Dengue kills 7 in ARMM

COTABATO City, Philippines - Seven people have died due to dengue in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) from January 1 to July 10 this year, the regional health department said Thursday.

ARMM regional Health Secretary Kadil Sinolinding Jr. said they have been continuously educating residents in far-flung areas on how to curb the spread of dengue and how to prevent getting afflicted with mosquito-borne diseases.

Palawan guv gives P1M to combat spread of dengue as cases up to 1,076

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, July 11 -? Governor Jose Alvarez has provided P1 million for the Provincial Health Office (PHO) to combat and the management of dengue fever cases in the province.
Gov. Alvarez also directed the PHO to strictly monitor the municipalities with high dengue cases and reported deaths to prevent further increase and prevent any outbreak of this viral disease.
This as the PHO reported 1,076 dengue cases from January to June 30 this year.

Dengue suspect cases leading cause of morbidity in Kalinga

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, July 17 (PIA) -? Health authorities here have intensified eradication efforts against aedis mosquitoes after the Provincial Epidemics and Surveillance Unit (PESU) monitoring report showed that dengue-suspect cases top the causes of morbidity in the province.

Other causes include gastro-enteritis and typhoid fever, which are attributed to the rains, the same report showed.

From the PESU monitoring report, dengue-suspect cases in the province from January-July 11 this year shoot-up to 958 compared to 349 in the same period last year.The highest number of cases was recorded in Tabuk City with 687 followed by Pinukpuk municipality with 133.

The Provincial Health office (PHO) has declared two death cases from dengue based on laboratory confirmation...

Higher dengue cases noted in Surigao Norte?s mining towns

SURIGAO CITY (MindaNews/24 July) ? Most of the dengue cases this year in Surigao del Norte have been recorded in three mining towns, according to Carmilito C. Mantong, provincial supervising sanitary inspector of the Provincial Health Office.

Of the 181 cases from January to June 18, 66 occurred in Claver, 33 in Tubod and 16 in Placer.

The figure for January to June 18 is just 10 cases lower than the 191 cases recorded last year for the whole province.

Mantong attributed the high incidence of dengue in these towns to the presence of old tires owned by the mining firms where the mosquitoes would lay eggs...

Dengue cases rise in Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines ? While the number of dengue cases in the country decreased over the year, Visayas and Mindanao are the exception to the overall trend.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday, July 31, reported a 7.7% drop in the cases of dengue from 67,339 in July 2012 to 62,156 today.

DOH Secretary Enrique Ona noted the significant decline of dengue cases in Luzon. In the National Capital Region, cases of the infectious disease went down by 69% based on DOH data. The region recorded the highest decline in the entire country.

The Visayas and Mindanao, however, reported a surge of dengue cases. The uptick was pegged at 53% in Visayas and 44% in Mindanao...

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, July 31 (PIA) -- Dengue cases in Soccsksargen Region or Region 12 has risen by 205 percent, according to a report from the Department of Health (DOH) ? 12.

Record from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit 12 showed that, as of June 20 reported dengue cases in the area have already reached 7,221. At the same time last year, the region only recorded 2,368 dengue cases...

Comment - Press Release from the Philippines DOH. They show a reduction in cases when compared to the revised case figures from last year. But when compared to the figures released at this time last year, the reduction is not so obvious. On July 14th, 2012, a total of 51,597 cases were reported at that time with about 3,000 new cases per week - extrapolating to approximately 58,000 cases by the end of July. Comparing unrevised figures, this year is slightly higher at 62,000. 328 fatalities were reported by July 14th 2012 compared to this year's 263 to date. - Ro

DENGUE REMAINS LOWER COMPARED LAST YEAR; NCR CASES DROP BY 69%

The Department of Health (DOH) today reported that as of July 13, the total number of dengue cases in the country has reached 62,156 but this remains 7.7% lower compared to the same period last year when 67,339 cases were reported.

?There is an over-all decline to the significant decrease in Luzon compared to the previous year when the cases dropped by 40% from 42,605 to 25,502,? Secretary Enrique Ona explained, adding that the National Capital Region posted the highest decrease among all regions from 13,434 to 4,143 or a 69% decrease.

The DOH also reported that, on the other hand, the Visayas and Mindanao posted 53% and 44% increase, respectively. The increase was noted during the first half of the year when the areas recorded higher amounts of precipitation compared to the previous years. It was also possible that a "new" predominant circulating strain caused the increase.

With dengue, individuals get life-long protection to a particular strain one at a time. Since the Dengue virus has four stereotypes or strains then individuals can become infected up to four times in their lifetime. Thus, when one of these strains replaces what has previously circulated, then previously infected individuals acquire new infections again due to this "new" strain. However, such increases are also brought about by poor or inadequate mosquito control where communities most likely failed to get rid of potential breeding sites.

