (DOH) noted the cases from January 1 to August 23 this year are 13 percent lower than the same period last year.

According to the recent dengue surveillance report of the DOH-National Epidemiology Center (NEC), a total of 24,794 cases were
admitted in different sentinel hospitals nationwide from the said period this year compared to the 28,431 cases last year.

The report said the regions with highest number of cases were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 8,386; Region 3, 2,719; Region 7, 2,352; Region 4-A, 2,339; Region 11, 1,722; and Region 9, 1,539.

The DOH also noted several dengue hotspots in NCR and in Cebu. These were Baesa and Batasan Hills in Quezon City, Parang in Marikina; Barangay 177 in Kalookan for NCR; and in Cebu, Barangay Labangon, Marigondon in Lapu-Lapu City and Looc in Danao City.

This year's recorded deaths of 257 are also lower compared to the 276 deaths on the same period in 2007.

Region 7 posted the highest number of deaths with 83 followed by NCR with 56; Region 3, 26; Region 4-A, 21; and Region 1 with 14 deaths.

The DOH-NEC is closely monitoring the cluster of dengue in the said areas if the number will continue to rise in the following days.

The agency earlier noted more than 100 percent increase in dengue cases in NCR with 8,386 cases from January 1 to August 23 this year compared to the 3,106 cases on the same period last year.

In NCR, Quezon City has the highest number of cases with 2,078 followed by Manila, 1,736; Kalookan, 1,187; Valenzuela, 569; Pasig, 407 and Taguig, 331.

The DOH has alerted local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila on rise of dengue cases this year.

It reminded barangay health departments to be rigid on the promotion of the 4-S against dengue campaign to the barangay level.

Residents were also asked to observe the 'Operation Taob' reminder which directs them to turn over empty bottles, cans, vases and other objects which can store water and become breeding places for dengue mosquitoes.(

--> SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga ? The Department of Health in Central Luzon reported yesterday that 40 persons, mostly girls under 15 years of age, have died of mosquito-caused dengue fever in the region this year.


?It?s rather high,? nurse Marilou Pajarillaga of the DOH?s regional epidiomology service unit told The Star.


Latest records have indicated 4,768 dengue cases in Central Luzon so far this year, even as Pajarillaga noted three dengue strains affecting the victims.
Pajarillaga said experts have yet to come out with some explanation on the fact that most of the fatalities are girls below 15 years old.
She cited statistics showing that the deaths this year include four girls within the age bracket one to five years, 12 in the six to 10 bracket, 10 in the 11 to 15 bracket, three each in the 16 to 20 and the 21 to 25 brackets, and two aged more than 25.
This, amid figures showing only two boys in the fatalities under the one to five-year-old bracket, three in the six to 10 bracket, and one in the 11 to 15 bracket. No males above 15 years of age was reported to have died of dengue in the region so far this year.
Pajarillaga said that since January, Pampanga topped the list of the number of dengue cases at 1,838, followed by Bulacan with 1,195, Nueva Ecija with 740, Zambales with 393, Tarlac with 336, Bataan with 247, and Aurora with only 19.

Dengue cases in Central Luzon inch higher in 2008

San Fernando City, Pampanga (6 November) -- The number of dengue cases in Central Luzon is more alarming for the year 2008 than in the previous year.

This was disclosed by Dr. Rodora Cruz, chief, epidemiology division of the Department of Health (DOH) in Region III during the Regional Inter-Agency Committee on Environmental Health (RIACEH) meeting held recently at the Regional Government Center in Maimpis, City of San Fernando, Pampanga.

She said that the dengue problem is alarming due to the unplanned and uncontrolled urbanization, problems related to work, increased travel of population and inadequate and delayed response to epidemic.

Dengue is endemic in the country and there are 100 tropical and sub-tropical countries affected by it. There is no specific treatment for it and it spreads rapidly affecting mostly children. However, it can affect persons as young as zero month and as old as 69, Cruz said.

She added that in 2008, there is an epidemic in Central Luzon especially in the province of Pampanga which has the most number of cases followed by Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac and Aurora.

