Typhoid fever has risen by 60 percent in Negros Occidental this year with three reported deaths, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, provincial health officer, said yesterday.

Tumimbang, who attributed the increase to the long rainy season, said areas of concern are Calatrava, Kabankalan City and San Carlos City that have the most number of cases.

The most number of typhoid fever cases in Calatrava were in barangays Laga-an and Marcelo, Tumimbang added.

There were 486 typhoid cases this year compared to 302 last year, or 60 percent more, he added.

The top three areas with typhoid fever cases, which are areas of concern, are Calatrava with 84, Kabankalan City - 58 and San Carlos City - 43, Tumimbang said.

Other areas hit with typhoid fever are Isabela – 31 cases, Silay City – 27; Escalante City, Himamaylan City, Sagay City and Talisay City with 21 each, Moises Padilla – 20, Cadiz City 17, La Carlota City -15, Victorias City - 12, Don Salvador Benedicto - 11, Toboso -10, Cauayan and La Castellana – 9 each;

MANILA, Philippines - At least 27 villagers have been hospitalized in General Nakar, Quezon, due to typhoid fever.

A report by dzMM radio said that according to local health officials, drinking contaminated water could have been behind the sudden increase in typhoid fever cases in Barangay Anoling.

The health officials said that 27 residents of Barangay Anoling have been rushed to the C.M. Rector hospital in nearby Infanta town and General Nakar Municipal Health Center since June 31.

One person identified as Benny Soliano has also died, but health officials have yet to determine if the victim was suffering from typhoid fever at the time of his death

29 cases of suspected typhoid fever reported anew in Quezon
CALAMBA CITY, July 16 (PIA) ---Twenty nine cases of suspected typhoid fever was reported anew in Quezon province, according to the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD-4A).

OCD 4A reported that the Municipal Health Office (MHO) of General Nakar from June 1 to 06 July 2011, has recorded 29 cases of suspected typhoid fever in Barangay Anoling in which two of were out-patients while 27 were admitted at CM Recto Hospital in Infanta and at Municipal Health Center in Gen. Nakar.


RD Vicente Tomazar of OCD-4A and chairman of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) said based on the report they received, the signs and symptoms observed were fever, chills, headache, lost bowel movement (LBM), abdominal pain and vomiting.


One person identified as Benny Soliano of Anoling, General Nakar died, but DOH-4A and the MHO have yet to determine if the cause of death was indeed typhoid fever.


Meanwhile, the MHO of Pitogo, Quezon from June 4-30, 2011 also recorded 27 cases of patients who were brought to the hospital due to fever, chills, headache, lost bowel movement (LBM), abdominal pain and vomiting. Nineteen of the 27 patients, were from Barangay Bilucao.


Tomazar said, the Department of Health (DOH)-4A conducted bacteriological test of the water sources from the affected barangays. The DOH4A collected blood and rectal swabs of patients confined at CM Recto Hospital and General Nakar Health Center and were sent to the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) for further study. A surveillance team of the DOH was deployed in the affected barangays and has been conducting further analysis of the water sources.


The DOH-CHD and concerned LGUs distributed hyposol in the affected areas while the OCD-RDRRMC coordinated with DOH-4A on the request of Gen. Nakar MHO for the provision of additional ceftriaxone, vial, 1V fluids, anti-pyretics, ORS and chlorine gran, he said.


OCD-RDRRMC-4A is closely coordinating with DOH-CHD 4A, PDRRMC Quezon, MHOs of General Nakar and Pitogo on the situation and result of the test of water sources, Tomazar concluded. (CPG/Norito A. Cabotaje, PIA-Calabarzon)

'Typhoid outbreak' hits Cebu town

CEBU CITY -- Seventeen more patients were admitted to hospitals in southern Cebu after a suspected typhoid outbreak hit Alegria town Tuesday.


This brought to 87 the total number of individuals affected by the typhoid fever; most of them are residents of Barangays Valencia and Compostela in Alegria, said health officials.


The victims have complained of headache, stomach pains, and joint pains, which, according to experts, are symptoms of typhoid fever.


Other symptoms of the disease are fever as high as 39 to 40 degrees Celsius, malaise or weakness, and loss of appetite. Some patients may have flat, rose-colored spots.


Health officials pointed to a contaminated water source as the cause of the "typhoid outbreak."

Typhoid fever in Alegria town, southern Cebu, has killed two persons.

The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) confirmed yesterday the death of a 61-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. Both were residents of Alegria town but died in separate hospitals in Cebu City.

Their identities were still awaiting verification through death certificates from the hospitals, said engineer Noel Esparagoza, DOH-7 hospital maintenance and service division chief...

Typhoid fever deaths in Negros Occidental have reached 16, while leptospirosis fatalities remained at 12 this year, the latest Provincial Health Office surveillance reports released yesterday showed.

There was only one typhoid fever death in Negros Occidental last year.

Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, Provincial Health Officer, said from January 1 to September 10, there were 16 typhoid fever deaths with two in Hinigaran and one each in Kabankalan City, Calatrava, San Carlos City, Isabela, Silay City, Sagay City, Talisay City, Himamaylan City, Cauayan, Cadiz City, Moises Padilla, Murcia, Bago City, E.B. Magalona, and Toboso.

A total of 1,318 typhoid fever cases were admitted to private and public hospitals in the same period, or 849 higher compared to the same period last year, with 717 cases.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines - At least 104 suspected typhoid cases were reported to the Department of Health (DOH) in Leyte as of Saturday.

Most of the cases are from Carigara District Hospital where the patients go for check-up. Some of the patients have already been admitted in the hospital.

The patients came from towns of Capoocan, Carigara, Barugo, and Tunga in Leyte.