The Health Chief urged local governments to step up their drives against dengue as more rains will herald increased mosquito population that thrive in stagnant water and thus, spread the virus everywhere. The DOH has re-launched the 4 o'clock habit strategy through collective community efforts of searching for and eliminating mosquito breeding sites very 4:00 PM and onwards at least once every week.

The number of deaths was also lower this year from 435 to 263 or 40% decrease. For either year, dengue remained prominently milder or if serious, was easily manageable using new treatment guidelines that now focus on early fluid replacement and management.

The DOH awaits the introduction of dengue vaccines that will primarily target children even as it continues to find new ways of controlling outbreaks. It is closely monitoring the results of the nationwide application of Ovi-larvicidal traps in school and community-settings together with DOST, DEPED and DILG. The proper use of OL traps as well as their continued maintenance determine effective mosquito surveillance and mosquito control. OL traps should complement all existing means of mosquito control and should not be used as sole means of controlling dengue.

Dengue cases continue to increase

DESPITE efforts of the Department of Health (DOH), dengue cases still continue to increase in the Cordillera Administration Region.

Center for Health Development-Local Health Systems Division officer-in-charge Nicolas Gordo revealed a 31-percentage point increase of patients from January to August 3 compared to last year's same period.

He said based on the reports from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (Resu), a total of 3,682 dengue cases were listed as compared to last year's number of cases at 2,807.

Gordo said among the cases, there were eight deaths as of August 3.

ALARMING INCREASE | DOH monitors 2,420 dengue cases with 9 deaths in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY ? The number of dengue hemorrhagic fever cases in Eastern Visayas more than doubled this year at 2,420 cases with nine deaths from January to August 23, the Department of Health-Center for Health Development in Eastern Visayas noted.

DOH program manager for vector-borne disease control program Leonido P. Olobia said that for the entire 2012 the health agency recorded 1,052 cases with seven deaths. She did not give out the number of cases for the period of January to August last year.

Olobia attributed the alarming increase to the ?low community participation? in anti-dengue drive, particularly in the elimination of Aedes aegypti mosquito-breeding places...

DOH: Dengue claims 47 lives in Central Mindanao

KIDAPAWAN CITY - The Department of Health reported Friday that dengue cases in Central Mindanao has already claimed the lives of 47 persons since January this year, or an alarming 219 percent higher as compared to the same period last year.

NEIGHBORS of 18-year-old Fernando Porcerada, a resident of barangay Hipodromo, Cebu City were unaware that he was sick with dengue for the past few days.

In a press briefing at Cebu City Hall yesterday, Ygonia said the city recorded 1,569 cases as of last month.
This was 38 percent lower than the 2,559 cases and eight deaths recorded for the same period last year.
Barangay Guadalupe ranked the highest with 115 cases followed by Talamban with 106 and Tisa with 92 cases.
Barangays Agsungot, Lusaran, Paril, Pung-ol, Sinsin, Sudlon II and Toong had no recorded dengue cases.

DOH, CAR LGUs implement 4S to combat rise of dengue cases

Dengue cases up 342%

DENGUE cases in Western Visayas soared by 342% to 6,030 in the first half of 2013 compared to 1,363 cases in the same period last year.

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth-6) said it paid almost P39 million to dengue patients in the region from January to June 2013.

A total of 4,953 dengue cases were reported in Negros Occidental as of August 31, 2013, records at the Provincial Health Office (PHO) showed.
Records also showed that there were 22 fatalities in the province, including Bacolod City with five deaths; cities of Talisay, Sagay and Victorias and Murcia town with two each; and one each in the cities of Bago, Silay, San Carlos, Himamaylan, and Sipalay and towns of Binalbagan, EB Magalona, Pulupandan and Calatrava.

Dengue now included in Philhealth case rates

AS cases of dengue continue to rise, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) has included dengue in their new case rate packages to be implemented starting September 1, 2011.

This was announced by Philhealth President Rey B. Aquino last week, saying the agency will now shift from the fee-for-service to case rates for common medical and surgical cases including dengue.

Department of Health regional director Ariel Valencia said the Philhealth announcement is a welcome development and families of dengue patients may now have the option to go and seek dengue medical services in any private hospitals using their Philhealth privileges.

CAR DENGUE CASES INCREASE

THE regional Department of Health (DOH) in Cordillera reminded the public to always clean their surroundings and to get rid of possible dengue mosquito breeding sites after dengue cases in the region remain high. Dr. Alexei Marrero, Dengue Control Program Coordinator of the DOH Center for Health and Development-Cordillera (DOH-CHD-CAR), disclosed that records from the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit showed that there were 5,761 recorded dengue cases from January to August 31 of this year alone. Marrero said that this figure is 43 percent higher than the 4,039 dengue cases recorded in the region during the same period last year.

