Measles also on the rise in Central Visayas

CEBU CITY, Philippines—The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) has urged parents and adult guardians to ensure their children has completed their inoculation schedules, particularly against measles.

This after the regional health office observed an increase in the number of the deadly infection during the first half of this year.

Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal, head of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU-7), said they noted a 163 percent rise in the number of measles in Central Visayas.

“We are seeing an increasing number of measles this year, and recorded a 163 percent rise in cases compared to last year,” said Cañal.

From January to May in 2022, DOH-7 recorded 62 cases of measles, higher than the 38 they posted for the same period in 2021...

Measles cases up from 2021

AT least 212 measles cases have been reported by the Department of Health from January 1 to June 11 this year, nearly double compared to the same period last year.

According to the agency’s latest Measles Surveillance Report, the number is 89 percent higher than the 112 cases reported in the first six months last year.

Davao Region has the highest number of measles cases with 38, followed by 24 in Calabarzon...

A total of 450 measles and rubella cases were recorded from January 1 to September 17, 2022, which was 153% higher than those recorded during the same period last year, the Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday.

Based on the DOH’s national measles and rubella data as of September 17, there were only 178 cases logged from January 1 to September 17, 2021.

Cumulatively, most of the measles and rubella cases this year or 16% were reported in Calabarzon at 70.

It was followed by Central Visayas with 61 cases (14%), and the National Capital Region (NCR) with 47 cases (10%).

From August 21 to September 17, 2022 alone, 68 measles and rubella cases were reported, most of which from Calabarzon with 16 cases or 24%.

This was followed by Eastern Visayas with 12 cases (18%), and Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and NCR with seven cases each (10%).

The DOH said Calabarzon, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, and Soccsksargen showed measles and rubella case increases in the recent four morbidity weeks or on August 21 to September 17.

During the same period, Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Central Visayas, and NCR, meanwhile, surpassed the measles epidemic threshold levels.

The measles clusters were specifically logged in Barangay Caranglaan, Dagupan City, Pangasinan, and Barangay Balangasan, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

Thirty-six cases were classified as laboratory confirmed measles, while 37 cases were tagged as laboratory confirmed rubella, according to DOH.

Two individuals also reportedly died in August and September due to measles and rubella. This posed a 0.4% case fatality rate...

Suspected ‘measles and rubella’ cases in Northern Mindanao increase — DOH 10

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY —- The number of suspected ‘measles and rubella’ cases reported in the Northern Mindanao region this year has increased by 82 percent according to the Department of Health Region 10 (DOH-10).

Dr. Emma Imperio, DOH-10 National Immunization Program medical coordinator, in an interview said the region has already tallied 122 suspected measles and rubella cases from January 1 to October 16, 2022.

This is 55 cases higher compared to the reported cases in the same period last year.

The province of Bukidnon has the highest number with 50 suspected cases, followed by Cagayan de Oro City with 21 cases, Misamis Oriental with 20 cases, Lanao del Norte with 16 cases, Misamis Occidental 13 cases; Iligan City two cases and Camiguin with zero case.

Imperio said the increase is probably because the government has been prioritizing the vaccination against Covid-19...

Measles cases in Philippines up by over 200%

MEASLES cases continue to grow compared to last year, based on the latest data of the Department of Health (DOH).

In its latest Measles Surveillance Report, the DOH said there are already 467 measles cases reported from January 1 to October 8, 2022.

This is 203 percent higher compared to the 154 measles cases reported during the same period in 2021...

Cebu City health office detects 1 rubella case, 1 death

THE Cebu City Health Department (CHD) detected this year one confirmed case of rubella virus or German measles and recorded one death suspected to be caused by measles.

CHD head Dr. Daisy Villa said Monday, November 7, 2022, that the person who tested positive is an adult male but has already recovered.

The mortality was a seven-month-old baby from Barangay Labangon who got admitted to one of the hospitals in the city on October 21 but later on succumbed to death.

The infant was suspected to have measles since he manifested symptoms like fever and rashes before his death, said Villa.

She added that the deceased was not able to receive an anti-measles vaccine since it can only be given to children nine months old and beyond...

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) yesterday reported an increase in the number of measles cases nationwide by almost 200 percent.

In its latest measles surveillance report, the DOH said 462 cases of the highly infectious disease were recorded from January to Oct. 15 compared to 159 during the same period last year.

One measles-related fatality was recorded compared to zero death in 2021.
