A nurse who sits as Provincial Dengue Program Coordinator and a medical officer based at the Department of Education (DepEd) schools? division office in Bohol confirmed that the new dengue strain, brought by the aedes aegypti mosquitoes, carries symptoms that are not the usual indicators of the disease.

Nurse Polizena Rances and Dr. Aida Calamba of the DepEd here said that dengue then, can be confirmed following symptoms which can be ?read? from their college books: headaches, three days of high fever, vomiting, exhaustion, rashes, swelling in the lymph nodes, intense joint and muscle pains and low platelet count.

Now, dengue fever however, has exhibited quite disturbing symptoms which may lead conflicting medical differential diagnosis, both medical practitioners warned.

"Fever associated with dengue now may not be as high unlike then or platelet count can go erratic that proper medical monitoring is needed," Rances said.

Months ago, health sources revealed that dengue has become more virulent, and the disease comes out during rainy season, when mosquitoes breed in places where water collects after the rain.

At the weekly Kapihan sa PIA on June 28, Rances bared that dengue has hit 273 patients in Bohol from January to the third week of June.

Since then too, ten patients have died marking a case fatality rate of 3.66 percent in Bohol.

According to provincial epidemiology surveillance unit (PESU) Fritzie Olaguir, this is way too high based on the Department of Health standards of one percent of the total cases.

Olaguir also said most fatalities came to hospitals at a rather late admission.

While several patients arrived at the hospitals and health facilities in time, and were properly treated, some of them came too late, proving that tarrying is fatal in dengue cases.

Dr. Calamba, whose agency has spearheaded an anti dengue drive in schools said while prevention of the disease is still a layman?s best defense, seeking immediate medical attention is a crucial step in dengue treatment.

Dr. Calamba, nurses Olaguir, Rances and Angeles Bagnit all pressed that they need communities to join the drive by searching and destroying mosquito breeding places; patients seeking early medical attention; self protection and saying no to indiscriminate fogging. (mbcn/rahc/PIA-Bohol)

Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit chief Jesse Fantone said in a press conference in Pampanga on Monday that Central Luzon placed second with 6,241 cases to National Capital Region with the highest cases in the entire archipelago with around 8,000 cases.

Of the seven provinces, Nueva Ecija had the most number of cases at 1,785; Bulacan, 1,745 cases; Pampanga, 1,167; Bataan, 677; Tarlac, 488; Zambales, 348; and Aurora with 31 cases.

Fantone added that Region 3 had 11 deaths during the period; Nueva Ecija had five deaths; Pampanga, three; and the provinces of Bataan, Bulacan, and Tarlac with one each.

As the number of cases continue to rise, DOH-CHD-3 is urging the public to conduct clean-up drives in their communities and destroy all possible breeding sites of mosquitoes such as old tires and tin cans.

The agency emphasized the importance of cleaning not only homes and schools but also places like churches and markets as well as the streets and public playgrounds as you cannot pinpoint where one gets bitten by a dengue-carrying mosquito.

Dengue is a disease caused by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is active during daytime. Headache, fever, muscle and joint pains, and skin rashes characterize the disease. In extreme cases, gums and nose may bleed. (WLB/CLJD-PIA3)

Dr. Pablo Quedado said there were four deaths of the 155 cases listed in Ilocos Sur from January to June 25 this year. For the same period in 2011, there were two deaths and 248 reported.

NDRRMC Reports Agusan Dengue Outbreak

MANILA, Philippines ? The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported yesterday that two children have died in a dengue outbreak in Esperanza town, Agusan Del Sur.

Citing a report from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) of Caraga, the outbreak occured at Purok 8, 8A, 9, and 10 in Barangay Poblacion, Esperanza town.

At least 29 confirmed dengue cases have been recorded, with the victims ranging from 1 to 19 years old, said the NDRRMC.

Two of the victims have died. They were identified as Cristal Grace Fuertes, 10; and Rosegen Omak, 3.

