DOH reports 49 pertussis deaths, assures continuous monitoring

MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) continues to monitor cases of pertussis or whooping cough in the Philippines, as it logged a total of 49 deaths since the beginning of this year.

As of March 23, the DOH has recorded at least 862 cases, most of whom are from Mimaropa (187), Metro Manila (158), Central Luzon (132), Central Visayas (121), and Western Visayas (72).

Of the total pertussis cases, 79 percent were under 5 years old.

At least 66 percent of these young children were either unvaccinated or did not know their vaccination history.​..

Infectious Pertussis disease rising in the Philippines with 54 deaths

MANILA: The Philippines' Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday said the contagious bacterial disease called pertussis continues to spread in the country, noting that 54 children have died from the respiratory disease, reported Xinhua.

From Jan 1 to March 30, the DOH tallied 1,112 cases, or “almost 34 times that of the same period last year”, with 54 deaths.

“All 54 deaths are less than five years old,“ DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo told reporters.

In the past six weeks, Domingo said the DOH noted “a continuous increase in the number of pertussis cases” in five regions in the main Luzon island, the central and the southern Philippines.

“Of the total pertussis cases thus far recorded, 77 per cent were less than five years old. Adults, aged 20 and older, account for only around four per cent of the cases,“ he added.​..

Pertussis cases still rising in Philippines– DOH

MANILA, Philippines — Pertussis cases are still on an upward trend after data showed more than 1,500 infections were recorded as of April 13, the Department of Health said yesterday.

Albert Domingo, spokesman for the DOH, yesterday said the agency is not seeing a downward trend yet and is still waiting to see the effects of the vaccination campaign.

Domingo said as of April 13, there have been 1,566 pertussis cases recorded nationwide. A week earlier, the DOH reported 1,477 infections.

Domingo said the agency is waiting for the arrival of three million vaccines...
