THE Davao City Health Office (CHO) has recorded 16 confirmed cases of measles and 222 suspected cases in 36 barangays in the city.

"We have 222 suspected cases. They have fever, maculopapular rashes, cough, cold, eye redness (conjunctivitis), and other viral symptoms," said Assistant City Health Officer Dr. Marjorie Culas through a text message to Sun.Star Davao yesterday.

The 16 cases were confirmed after the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Manila processed their laboratory exams. The CHO has also informed that only districts of Paquibato and Baguio have not reported any cases of measles...

DAVAO CITY ? Suspected measles in Davao City has already claimed 11 lives as of January, the City Health Office (CHO) reported.

Based on November 7 to January 23 report of the Department of Health (DoH) 1I Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, CHO chief Dr. Josephine Villafuerte said the diagnosis of those who died was suspected measles.

But she said the blood samples of the 11 cases were already sent to Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Metro Manila for validation and confirmation.

The City Health Office recorded a total of 101 suspected cases of measles from January 1-27 representing a 1,343% increase as compared to the number of cases registered during the same period last year.

The number is way more than the outbreak threshold level and requires immediate and precise response to bring down if not eliminate the number of measles cases.

As this developed, Mayor Beng Climaco Thursday night met with Department of Health-9 Director Emilia Monicimpo, Asst. Director Joshua Brillantes and CHO personnel headed by OIC Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite to discuss the outbreak of measles cases in the city and the immediate solutions to stop the spread of the contagious disease.

The mayor is set to issue an executive order declaring dengue outbreak in the city...

The Department of Health on Saturday reported a measles outbreak in Zamboanga City, prompting the agency and the local government to launch a massive immunization program in villages.

The mass immunization, which began on February 19, will run until March 23. Health workers visit houses in all 98 villages in an effort to vaccinate children aged 6 months to 5 years.

Nearly 122,000 children are expected to benefit from the vaccination.

The City Health Office under Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite declared a measles outbreak after it recorded 100 measles cases since January this year, which was 1,300 percent higher compared to the cases in the same period last year...

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Two children had died of measles in Zamboanga City where health officials recently declared an outbreak with 200 cases reported since January in the wake of their parents? refusal to have their children inoculated.

The victims ? one aged two years and the other three-months-old? were from Barangay Tumaga.

Measles cases nearly triple in January: DOH

MANILA ?The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a rise in number of measles cases nationwide from January 1 to February 3 of this year as it noted that there were a total of 877 suspected measles cases recorded.

?This is almost triple times the number of cases reported during the same period last year which totaled to 293 cases,? the DOH Measles Disease Surveillance Report bared.

Based on the report, there were 12 deaths recorded from Region 11 (Davao Region), Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and Region 12 (Soccsksargen).

Top reasons for non-vaccination of measles were mother was busy (25 percent); not eligible for vaccination (24 percent); and child was sick (15 percent), the report said.

Other reasons include forgetting the schedule; fear of side effects; against beliefs; no vaccine available; far from health center; transferred residence; parents refuse; history of travel; some were in war conflict areas; lack of knowledge, vaccinator not available; and medical contraindication...

Cebu City ? The Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas has declared an outbreak measles in Negros Oriental after confirming that 21 adults, mostly construction workers, were positive of the disease.

?We only need one case to cause an outbreak,? said DOH Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas in a press conference Tuesday.

The DOH is monitoring seven towns and one city in Negros Oriental and has launched a measles immunization drive, Bernadas said.

Most of the cases are in Dumaguete City, she said. Other towns affected are Bacong, Mabinay, Sta. Catalina, San Jose, Siaton and Valencia...

Central Luzon reports 41% spike in measles cases

The number of measles cases in Central Luzon increased by 41 percent in the first three months of the year, compared to the same period in 2017..

Data from the Department of Health?s (DOH) Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) showed 106 cases of measles from Jan. 1 to March 24 this year compared to 75 in the similar period last year.

Of the seven provinces in Central Luzon, Pampanga has the highest number of measles cases with 56, followed by Tarlac with 18; Bulacan, 11; Bataan, 10; Zambales, 5; Aurora, 4; and Nueva Ecija, 2.

Dr. Jess Fantone, head of the DOH RESU, said a measles outbreak had already been declared in Pampanga and Tarlac...