Dengue incidents up in Dagupan

DAGUPAN CITY, Sept 16 (PIA ) - The City Health Office here said a four-year-old child died from dengue while incidents continue to rise from January to August.

Dr. Leonard Carbonell, city health officer, said dengue has become prevalent in highly-urbanized areas like Dagupan causing incidents to rise.

Dengue claimed the life of a four-year old child from barangay Lasip Grande in July.

Records show that dengue cases rose to 358 from January to August compared to the 312 cases in the same period last year.

Villages with the highest dengue cases are Barangays Bonuan Gueset, Bonuan Boquig, Pantal, Lasip Grande and the central business district...

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday reported that there are already close to 120,000 cases of dengue that have been recorded in the first 36 weeks of the year.

In a statement, the DOH said they have already recorded 117,658 dengue cases have been reported from January 1 to September 7.

Most of the cases, the DOH said, came from Western Visayas (14.28 percent), Mimaropa (13.98 percent), Central Visayas (9.38 percent), Eastern Visayas (7.98 percent), and Central Luzon (7.82 percent).

The DOH, though, noted that the figure is lower by 5.25 percent compared to the same time period last year...

DOH CONTINUES TO MONITOR RAINY SEASON DISEASES Press Release /24 September 2013

“Our monitoring of dengue and leptospirosis cases continues even after the rainy season,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona said.

As the rainy season draws to a close in the next few weeks, the trend of increasing cases of dengue and leptospirosis appears to have been deterred with effective interventions initiated by the DOH.

A total of 117,658 dengue cases were reported from January 1 to September 7, 2013. This is 5.25% lower compared to the same time period last year. Most of the cases came from Regions VI (14.28%), Region IVA (13.98%), Region VII (9.38%), Region XII (7.98%) and Region III (7.82%). Metro Manila benefited most from the interventions initiated by the DOH as it reduced the number of dengue cases from 23,957 cases in 2012 to 7,909 cases in 2013. This represents a drop of 67% compared to last year. A similar trend was observed in the number of deaths from dengue which was reduced from 107 cases last year to 11 cases today.(????-Ro)

In a similar fashion, leptospirosis cases were 72.13% lower compared to last year. There were a total of 5,658 cases last year compared to 1,577 leptospirosis cases in this current year. The regions affected came from the NCR (27.65%), Region III (14.39%), Region VI (13.82%), Region IV-A (9.07%) and Region XI (8.56%). Despite the relative concentration of cases in Metro Manila, the numberof cases decreased from 2,150 cases last year compared to 436 cases this current which represents an 80% decrease.

Current interventions such as the aggressive campaigns to prevent dengue such as cleaning possible mosquito areas as well as self protection measures were all contributory to the decrease in dengue cases.

Other interventions, such as the ovitraps which was highlighted in the SONA of President Aquino, appear to be an effective method in curtailing the rise of dengue cases. In a similar manner, preventive measures by giving Doxycycline as prophylaxis against leptospirosiswas initiated by DOH in coordination with the local government units (LGUs). Doxycycline was released by the National Center Pharmaceutical Access Management – DOH especially to high-risk groups.

Also, leptospirosis cases were decreased significantly due to the less flooding in flood prone areas through the efforts of the DPWH in improving the drainage systems.

“Vigilance against vectors of dengue and leptospirosis should be a year-round commitment of every Filipino household”, the health chief emphasized.

They've been saying all year that Dengue cases are down from 2012, but I want to reiterate that they are comparing this year's raw figures to last year's revised figures.

Looking at last year's unrevised figures, 95,142 cases had been reported to Sep 12th http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/metro-manila/09/12/12/over-95000-dengue-cases-so-far-2012? . Those figures included up to the end of August, so a week different, but 22,000 more cases this year. Yes, last year's figures were revised upward, but probably so too will this year's.

I'm not sure what they are talking about with regard to the fatal cases (see red above). 263 deaths were reported from 62,156 cases to July 13th (0.42%). One would expect the number of fatalities from 117,658 cases to number up around 497. Last year at this time, the number of deaths was around 549. - Ro

Edit - Oh I see, they are only releasing fatality figures for Metro Manila.

On his Twitter account, [National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Enrique] Tayag said that as of Sept. 28, they recorded 1,964 leptospirosis cases with 305 deaths.

But he noted the number of cases was 68 percent lower compared to the same period in 2012. Metro Manila had the most number of cases among regions, he added.

As for dengue, Tayag said that as of Sept. 21, there were 131,808 dengue cases recorded, with 470 deaths nationwide.
