'Anthrax' downs 10 farmers in Abra?

"Abra provincial health experts are now investigating why 10 farmers in Langilang town here were taken ill.

Suspecting anthrax as the culprit, government physicians with the help of the Abra provincial veterinary office are examining the farmers, who exhibited skin lesions, said Serafin Alzate from the Office of Gov. Eustaquio Bersamin.

Experts suspected that the farmers ate anthrax-infested carabao meat.

...Blood samples were taken from the farmers and were brought for verification and detection. Results are out in a week...".

"The Department of Health-Cordillera advises the public to remain vigilant and cautious after 23 suspected anthrax cases were reported in three barangays of Lagangilang, Abra after eating meat of a double dead carabao.

Reports from Abra health officials revealed that from January 17 to January 24 suspected anthrax cases increased from 12 to 23 cases, respectively. These cases are in the barangays of Cayapa, Bacooc, and Paganao in Lagangilang, Abra.

Reports gathered by the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) revealed that majority of these cases were males including three children with age range of 2 years old to 57 years old. Two were admitted in Abra Provincial hospital but were discharged after four days...".

MANILA, Philippines?The Department of Health has dispatched a team to investigate suspected anthrax cases in Abra.

The DOH said several suspected cases of cutaneous anthrax were reported in Lagangilang, Abra, during the last week of December 2012.

To date, 23 cases have been detected, all males and with age ranging from 2 to 52 years old.

?A DOH team is now assisting local officials in coordination with the Bureau of Animal Industry in the conduct of an outbreak investigation,? the agency said.