Ifugao health office records 287 dengue cases

Wednesday 11th of July 2012 LAGAWE, Ifugao, July 11 (PIA) -- The Provincial Health Office here recorded 287 cases of dengue suspects from January 1-June 30 compared to 149 for the same period last year.

Provincial health officer Dr. Mary Jo Dulawan said in "Humangan with PIA" program that these are still considered suspected cases since they showed signs/symptoms of the said disease such as fever and rashes.

She also disclosed that there was no mortality during the said period. The recent victim, a 22-year-old policeman assigned at the Lagawe police station, who died of the same symptoms of dengue, falls in the month of July.

Of the reported cases, Lagawe registered the highest number of cases at 98; followed by Lamut, 51,; and Alfonso Lista, 42. The other municipalities have the following number of cases: Kiangan-22; Aguinaldo-21; Asipulo and Hingyon have 12 each; Hungduan-10; Banaue-five and Mayoyao-four.

She attributed the high number of cases to the congested households, stored water in containers which is the favorite breeding places of dengue-carrying mosquitoes, and the mobility of people. ?This is the capital town so people tend to come here and transact business whether personal or official,? Dulawan said.

She urged the public to clean their surroundings everydy, get rid of tin cans and other materials where rain water is stored especially during rainy season.

Dengue is a viral disease which is common during rainy season and transmitted by a mosquito called Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Dulawan further averred that the PHO conducted the following activities in connection to the eradication of the said disease: advocacy on the simultaneous search and destroy activities of barangays, launching of the Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue in June 15 which advocates search and destroy activities. and early referral to health centers of fever cases for evaluation, treatment and/or management and continuous monitoring of health situation by barangay officials as well as personnel from the local health offices. Dengue Cases In QC Up

The Quezon City Health Department said the number of dengue cases in the city from January to June 30 this year is higher by 35 percent compared to the same period in 2011.

There are 3,406 recorded dengue cases for the first six months this year in Quezon City compared to the 2,513 over the same period of 2011.

Despite the rise in dengue cases, Quezon City health officer Antonietta Inumerable said the number of deaths due to dengue dropped to 15 compared to 19 last year.

8 Koronadal villages considered dengue hotspots

Wednesday 11th of July 2012 KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, July 11 (PIA) -- Eight of the 27 barangays here have been considered dengue hotspots, an official of the City Health Office here said.

City health officer Dr. Jean Genevieve Aturdido identified these barangays as General Paulino Santos (GPS), Zones 2, 3, and 4, Sta. Cruz, Sto. Nino, Morales and Carpenter Hill, where they have concentrated intensified anti-dengue campaigns.

?These barangays are now actively involved in regular cleanup of possible mosquito breeding places as well as in house-to-house campaign to remind villagers of the dangers of dengue as well as means to prevent its spread,? she said.

Last week, two children succumbed to the mosquito-borne disease, the city health office reported.

Clustering or presence of three or more cases in four consecutive weeks has been reported in barangay GPS.

Aturdido warned parents to monitor their children?s conditions and to seek medical attention if their children have fever that lasts more than one day.

She added that with almost daily rain, the number of dengue cases could rise further.

?During the last week of June we monitored 69 cases; this week the number could reach 80,? she said, adding that they are closely monitoring dengue admissions in hospitals here.

Report from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of the Department of Health (DOH) 12 said cases in Soccsksargen Region as of July 7 has already reached 1,907, an increase of 24 percent as compared to 1,532 cases in the 27th week last year.

Most dengue cases were reported from North Cotabato with 940, followed by South Cotabato (314), Cotabato City (243), General Santos City (204), Sarangani (114), and Sultan Kudarat (94).

Sharp increases were reported in Cotabato City at 109 percent and North Cotabato at 94 percent.

Same RESU-DOH 12 report indicated that 15 persons have already died from dengue this year: five each in General Santos City and North Cotabato, three in South Cotabato , and two in Sarangani.

However, the two deaths in Koronadal City have not yet been included in the DOH 12 report since these were only confirmed over the weekend, thus, increasing the number of deaths in South Cotabato to five and the entire Soccsksargen Region to 17.

