BAYUGAN, Agusan del Sur -- Two more persons died due to dengue while the number of ailing victims rose to 82, 30 of them children, municipal health officials here said.

Local health and town officials sought the help of the Provincial Government as they tried to contain other diseases like acute gastroenteritis, broncho pneumonia, amoeba, and diarrhea that hit at least seventeen barangays of this town.


The water and borne diseases were believed to have been caused by incessant rains that hit the province since last week of December 2006, local officials said.

Heavily hit by the dengue fever outbreak were Barangay Poblacion where it claimed four deaths mostly children and one death in Barangay Charito.

The casualties were identified as two-year-old Daisy Mae Manyo, of Barangay Charito, six-month-old Ara Nicole Santiago, seven-month-old Vincent Keith Jaranilla, six-month-old May Agustin Mata, and seven-year-old Allen Jellu Sevilla, all residents of Barangay Poblacion this town.

Those hospitalized were: Katya, 10, the Peteros kids, Kent Joshua, 7, Jirah, 9, Micah, 6, John Llloyd Anangilan, 6, Keana Angela Bicos, 2, Joshua Evangelio, 8, Julius Barry Chua, 4, Princess Nicole Aguilar, 12, Rae Robert Hinunganan, 11, Euro Anthony Sayon, 8 months old, Florida Intig, 12, and Eva Mae Salvero, 4.

Other dengue patients were brought to Butuan City Medical Center and others were brought to as far as Cagayan de Oro City for treatment.

Attending physicians treated other patients at available local hospitals and clinics here since the Municipal Health Center has limited or only two medical officers and four nurses.

Other minors were brought home by their parents but undergoing constant medication.
Bayugan, Agusan del Sur Mayor Magdalena Asis said an emergency meeting with the Municipal Council will be held to decide whether or not to declare the municipality under state of calamity.

About 59 patients were listed to have fallen ill due to water and food borne illnesses and are now undergoing medication.