As of now, the DOH could not determine the total number of typhoid cases in the province but an outbreak is feared because of the growing number

Typhoid fever hits four Leyte towns but DOH-8 in control
TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, November 8 (PIA) -? The Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas confirmed that typhoid fever has affected four towns in the second district of Leyte and that several measures have been conducted to contain the situation.

DOH Sentinel Nurse Boyd Cerro informed the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) that on Sunday, November 6, he along with Director Edgardo Gonzaga and several DOH-8 staff went to Carigara to verify the reports and to give medicines. DOH has given waterine which must be added to drinking water at 3 drops to 20 liters of water proportion; and chlorine granules also to be added to the water.


Cerro said that specimen taken from the patients showed positive of Salmonella. The initial findings point to water as the cause of the outbreak. All the four towns get their water supply through the Carigara Water District.


The DOH had a meeting with the sanitation engineer of the Carigara Water District and it was learned that the water was tested last October 11 and that the water is chlorinated. DOH advised the water district to have the water tested again.


As of the morning of November 8, the 104 cases mostly children and elderly, initially reported on Sunday has increased to 161 with the addition of 12 patients who are confined at the Divine Word Hospital and 45 who are confined at the Eastern Visayas Medical Center. The number of cases confined at the other three hospitals in the city has yet to be determined, Mr. Cerro said.


Mr. Cerro said that in order to contain the situation, water must be boiled for about 10 minutes before drinking. For those who do not like boiled water, waterine or chlorine may be used but let the water stand for 30 minutes before drinking.


Mr. Cerro added that the people must observe proper food sanitation, cover the food so that contaminated flies may not step on them. He also called for hygienic preparation of food and observance of proper personal hygiene.


Typically, the symptoms of typhoid fever include prolonged high fever, stomach cramps, diarrhea or constipation and general malaise. In extreme cases, the small intestines could be perforated leading to death if left unattended or not treated properly.


Meanwhile, the local government of Carigara has activated its Crisis Management Council and has mobilized its members to attend to reports and complaints of cases from the different barangays. (PIA 8)

TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte, Nov. 17 (PIA) ?- The timely intervention undertaken by the Department of Health (DOH) in Eastern Visayas on the typhoid fever outbreak in four Leyte towns has controlled the spread of the disease.



While water distributed by Carigara Metro Water District is suspected to be the source of typhoid fever, DOH undertook the immediate medical intervention on the victims as well as ditributed water disinfectants to the household in all affected areas to control the spread of the disease. This is even if up to now the result of the laboratory water examination has yet to be released.


Brian Labastida, information officer of DOH-8, said that the situation is now under control as there are no new reported cases as of this week.


Typhoid fever downed 595 victims where 469 sought medical assistance at the Carigara District Hospital (CDH) while the remaining 126 persons were admitted to various hospitals in Tacloban.


While the water facility had disavowed contamination of the water serviced to the towns affected, all sanitary inspectors of said four towns of Carigara, Barugo, Capoocan and Tunga went into a daily campaign urging the public to observe proper personal hygiene and to boil their drinking water regardliess of the source of water.


The disease killed only one victim, a three year old girl from Carigara. (PIA-8)

CEBU City ? A total 2,175 typhoid cases with 13 deaths were reported by the different disease reporting units in Central Visayas from January to November this year, said the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) of Department of Health 7 (DOH-7).

The number of cases increased by 35 percent compared to that of the same period last year.

In the same period last year, there were 761 cases and 16 casualties.

Most people infected by typhoid were older than 21 years, according to the DOH-7 records.

ABOUT four persons died while the number of typhoid fever patients rose to 500 in Tuburan town, northwest Cebu, local health officials said yesterday.
More medical personnel were sent to Tuburan after last week?s typhoid outbreak worsened, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia told reporters.
The governor visited the town last Friday to check on the conditions of the patients.

CEBU CITY -- The number of suspected typhoid fever cases in Tuburan town, northwest Cebu Province has risen to more than 800 patients, said a Department of Health (DOH)-Central Visayas official.

The Province?s count is even higher, with Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) chief Dr. Cristina Giango saying Tuesday there were 999 suspected typhoid cases, including outpatients.

Neighboring towns, the Provincial Government and line agencies are pitching in to contain the outbreak -- from cleaning up the water supply to distributing medicine, relief goods and pledges to pay for hospital bills.

TYPHOID fever claimed another life yesterday, making 26-year-old Rosalie Gracia the fifth casualty of the outbreak in the midwestern town of Tuburan, Cebu.

Dr. Cristina Giango, head of the Integrated Provincial Health Office (Ipho), pointed out that Gracia, a resident of Barangay Kabangkalan, also suffered from renal disease and sepsis.

Gracia died at 11:30 a.m. at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.

Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante, however, said typhoid cases in the town are under control...

Typhoid fever cases reached the 1,000 mark, but health authorities said the rate of is declining as more patients are discharged from Tuburan?s district hospital.

Dr. Expedito Medalla, health and emergency management staff coordinator of the Department of health in Central Visayas (DOH-7), said outpatient admissions went down in the hospital since Wednesday.

?The cases are down trending,? he said.

Since yesterday, they recorded 1,089 suspected cases of typhoid fever in Tuburan.

Five patients have died since the outbreak was declared last week. At least 213 cases alone were recorded in Tuburan District Hospital.

Medalla said they already discharged 102 patients since yesterday.

Results of stool, blood sample and water testing are expected next week...

CEBU CITY -- Even as the Province of Cebu is trying to fight the typhoid menace in the town of Tuburan, another 11 reported cases surfaced in Alegria town.

Seven children were brought to Reinhard Wirtgen Memorial Hospital, while the four were rushed to the nearby Malabuyoc District Hospital last Friday...