South Cotabato Provincial Health Officer Dr. Rogelio Aturdido noted that although the total number of dengue cases in the province this year has remained 16 percent lower than the figures at the same time last year, the number of deaths has more than doubled from two in the 27th week last year to five as of this weekend.

?There seems to be slackening in the public?s compliance with the second reminder of the 4S approach, which is to seek early consultation,? he observed.

DOH?s 4S Kontra Dengue strategy consists of Search and Destroy, Seek early consultation, Self-protective measures and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.

He also reminded the public to re-activate the 4 o?clock habit of cleaning mosquito breeding areas such as gutters, tires, drums, vases, flower pots and other places with stagnant water.

Other measures being implemented include intensification of ?bayanihan? at village level, information campaign especially in schools and distribution of chemically-treated nets.

This week, the South Cotabato Schools Division has started organizing Little Dengue Brigade (LDB) in public elementary schools.

Ifugao cop dies due to dengue

Wednesday 11th of July 2012 LAGAWE, Ifugao, July 11 (PIA) -- A 22-year-old policeman is dengue?s latest victim in the province of Ifugao.

Medical records show that PO1 Nylthon Lubbong has been in and out of the hospital because of dengue. He has had checkups at the Ifugao General Hospital on June 20 and July 3. He allegedly suffered from high fever, cough, headache and had rashes on his body. Lubbong was transferred and confined at the Veterans Memorial Hospital in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya until he died on July 7.

Lubbong was one of the 11 field training program students of Public Safety Basic Recruit Course Class assigned at the Lagawe Police Station since May 24 for a six-month training.

Executive assistant Ignacio Bunnolna warned municipal employees to take precautionary measures against dengue.

Data from the Provincial Health Office said that from January to June of this year, 98 cases have already been reported in the province.

Dengue, said health authorities, is a viral disease which is common during rainy season and transmitted by a mosquito called Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The dengue mosquito is a small, black and white insect with stripes all over its body. It prefers to bite just after sunrise and before sunset.

Aedes aegypti prefers to rest indoors in cool, shady places, dark corners and indoor closets while Aedis albopictus prefers to rest outdoors among shrubs and trees. DOH alarmed over rising dengue cases

MANILA, Philippines - A total of 46,651 people have been sick with dengue this year, and the death toll -- 294 -- is raising concerns among health authorities.

Health Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag told reporters that the total number of cases from January to July this year is 13.8% higher than the 40,975 recorded during the same period in 2011. Death toll last year was 259.

"The DOH is really really concerned now because of the increasing number of deaths," he said.

Dengue cases spike 82% in Northern Mindanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- The number of dengue cases reported in Northern Mindanao in the seven months to early July has significantly risen by 81.6% from the same period last year, data from the regional Department of Health-Center for Health Development (DoH-CHD) showed.

The same data, however, only listed two deaths from the mosquito-borne disease in the region compared with three last year within the same time frame.

ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanews/22 July) ? The City Health Office has launched a ?Zero Dengue, Act Now? initiative aimed to step up awareness of the dengue disease in the wake of a steady number of dengue cases registered in this city.

City Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos said the two-Saturday campaign, launched on July 21, targets the search and destroy approach in the top five barangays with the most number of registered dengue cases: Guiwan, Lunzuran, Putik, Tetuan, Tugbungan and Tumaga, all located east of this city...

...Records at the City Health Office showed that there were 1,912 cases of dengue cases with 22 fatalities registered since January.

More and more Filipinos are infected with the dengue virus, largely disproving President Benigno Aquino?s claim in his State of the Nation Address (Sona) that the Philippines is on its way to managing the deadly mosquito-borne disease.
The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday reported a 16-percent spike in dengue cases in the country this year.
There were already 51,597 cases recorded from Jan. 1 to July 14, according to the DOH National Epidemiology Center?s (NEC) dengue surveillance report.
?This is 16.43 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which was 44,315,? said the NEC.
The number of deaths from the dengue virus also rose to 328, which is higher than the 293 cases recorded during the same period last year.

occurred in Region VII. Affected population involved are from 1 month ? 87 years of age

DOH warns public on rising number of dengue cases

This after sentinel hospitals turned in reports of increasing number of dengue patients admitted weekly.