In their campaign "Puksain ang Kiti-Kiti, Sugpuin ang Dengue" to combat the outbreak in the region, Cruz said that multi-sectoral approach is being done by the DOH wherein the community leaders, religious groups, students, media associations, information officers, teachers, non government organizations, civic organizations and local government units are being tapped and clustered for easy access and implementation and monitoring of activities against dengue.

The campaign makes use of color codes to indicate the status of the area namely, white, no case clustering; green, there is clustering of cases and more than two cases in a barangay; and red, there is an outbreak in an area wherein the number of cases is more than that of expected range.

According to Cruz, the four (4) S of the DOH anti-dengue campaign are search and destroy; seek early diagnosis and treatment, self-protection and say no to indiscriminate fogging. She also encouraged the RIACEH members to renew their commitment to help disseminate information to eradicate the worsening problem of dengue cases in the region. (PIA-Pampanga)

TUGUEGARAO, Philippines ? After successfully suppressing the incidence of rabies cases here, city health officials are now bracing for a possible dengue outbreak.

Officials said the number of dengue cases swelled last month, killing a five-year old resident. Thirty-five others, including another child, were taken to hospitals due to the deadly viral disease.

?This is probably the highest incidence (in the province) in all the months of the year," city health officer Dr. James Guzman was quoted by local media as saying.

Dengue or hemorrhagic fever, which was previously believed to be a seasonal epidemic during and shortly after the rainy season, was reported by Health Secretary Francisco Duque ?to be a disease that afflicts people all year round."

The disease is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito which occurs in the morning for several hours after daybreak, and in the late afternoon for several hours before dark.

It can be prevented by frequently checking and removing clean stagnant waters from where mosquitoes are likely to breed.

Persons afflicted with dengue usually experience symptoms that include prolonged extremely high fever, nausea and vomiting, headache, and skin rashes.

The number of dengue cases in Metro Manila has more than doubled compared to last year due to continuous rainfall, the Department of Health reported yesterday.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said they have recorded a total of 11,161 dengue cases, including 71 deaths, in various hospitals in Metro Manila from January to October this year.

Based on the Disease Surveillance Report of the DOH?s National Epidemiology Center (NEC), the recorded dengue cases in the National Capital Region (NCR) was 118.4 percent higher than the figure during the same period in 2007.

But Duque said dengue incidence nationwide was 16.2 percent lower than last year.

?A total of 32,882 dengue cases were admitted to different sentinel hospitals nationwide which is way below the 39,225 cases last year,? he noted.

Duque said dengue cases exceeded and reached epidemic threshold in the early weeks of the year.

The clustering of dengue cases that could lead to a possible outbreak were previously observed in several barangays in Sampaloc and Sta. Mesa in Manila, as well as in several areas in Caloocan and Malabon.

Metro Manila recorded the highest number of cases and accounted for 34 percent of the total cases nationwide.

Except for Malabon,San Juan and Pateros, all the cities and municipalities in Metro Manila reported deaths due to dengue. Manila, Caloocan, Quezon City and Pasig reported the biggest number of cases.

Duque earlier blamed global warming for the increasing incidence of dengue and other diseases in the country.

Medical experts urged the public to take appropriate measures to avoid the disease because the threat of dengue outbreak remains, particularly during the rainy season.

Basak-San Nicolas boy 49th casualty of dengue

CEBU - A 13-year-old boy from sitio Brotherhood in barangay Basak-San Nicolas died a few days ago after he suffered from dengue hemorrhagic fever, bringing to 49 the total number of dengue-related casualties since January of this year.

Dorenda Macasucol, assistant chief of the City Epidemiology Surveillance and Statistics Unit, said the boy was not taken immediately to the hospital during the first 24 hours he was having fever.

?Gidala-dala ra man niya ang hilanat. Duha ka adlaw sa wala pa kuno mamatay ang bata, mora pa kuno og nangayo?g pasaylo sa iyang yaya nga usahay makasala siya,? Macasucol said.

