DoH bans public wakes for bodies carrying infectious diseases

MANILA, Philippines?The Department of Health has modified the rules and regulation on the disposal of the dead, prohibiting open viewing of remains when death has been caused by rabies, Hepatitis B and C, among other infectious diseases.
In an administrative order issued early this month, the DoH strictly directed that remains afflicted by these "dangerous communicable diseases" must be placed in durable cadaver bags or airtight container at the point of death with a biohazard tag attached.
"This container shall not be opened for viewing or any other purpose prior to burial or cremation," stated the amended guidelines issued by the health agency.
The DoH included five new ailments declared as highly contagious diseases: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Hepatitis B and C, rabies, invasive group A streptococcal infections, transmissible spongiform encephalopathies?which includes mad cow disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
Meningococcemia, HIV-AIDS, viral hemorrhagic fevers, yellow fever and plague were previously declared as dangerous annd contagious by the agency...