Latest update from the Regional Epidemiology, Surveillance and Disaster Response Unit (RESDRU) noted some 2,456 cases region wide between January to August 3, 2012.

RESDR Unit Chief, Dr. David Mendoza said this is 116.77 percent higher over the same period last year, which recorded only 1,133 cases.

Recorded deaths on dengue, on the other hand, returned low case fatality rate of .24 percent or six (6) deaths over the same period.

The province of Misamis Oriental continues to absorb the most number of cases or 74.80 percent of the entire regional total.

Mendoza however explained that this is an expected rise in admissions as based on the yearly trending, from 2002 to present. (PIA)

Tabuk City reports upsurge in suspected dengue cases

TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Aug. 17 (PIA) -- City health authorities called on the public to heed anti-dengue advisories following a reported upsurge in suspect-cases, here.

Based on the monitoring report shown by Rhea Barcellano of the City Health Office (CHO), dengue suspect cases in Tabuk shoot-up by 348 in two weeks from July 16-31 from the 336 cases recorded since January-July 15, 2012.

For the period January-July 31, 2012, total dengue suspect cases here reached 684 compared to the 205 cases in the same period in 2011.

The CHO reported that the cases were monitored from 39 out of the 42 barangays of Tabuk, alerting the CHO to declare a dengue alarm in the city...

Center for health reports decrease in dengue cases in Cordillera

Thursday 6th of September 2012 BAGUIO CITY, Sept. 6 (PIA) - - The Department of Health (DOH) Center for Health and Development – Cordillera (CHD-CAR) reported a decrease in dengue cases in the region but warns the public not to be complacent and remain vigilant.

The Center said intermittent rain and occasional sunny or fair weather may hasten the breeding of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

According to CHD-CAR Local health Support Division Chief, Dr. Amelita Pangilinan, for the period January to September 1 this year, a 3,136 suspected dengue cases were recorded, down by 10 percent compared to the 3,473 cases recorded during the same period last year.

Abra, Ifugao, Kalinga, and Mountain Province as well as Baguio City recorded decrease in cases while Apayao and Benguet showed increase in dengue cases - from 26 last year to 151 and from 344 to 626 cases, respectively.

Pangilinan also reported 11 dengue-related deaths – four in Abra, one in Benguet, two in Ifugao, three in Mt. Province, and one non-Cordillera resident who died in the region.

Even with the decrease in dengue cases, Pangilinan advised the public to remain vigilant as dengue cases remain high in some parts of the country.

Moreover, dengue virus can be transferred from one host or infected person to another, and the intermittent rain coupled with an occasional sunny day also increases the breeding probability of dengue virus-carrying mosquitoes.

Pangilinan also reminded the public to continuously clean their homes and surrounding of possible dengue mosquito-breeding sites, which include plants that accumulate water, uncapped tin cans, bottles, water vessels, or even unturned bottle caps.

As for anti-dengue strategies, the DOH is continuously advocating the 4S campaign - Search and Destroy Dengue Breeding Mosquito sites, Self-protection, Seek early consultation, and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.

The DOH is also actively campaigning for the ABKD or "Aksyon Barangay Kontra Dengue," which pushes for a community mobilization in the fight against dengue.

The Department of Science and Technology is also helping in the campaign by developing the Ovicidal-larvicidal (OV) Trap, which, in partnership with the DOH and the Department of Education, have already been rolled-out to high-risk communities and public schools nationwide.

“Combating dengue is a shared responsibility. As the government is continuously doing its best in the prevention, advocacy and in developing new means and ways to fight dengue, public cooperation and community involvement is still a very essential factor in the campaign," Pangilinan said.

