LEGAZPI CITY, ALBAY, Philippines ? Chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne disease, struck a village on Batan Island of the town of Rapu-Rapu in Albay, afflicting some 83 villagers, Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said Monday.
Salceda said he has directed Dr. Luis Mendoza, the provincial health officer, to check on the reported sudden rise of the chikungunya fever cases over the last three weeks in Barangay San Ramon, Batan.

MANILA, Philippines?The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 500 cases of what it suspected to be the dengue-like disease called chikingunya.

Speaking at the Kapihan sa Diamond Hotel, Dr. Eric Tayag, DOH spokesperson said Metro Manila, Ilocos region, Southern Luzon, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao and CARAGA have reported cases of symptoms associated with the mosquito-borne disease.

The disease has afflicted 83 people on the island-village in Rapu-Rapu town in Albay alone but Tayag said ?we are still investigating? if the disease that struck the town was indeed chikingunya fever...

Team Sent To Investigate Chikungunya Outbreak

The Department of Health (DOH) sent a team of experts to Albay to study the occurrence of mosquito-borne disease Chikungunya in the province even as outbreaks continue to be reported in several other provinces.

Aside from Albay, the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao and CARAGA have also reported Chikungunya outbreaks, said DoH Undersecretary Eric Tayag said.

The medical team was sent to Rapu-Rapu, Albay where outbreaks have been recorded as early as July...