Although the dengue cases from January to November 22 this year have already reached 1,062, the figure is still very much lower compared to 1,775 for the same period last year.

But the total dengue-related deaths last year reached only 39.

CEBU CITY, Philippines - Almost half of the dengue fatalities in Cebu City from January to November this year were minors, according to the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit of the Cebu City Health Office.

Genie Leen Velarde, who heads the anti-dengue task force of the mayor's management team, said Cebu City health authorities recorded 50 dengue-related deaths of which 24 were school kids aged five to seven years.

Of that same figure, 19 are below five years old and seven are 17 years old or older.

In line with this, Velarde said the Cebu City government will revive the Junior Dengue Brigade to maximize its anti-dengue campaign on the grade school level.

Dr. Raymund Ogan, city dengue coordinator, explained that schoolchildren are vulnerable to the dengue virus due to their active exposure to the elements, particularly ponds of water that are breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Velarde said they already started recruiting selected students and teenagers in the different schools and barangays (villages) to comprise the members of the Junior Dengue Brigade.

She said the MMT, the City Health Office and the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation have been conducting seminars on dengue prevention in Banawa Elementary School since last month and in Cebu City National Science High School on December 2.

Velarde also said the deaths due to dengue cases this year is higher compared to last year's number of 44 deaths.

But she said dengue cases in Cebu City declined to 1,076 cases from January to November this year compared to the 1,873 cases in the same period last year.

Velarde said the decline in dengue cases in Cebu City was in part due to the anti-dengue programs conducted by the Cebu City government that included the weekly ?pulong-pulong? (gatherings) in different sitios (districts) as well as video presentations and TV ads.

Cebu City officials earlier urged the barangay officials to intensify their anti-dengue campaign in order to reduce the incidence of dengue cases within their areas.

Naval, Biliran (22 December) -- The death of a five-year old boy, a suspected dengue patient, who died in the Emergency Room (ER) of the Biliran Provincial Hospital (BPH) at 2:15 pm on December 19, 2008, was the first casualty of the suspected dengue outbreak that occurred in Barangay Sto. Nino, a coastal barangay in Naval located a few meters away from the provincial hospital.

Based on findings released by a personnel of the BPH ER, Kyle Mark Gallosa died of dengue hemorrhagic and dengue shock.

In an emergency medical mission in Barangay Sto. Nino conducted by the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Naval on December 21, 2008 led by Naval Mayor Susan V. Parilla together with Dr. Fernando B. Montejo, Municipal Health Officer of the Rural Health Unit and other health workers of the Naval RHU, out of the 63 residents with fever who underwent medical check-up, 16 were recommended for confinement at the BPH because of the low platelet count in their blood level.

On the same date, Jerry A. Enriquez, Municipal Local Government Operations Officer of Naval convened the Barangay Disaster Coordination Council (BDCC) of Barangay Sto. Nino together with Chairman Arsenia Sabonsolin and the council members urging for a house to house campaign to clean their surroundings and their respective households particularly in the affected areas.

Based on the records of the BPH, there were 28 suspected dengue patients from Barangay Sto. Nino who were admitted since December 19, 2008 up to December 22, 2008.

As of today, there are eight suspected dengue patients who were referred to the Eastern Visayas Medical Center (EVRMC) in Tacloban City for further medication.

It was learned that the center of the suspected dengue outbreak in Barangay Sto. Nino was in Sitio Sabang and at the back of the Sto. Nino Elementary School. The said areas are planted to nipa.

It was also learned that there were other suspected dengue patients from Sto. Nino who were not included in the hospital record because they consulted for medical check-up with a private medical doctor prior to the occurrence of the reported suspected dengue outbreak in the barangay.

Likewise today, the barangay council of Barangay Sto. Nino passed Resolution No. 108 series of 2008 declaring Barangay Sto. Nino under a state of calamity and further setting aside the amount of P10,000.00 from their calamity fund as financial assistance to the affected families in the barangay.

Meanwhile, both the provincial government of Biliran and the municipal government of Naval have extended assistance to the families of suspected dengue patients by providing free medicines, transportation, some financial assistance whose patients were admitted in a hospital in Tacloban City.

