-->MOUNT Bulusan remained on Alert Level 1 status yesterday which means no hazardous eruption is imminent but President Aquino nevertheless urged Sorsogon residents to be on the alert, cooperate with government authorities, and follow advisories.

Aquino assured the public that contingency measures are in place and the local and national government are prepared for any eventuality.

He added that the Office of the Civil Defense Regional Center V in Albay is coordinating with the provincial disaster risk reduction and management council (PDRRMC) in Sorsogon to ensure preparations are in place in case the alert level is raised further.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level status of Bulusan to Alert Level 1 on Saturday after it showed signs of increased volcanic activity. Phivolcs said a light grayish steam and ash column that reached approximately 600 meters above the crater rim was seen at 8:11 a.m. on Saturday.

Ash fall also affected areas six to 10 kilometers northwest of the crater.

Traces of ash were reported in Barangays Rangas, Anyog, Cogon and the town proper of Juban and Casiguran and Barangay San Antonio.
At least 10 volcanic earthquakes and four explosion-type events were recorded after the ash and steam emission.

MANILA, Phillippines (Xinhua) - The Bulusan Volcano in north Philippines' Sorsogon province had another ash explosion from its summit crater at 6:45 a.m. local time, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) said.

In a bulletin issued Monday Morning, the Phivolcs said the steam-driven explosion lasted for around five minutes and produced a brownish to light grayish ash cloud, which rose to about 700 meters above the summit.

The volcano at Mt. Bulusan began spewing ash and steam on Saturday morning.

The seismic network around Bulusan Volcano recorded 28 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.

MANILA, Philippines ? The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned residents near Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon on the impending threat of rain-triggered avalanche of steaming lahar that may cascade down surrounding communities as mudflows has already shut down Daang Maharlika Highway in Bicol.

?People residing near valleys and streams are advised to be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows in the event of heavy and continuous rainfall,? it said.

With Daang Maharlika Highway now rendered impassable, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) advised motorists to take alternate routes.

In a traffic advisory, travelers going to and from Manila to Matnog are told to take the East Coast Road from Abuyog to Gubat Barcelona Road, Bulusan to Irosin, and Irosin to Matnog Roads.

Those plying the route from Bulan, Sorsogon have to take the West Coast Road from Bulusan to Magallanes Road, Magallanes to Juban, and Juban Sorsogon Roads.

In case of massive ash fall, DPWH said the Buklusan to Barcelona Gubat and Gubat to Abuyog Roads will be opened to traffic in the event that the Irosin Section becomes impassable.

Bernie de Leon of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said isolated rain showers and thunderstorms are expected in Bicol Region, causing rains that may last from 30 minutes to about an hour and may trigger lahar avalanche.

Flight warning as residents flee Philippine volcano

MANILA, Nov 10, 2010 (AFP) - Scores of people fled their homes near a restive Philippine volcano Wednesday, while authorities advised pilots to avoid flying near clouds of fine ash shooting out from its crater.

Around 170 people fled several villages at the base of the 1,565-metre (5,135-foot) Mount Bulusan volcano, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said in Manila.

People living near streams and valleys in the area were warned that mudflows of volcanic ash could be triggered by heavy rainfall.

The local government said a quarter million people live in six towns around the volcano, and many of them could be at risk if the mild eruption increases in intensity.

Due to the prevailing wind direction, residents located in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are advised to take precautions against ashfalls. Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano?s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircrafts.

Another ash explosion accompanied by rumbling sounds occurred at 11:47 last night from the summit crater of Bulusan Volcano (12?46.2?N, 124?03?E). The event was reflected by the seismograph as an explosion-type quake lasting for four (4) minutes and 30 seconds. The height of the ash column was not observed due to darkness. Ashfalls were experienced at barangays Bolos, Gulang-gulang, Tinampo and Monbon, Municipality of Irosin. The seismic network detected fifty (50) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Prior to the activity, weak emission of white steam clouds was observed from the crater and the NW vents. Yesterday?s sulfur dioxide measurement yielded an average value of 38 tonnes per day.

Bulusan explodes anew; ash falls on 4 villages in Irosin town

"Yung pagbagsak ng abo ay sa ibang barangay ng Irosin, sa Bolos, Gulang-Gulang, Tinampo at Monbon," Solidum said in an interview on dwIZ radio.

He said the explosion lasted four minutes and 30 seconds, but admitted they could not immediately determine how high the ash column was because it was dark.

Solidum said it was one of the more powerful explosions from Bulusan since it ejected ash last November 9.

Phivolcs had raised the alert level at Bulusan to "1" after it first erupted and spewed ash last November 6.

A separate report on dzBB radio early Tuesday said residents around the volcano heard a sound like thunder and felt the ground shake before ash fell.

Residents in the affected villages left their homes and gathered at a pickup point where they would be brought to evacuation centers.

Solidum, however, said that while a major eruption is possible, there is no sign of it at this time.

"We have not seen magma come up so we have yet to see signs of a major or dangerous eruption," he said in Filipino.

He also said there is no basis to expand the four-kilometer permanent danger zone, at least for now.

Over 500 families evacuate as Bulusan spews ash anew

MANILA, Philippines ? More than 500 families living near Mount Bulusan in Irosin, Sorsogon, fled their homes after the restive volcano exploded anew, spewing ash as high as two kilometers from the summit early Sunday morning, said a civil defense official.

OCD Region 5 Director Raffy Alejandro said they have received initial reports that some 500 families from two barangays in Irosin town and 600 families from Juban town evacuated when Mt. Bulusan exploded anew, sending ash and steam as high as 2,000 meters from the summit around 7:32 a.m. Sunday.

The seismic network around Bulusan Volcano (12?46.2?N, 124?03?E) detected nine (9) volcanic quakes during the 24-hour observation period. The steaming observation was hampered by clouds covering the volcano?s summit the whole day yesterday. No reading of sulphur dioxide emission was obtained due to rainy weather.

The alert status of Bulusan Volcano remains at Alert Level 1.

The public is strongly advised not to enter the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) because the area is at risk to sudden steam and ash explosions. Because of the prevailing wind direction, people residing in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano are reminded to take precautions against ashfalls. Civil aviation authorities must also warn pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano?s summit as ejected ash and volcanic fragments from sudden explosions may pose hazards to aircrafts. Furthermore, residents near valleys and river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and continuous rainfall. DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano?s activity and any new significant development will be immediately relayed to all concerned.

The Philippines is home to almost two dozen active volcanos​


MANILA, 30 November 2010 (IRIN) - With 23 active volcanoes across the Philippines, many communities in this archipelago nation are preparing for the next big eruption.

"Areas where there are frequent explosions are naturally more prepared than others," Renato Solidum, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), told IRIN. "Local officials appreciate the importance of being ready."

Recent high-profile disasters around the world have resulted in a bigger appetite for risk reduction, Solidum said, with people asking for more preparedness training.

"They want to know what has to be done. They want to be aware of the appropriate tools to avoid disaster," he said.

Bulusan action plan

For the past four years, the Bulusan volcano has been sporadically spewing ash. Since its first explosion on 26 October this year, the volume of ash has already reached an estimated 466,000 cubic metres, state scientists report.

And with recent explosions sending thick columns of ash up to 2km high, covering roofs, damaging crops and resulting in respiratory problems for local residents, communities are already gearing up.
