MANILA, Philippines
The Department of Health declared a typhoid fever outbreak in Calamba City, after it detected 752 cases in six villages, an official said on Monday.
Eric Tayag, director of the National Epidemiological Center, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer the number of cases recorded so far in the Laguna city was "unusually high" compared to the one recorded in 2007. He gave no comparative figure for 2007.
"It was unusual and unexpected," he said.
He said typhoid fever cases were reported from 18 villages in Calamba but the DoH was still verifying other cases.