On the other hand, Barangay Sto. Nino Chairman Sabonsolin appealed to kindhearted individuals to give some assistance to the affected families since most of them belong to the underprivileged members in the community. (PIA-Biliran) [top]

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines--A five-year-old boy has died while several others have been taken ill due to dengue fever in Naval town, Biliran.

The lone fatality was identified as Kyle Mark Gallosa, who died while being treated at the provincial hospital on Friday, said Dr. Salvacio Salas, representative of the regional office of the Department of Health in Biliran.

"Overall, we have one fatality with 29 others afflicted with dengue fever," Salas said on Monday.

At least 17 of them were confined at the Biliran provincial hospital and at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban City.

The spate of dengue fever cases started on December 1 with a single case in Barangay (Village) Sto. Ni?o, 1.5 kilometers from the town proper, Salas said on Monday.

The health authorities said that a pool of stagnant water located at the back of the Sto. Ni?o Elementary School might have been the breeding place for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which carries the virus that causes the dengue fever.

Most of the victims were school children. The youngest resident of the village who was afflicted with dengue was a two-year-old while the eldest victim was aged 26.

Salas, however, said that the dengue outbreak in the village has been contained with the intervention of the provincial and municipal governments.

Salas said that Biliran Governor Rogelio Espina donated fogging reagents and had sent a team from the provincial health office.

Naval Mayor Susan Parilla also directed that the stagnant water be pumped out to the nearby river, she added.

Health Regional Director Adelaida Asperin said on Monday that the spread of dengue could easily be contained if people in the community would observe environmental sanitation.

Asperin urged the public to throw away containers that could retain water to remove breeding places for the mosquito.

Dengue fever, if not treated early, could lead to death. Among the symptoms of the disease are persistent fever, muscle pain and skin rashes.

The health department is now addressing the dengue outbreak in Naval, Biliran after 33 residents were reportedly affected.

Dr. Nicolas Bautista of the Regional Epidemiologist of the Department of Health (DOH) Region 8 said the health authorities are responding to contain the dengue outbreak in Barangay Sto. Ni?o.

"The report of the cases of dengue started last December 22, and because of the fast surveillance, we already detected that there is such kind of outbreak in the area,? Bautista said.

Bautista said the DOH representative based in Biliran is the one coordinating the action against the outbreak.

He added that DOH-Region 8 is now preparing medicine assistance to Biliran. Likewise, it is also waiting for other needs that the Biliran Health officials may require.

Some patients are already in the hospital for medical treatment. In the latest report, 33 people were affected by dengue. Dengue also claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy.

Bautista hopes that the number of patients suffering dengue will not increase.

In the meantime, residents of Barangay Sto. Ni?o who have fever were urged to immediately seek medical attention. It is usually after the fever when the hemorrhagic symptoms occur.

Also, patients are advised to drink plenty of fluid in order to avoid dehydration.

Meanwhile, the public is advised to always remember the ?4S? in the prevention of dengue outbreak: Search and destroy mosquito-breeding sites; Self-protection measures; Seeking early treatment; and Saying no to indiscriminate fogging.

Eastern Visayas DOH confirms dengue outbreak

The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas has confirmed that there is a dengue outbreak in Barangay Sto. Ni?o in Naval town, Biliran province.

Dr. Nicolas Bautista, DOH regional epidemiologist, said health workers in the region have already started coordinating with the health department's national office after detecting the dengue outbreak last December 22.

Bautista said the DOH-Eastern Visayas have started preparing medicine that will be distributed to the affected residents of Barangay Sto. Ni?o.

He said a 15-year-old boy had died due to dengue in the village. Another 33 villagers have also been hospitalized due to dengue, he added.

"We are hoping that no more patients will be added," the DOH official said.

Bautista, meantime, advised Barangay Sto. Ni?o residents to immediately seek medical attention in case of high fever. He also advised villagers with fever to drink plenty of fluid to avoid dehydration.
