Dengue death toll in Cebu now 34

At least 34 people, mostly children, have died due to the mosquito-borne dengue disease in the city since January of this year, the City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit (CESSU) revealed.

CESSU Assistant Head Durinda Macasocol said the figure is still lower than the 49 recorded deaths on the same period of last year. So far 1,670 persons have been confined in different hospitals in Cebu City since January after they were bitten by dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Macasocol said health officials are now implementing another way to minimize, if not to totally eliminate, the problem of dengue virus through the new procedure of applying chemicals to curtains and mosquito nets.

She explained that the health officials will go to the barangays and will ask the constituents of the place to bring their clean curtains and mosquito nets to be soaked into a basin of water laced with chemicals.

?One the strategies we are conducting to help prevent dengue fever infection is the impregnation of curtains and mosquito nets with chemicals that will kill the adult aedes,? she said, referring to the dengue-carrying mosquito aedes aegypti.

Macasocol explained that the chemical that they are using has been proven very effective against mosquitoes. #

January-October dengue cases in Western Visayas recorded at 3,574

by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (12 November) -- The Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health, Center for Health Development-Western Visayas, reported that a total of 3,574 dengue cases were admitted to different sentinel hospitals in Region VI from January 1 to October 3, 2009.

The RESU report disclosed that the Province of Negros Occ. and Bacolod City got the highest admission of cases, while the City and Province of Iloilo got the highest number of recorded deaths.

Dengue cases in Negros Occidental was recorded at 760 with 14 deaths, and Bacolod City with 848 cases and 7 deaths; while Iloilo City has 802 cases with 24 deaths and Iloilo Province- 646 cases and 13 recorded deaths. For Antique- 133 cases and 1 death; Capiz- 179 cases and 3 deaths; Guimaras-68 cases and 1 death; and Aklan with 75 cases only.

Children below ten are most affected, the RESU report disclosed.

The DOH is continuously advising the public to properly dispose of their tin cans, empty bottles, used tires and other containers so that these do not become artificial mosquito-breeding places.

Dengue is a viral disease common during rainy season, and is transmitted by the bite of an infected aedes mosquito.

Aedes mosquitoes are considered ?day biters? with two peaks of biting activities, one at sunrise and another before sunset.

The public is urged to make it a habit to sustain the cleaning of the surroundings, especially the inside portions of the house, the DOH said. (PIA)

Caloocan reports 47% drop in dengue cases
By WILLIE L. CATAPAT
November 24, 2009, 3:58pm

Cases of dengue in Caloocan City dropped by 47 percent this year, highlighting the success of the anti-dengue program of the local government and the Department of Health (DoH) in the locality.

Mayor Enrico Echiverri said for the period until Nov. 15 this year, the Caloocan Health Department identified a total of 1,012 dengue cases compared to 1,897 cases last year.

Twelve deaths were also recorded, which were significantly lower compared to the 20 dengue-related deaths last year.

Echiverri said Caloocan City?s cumulative fatality rate of 1.0 percent is also within the allowable limit imposed by the DoH.

?The number of those admitted for dengue at different reporting institutions and health centers has been lessened by almost half the number of the potentially deadly mosquito-borne dengue fever during the same 11-month period last year,? Echiverri said.

The mayor, however, said although these indices were lower than last year, preventive measures should not be relaxed as dengue fever cases are still being recorded in neighboring cities and municipalities.

City health officer Dr. Raquel So-Sayo said the decrease could be attributed to the use of anti-larval medicine before the peak of the mosquito breeding season this year, the clustering of affected barangays and the massive anti-dengue information campaign being pushed by the city health department.

So-Sayo said among the sentinel reporting institutions in the city, the Manila Central University Hospital recorded the highest number of cases with 150 or 14.8 percent.

This was followed by the President Diosdado Macapagal Memorial Medical Center with 134 or 13.2 percent nd the Nodado General Hospital in Camarin with 25 dengue cases or 2.5 percent.

So-Sayo advised residents to maintain environmental sanitation by covering water drums and pails and to replace water in flower vases regularly.

CHO: 44 died of dengue in 2009
Written by: Fusilero , Kristianne
Monday, 04 January 2010

THE CITY Health Office revealed that dengue claimed 44 lives in Davao City all of last year.