OUT of 143 reported measles cases in Central Visayas, only 37 are laboratory-confirmed, an official of the Department of Health (DOH) 7 said yesterday.

To anticipate the possibility that more measles cases will crop up, health officials are meeting with local government units in Cebu and other areas in the region for the implementation of the catch-up vaccination program for those not yet affected by the virus.

Dr. Shelbay Blanco, chief of DOH 7?s Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU), told reporters yesterday that of the 37 laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Region 7, 33 are from Negros Oriental, and two each are from Cebu and Siquijor.

Blanco said 106 of the 143 cases are still being subjected to laboratory confirmation...

PALO, Leyte -- The death of four children in Samar provinces due to measles is very alarming as it came after decades of carrying out immunization program, said an official of the Department of Health (DOH) regional office here on Friday.

The highly contagious disease has killed three children in the remote town of Silvino Lobos in Northern Samar and a child in Catbalogan City, the capital of Samar province this year.

The latest victim is a 10-month-old girl in Silvino Lobos town as her parents failed to bring the child to the health center for immunization.

?Our health workers visited the house of the family several times, but no one is at home. The father was busy with carpentry works and the mother went somewhere,? said Elaine Joy Villarosa, Department of Health national immunization program manager for Eastern Visayas (Region 8).

The DOH recorded 76 cases of measles from January to third week of August this year in six provinces of the Region 8. In the entire 2017, at least 80 children suffered the disease, but no fatality.

?Measles immunization starts at nine months. Some of the victims are younger than nine months or what we call the window period. These children got the disease from older children whose parents missed the scheduled immunization activity,? Villarosa explained.

Measles immunization provided by the government for free saves children's lives as it prevents children from getting seriously ill.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It remains one of the top caused of death among young children globally, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, according to the World Health Organization.

Measles is transmitted via droplets from the nose, mouth or throat of infected persons. Initial symptoms, which usually appear 10?12 days after infection, include high fever, a runny nose, bloodshot eyes, and tiny white spots on the inside of the mouth.

Several days later, rashes will develop, starting on the face and upper neck and gradually spreading downwards.

The DOH has reiterated its call to support the government?s immunization program this year that will benefit 213,717 children in the region.

The health department has been conducting its regular mass vaccination to combat polio, measles, tetanus, meningitis, diphtheria, and tuberculosis.

The immunization program targets 129,370 children 0 to 12 years old and 84,347 Grades 1 to 7 school children in the region.

The DOH pushed for vaccination noting that in the past two years, there are still confirmed cases of fatal diseases preventable by vaccines. (PNA)

THE Department of Health (DOH)-Western Visayas declared measles outbreak inside the compound of Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City.

As of November 12, about 25 inmates have been suffering from fever and rashes inside the BJMP-Handumanan, Dr. Grace Tan, head of CHO-Environment Sanitation Division, said Tuesday, November 13.

Of the 25 inmates, 19 inmates have been placed in the isolation area.

If there?s an increase of fever and rashes, Tan said they leveled it as suspected measles unless it will be confirmed with the laboratory test.

However, she said the Department of Health (DOH)-Western Visayas called it an outbreak...

MALAPATAN, Sarangani - Local officials have reported several deaths due to measles in 6 remote sitios of a village in this town.

The cases of measles have been reported in Sitios Datal Nai, Alna, Lower Kyogam, Upper Kyogam, Mahayag, and Lino -- all in Barangay Upper Suyan.

Boyet Ogan, Upper Suyan's barangay chairman, said that around 100 people were affected by measles, with 21 identified fatalities. Ogan added that they started to monitor the disease in the village last November 5.

Municipal health officer Diomedes Remitar said they have monitored 17 deaths in 23 different hospitals in the town but they have yet to verify if these were due to measles...

Measles kills 21 children in Mindanao

MANILA: At least 21 children, including infants, died in an outbreak of measles that afflicted residents of three remote ?barangay? (villages) on the island province of Sarangani in restive Mindanao, according to local and health officials.

Dr Diomedes Remitar, the municipal health officer of the town of Malapatan in Sarangani, said that so far, the total death toll was reported since the ailment struck at the villages in the first three weeks of November.

At least 23 of the patients have already been hospitalised but many more especially children and infants could not be reached by volunteer health workers because most of the affected areas could be reached only by 20 hours of trekking, Remitar said...
