DOH Davao reports alarming increase in measles cases

DAVAO CITY -- Recorded cases of suspected measles, a contagious viral disease, went up to an alarming 2,003 from January to July this year from only 129 last year in Region 11 (Davao), said the regional health office.

So far, 167 have been confirmed positive with one death due to measles and eight deaths are considered clinically compatible to measles, said Divine C. Hilario, Department of Health (DoH) Region 11 information officer and officer-in-charge of the DoH-Human Advocacy Promotion...

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/30 August) ? Seven children have died of measles in the city as of Aug. 8 and there has been a spike in confirmed cases of the disease, a health official said Thursday.

Armi Capili, head for immunization of the City Health Office attributed the rise in measles cases to the failure of many mothers to have their children immunized.

She said in Thursday?s iSpeak media forum at City Hall that the office has so far received 1,228 reports of suspected measles cases as of Wednesday but only 120 have been confirmed.

According to Department of Health regional unit head for health education and promotion Divene Hilario, the total regional prevalence of the disease in 2013 was only 129.

Capili said the spike could be attributed to the highly contagious nature of the disease one case of which can contaminate up to 20 people.

In 2012, there were only four confirmed cases in Davao City, which Capili attributed to an intensified immunization campaign in 2011. In 2013, the number rose to 50...

Measles reaches epidemic margin in Northern Mindanao

HAVING the highest reported number of measles cases in northern Mindanao, Cagayan de Oro has joined national efforts to prevent outbreak of the virus-caused communicable diseases like measles, rubella, and polio that are easily spread among children.

The Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (Resdru) of the Department of Health in the region (DOH-10) reported a total of 595 cases of suspected measles in the city as of August 29, 2014.

In the DOH-10's latest measles surveillance report, the figure shows 36 percent of all cases in the region is registered in Cagayan de Oro.

Epidemic threshold

With this figure, northern Mindanao has reached the epidemic threshold recording 1,657 cases which is 2,616 percent higher compared to the same period last year...

Cebu City ? Measles cases in Central Visayas from January to September 13 of this year reached 1,387 with 7 deaths, or 1,260 percent higher from the same period last year, the Department of Health in Region VII (DOH-7) said yesterday.

Last year, only 102 measles cases were recorded for the entire Central Visayas region with no fatality, records released by the DOH?s Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) 7 showed.

RESU-7 medical chief Dr. Dino Caing said the rise in the number of measles cases in the region can be attributed to the different calamities that struck Cebu, Bohol and Leyte late last year...

DOH reports 95% increases of measles cases in region

The increasing number of measles cases in the country is among the reasons mass immunization is conducted by the Department of Health nationwide.

During a recent forum, DOH Assistant Regional Director Amelita Pangilinan said there are 117 confirmed cases of measles from January to October this year compared to 60 cases for the same period last year with a reported death from Baguio City. This represents a 95 percent increase of measles cases in the region this year.

Benguet recorded the highest number of cases with 59, followed by Baguio with 34, Kalinga with 14, Ifugao with four, Abra with three, Mountain Province with two and Apayao with one confirmed case...

THE measles outbreak in Barangay Trangka, Maasin, Iloilo has stabilized, according to the latest report of the Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (Pesu) of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office.

All of the patients who suffered from measles have been treated accordingly following the surge of cases on the 41st morbidity week (October 5-11) in the village. There has been no fatality.

There have been 30 reported cases of measles in the village since January this year. Most of patients were male (80 percent or 24 cases) belonging to 15 years old age group (47 percent or 14 cases).

The cases had their peak on the 41st morbidity week wherein 13 cases were reported. A week thereafter, five cases were added in the list and seven emerged from October 19-25.

Ninety percent or 27 cases were treated at Ramon Tabiana Memorial District Hospital in Cabatuan and the remaining three cases were managed at home...

The number of fatalities due to measles infection in the Philippines has topped 100 during the first 10 months of 2014, according to the WHO Western Pacific Region Measles-Rubella Bulletin fro Oct. 2014.

From January 1 through October 20, 2014, the Philippines had reported 102 measles deaths, so high the total accounts for 78 percent of all measles deaths in the region this year (131).

To date, 53,810 suspected cases of measles, including 17,893 confirmed cases have been reported on the archipelago. This is up from 48,777 suspected and confirmed cases one month prior.

Health agency reports hike in measles, malaria cases in CAR

Measles and malaria cases in the Cordillera have increased by 119 percent and 333 percent, respectively this year.

The January to December 2014 disease surveillance report released by the regional office of the Department of Health showed compared to 73 cases with a lone fatality last year, the cases this year increased to 160 also with one fatality.

For malaria, compared to three cases last year, it increased to 13 this year...

BAGUIO CITY -- The Department of Health (DOH) noted a huge increase in measles cases in the Cordillera region in 2014.

In an interview on Friday, DOH OIC Director Amelita Pangilinan, citing the DOH Surveillance Report, said there were 75 cases in 2013 with one death which increased to 182 cases with one death in 2014 or a 143-percent increase.

From the 667 laboratory specimen examined, there are 182 confirmed cases, 92 negative results, and 393 pending cases needing confirmation, Pangilinan said.