?It will then increase this year if Davaoe?os would not maintain cleanliness in their surroundings,? city health officer Dr. Josephine J. Villafuerte told the Times.

Villafuerte said the only way to lessen the number of deaths is to clean the surroundings especially in swampy areas where Aedes aegypti mosquitoes lay their eggs. She said the people should not be complacent when dealing with weeding out the dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
Most of the casualties contracted the dengue hemorrhagic fever twice. She said the mutation of dengue had developed and the manifestation was more severe than the first time they got dengue.

A total of 3,092 dengue cases were recorded by the office last year. In a Times report earlier, the number of dengue cases surged to 31 percent during the first seven months last year compare to the whole year of 2008.

In the data from the said office as of January to August last year, there were already a total of 2,488 dengue cases. As recorded: January (157), February (183), March (250), April (298), May (325), June (437), July (455), and August (383).

Villafuerte said the city government has been constantly monitoring and educating the public particularly in dengue-prone areas such as Talomo, Buhangin and Agdao.

?Prevention is thus important,? Villlafuerte said.
The Department of Health advisory urges the public to cover drums and pails at all times to prevent mosquitoes from breeding, clean all containers once a week and scrub the sides to remove mosquito eggs, clean gutters of leaves and debris which become fertile grounds for mosquitoes to breed, and collect all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles and other items that can collect and hold water.

Dengue claims 21 Negrenses; anti-dengue campaign starts

Negros Occ. (6 January) -- The Provincial Health Office announced the death of 21 Negrenses due to dengue in 2009 as the all-year-round campaign against the dreaded disease starts this month.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Luisa Efren said there were 1,392 dengue cases last year and a 50 percent rise in mortality was noted compared to the year 2008 where 1,192 cases were recorded with 11 deaths.

The increase in death, she said, could be due to delayed consultation and treatment and poor access to the nearest medical facility.

Dengue used to be a seasonal disease usually during rainy season only, now the office has to engage in a whole-year-round campaign because of the unpredictability of the weather which she hinted, could be caused by climate change.

On top of the list of what the people should do is to "identify the breeding places and destroy them," he told PIA.

These places are usually stagnant water in tires, cans, and plants. Stored water should be covered and houses and the community should join hands in cleaning the surroundings.

She also said the 4S in fighting dengue will help bring down dengue cases. These are: 1. Search and destroy the breeding places of mosquitoes 2. Self-protection- wear long sleeves and long pants to minimize skin exposure 3. Seek early treatment and 4. Say no to indiscriminate fogging.

A person with fever should seek medical help after two days and should not wait for three days as if she or he has dengue, the disease could complicate and put the patient's life at risk. (PIA-LOL)

Dengue cases up by 43%, 39 deaths in Region 2

Tuguegarao City (8 January) -- The Department of Health (DOH) Region 2 has recorded 39 deaths due to dengue in Cagayan Valley Region.

Based on the reported cases, from January to December 15, 2009, there were 2,089 dengue cases reported, a 43 percent increase as compared to 1,176 cases reported in 2008 of the same period.

The report shows that Cagayan province posted the highest number of cases of 42 percent, seconded by Isabela with 41 percent, 14 percent from Nueva Vizcaya and only 3 percent was recorded from Quirino province while no reported cases from the province of Batanes.

Out of these, 2 cities and 1 municipality were enlisted as hotspots of dengue after posting high percentage of dengue cases. Santiago City has 17 percent followed by Baggao, Cagayan with 11 percent and Tuguegarao City with 10 percent of the total cases in Cagayan Valley.

The areas to where most of the fatalities were recorded are in Cagayan province with Tuguegarao City as the lead with 14 deaths.

Because of this, Dr. Marianne Lynn de Laza of DOH said they are conducting a stepped up drive against the spread of dengue in the enlisted hotspots in the region.

De Laza said the early arrival of the rainy season and the severe wet weather conditions in the latter part of last year are attributed to the upsurge of dengue cases in the region.

With this, the health officials are doing massive information campaign and to continue give education, a heightened campaign to make sure residents keep their surroundings clean and dry. (Oliver B./PIA 2)