Dengue cases in Cagayan on the rise

Thursday 6th of September 2012 TweetFacebookYahooEmailShareThis TUGUEGARAO CITY, Sept 5 (PIA) -- After the regional health department?s report on the decrease of dengue cases in the whole Cagayan Valley region, the province of Cagayan has also released a report of its increasing dengue cases as of August 2012.

Based on the latest report, there were 965 morbidity cases with seven deaths recorded from January to August this year, which is higher than the recorded 581 cases and two deaths last year.

Dr. Carlos Cortina, assistant provincial health officer, said the regional data is decreasing as compared to last year but for the province of Cagayan, health officials are alarmed on the increasing trend, a total reverse of the scenario last year wherein Cagayan had recorded a decreasing trend.

Cortina said they do advocacy campaign to educate public on how to eradicate dengue.

The Provincial Health Office had also procured insecticides and spraygun that are now distributed to identified areas with the most number of cases as means to kill dengue carrying mosquitoes.

?We also educate them on the proper ways of cleaning surroundings, search and destroy, canal and drainage declogging, as well as wearing of long pants and sweatshirts. We also advised them to immediately consult physicians when they experience on and off flu or headache,? Cortina said.

The doctor added that they have distributed insecticide-treated mosquito nets, which are effective in protecting skins from mosquito bites.

He said victims should always consider high index of suspicion to go immediately consult doctors whenever one is experiencing headache or flu for immediate diagnosis. (OTB/PIA-2)

Dengue kills 5, afflicts 808 in Ilocos Sur

Dr. Pablo Quedado, assistant provincial health officer, said, from January 1 to September 4 this year, two school children died of dengue in Narvacan, and one each in Candon City, Sta. Maria, and Cabugao.

Jeffrey Pablico, health educator and promotions officer of the Provincial Health Office, said from January to December 2011, 17 persons died of dengue and 3,545 others were afflicted with the deadly disease.

The Provincial Health Office and the provincial government have intensified its campaign against dengue in all towns including schools and public markets through fogging operations and cleanup drives.

Quedado also directed all barangay health workers including barangay nutrition scholars to help in the information and education campaign as he also urged media to disseminate dengue alert info.

Meanwhile, the provincial government has donated a blood bank for the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) local chapter to save lives during emergencies and calamities, especially to dengue patients at Gabriela Silang General Hospital in the Heritage City of Vigan and other government hospitals in the province.

Vice Governor Deogracias Victor Savellano has urged all local government units, including non-government organizations and other volunteer groups to assist in the campaign against dengue to protect the people especially schoolchildren.

?Let us also assist the PRC in its blood donation campaign to save more lives,? Savellano said.

He also urged the local Red Cross to expand its community programs and services to the poorest of the poor.

Congressman Ryan Singson also led the ?Save a Life Movement? during a blood donation campaign at the Red Cross Headquarters last week reviving the ?Bayanihan? spirit among volunteer groups in the province. (ANL/BPP-PIA 1, Ilocos Sur)

Dengue deaths breach 500 mark

MANILA -- Deaths stemming from the dengue menace have already reached more than 500, health officials said Friday.

Based on the latest Dengue Surveillance Report of the Department of Health (DOH), there were 522 deaths tallied from January 1 to August 25. The figures are higher than the 460 deaths recorded from the same period of last year.

Based on the latest data, there are already 87,649 dengue cases in the same period. This is 12 percent higher compared to the similar period last year, which was at 78,218.

Over 95,000 cases of dengue fever have been recorded so far this year, the Department of Health (DOH) said.
According to the latest data released by the DOH, there have been 95,142 cases of dengue from January to September 2012, or an increase of 13% compared to the same period last year with 84,244 cases.
The total number of deaths as of September is 549, higher than 486 during the same period last year.

Dengue in Davao up 300%

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - A total of 3,096 dengue cases have been recorded here from January to September this year, an increase of more than 300% from last year's data.

In 2011, the local health office documented a total of 896 cases during the same period, according to Melody Pabante, pest control officer of the Davao City's health office.

Pabante added that the highest number of incidents this year was recorded during the month of August: 1,069 cases. A total of 42 dengue victims from the city have died since January.
