Fever downs 59 residents in Tuburan

FIFTY-NINE Tuburan residents, mostly children, have developed fever and rashes, said Tuburan Mayor Democrito Diamante.

Provincial and regional medical officers have been to the town to assess the situation.

Hardest hit by the measles-like symptoms is Barangay Lusong, located 15 kilometers from the town proper, said Diamante.

Most of the victims are between five years old and 10 years old, Regional Epidemiological Service Unit (Resu) chief Renan Cimafranca said.

Cimafranca and Integrated Provincial Health Officer (IPHO) personnel went to the town last Thursday to check and monitor the patients? condition.

Diamante identified the illness as measles, but Cimafranca said they still have to wait for laboratory results...

THE Dept. of Health is intensifying measles immunization in Tuburan town, northwest Cebu after 59 cases were reported...

...Of the 59 reported cases, only 25 were actually checked by health officials as others were already healed when they visited earlier this week, he said.

Most patients were adults, with only 40 percent aged five to 15 years old.

Health authorities suspect a German measles outbreak among Tuburan residents.

As noted in the site visit, patients experienced symptoms of German measles ? low-grade fever, rashes that start from the face and chest, swelling of eyelids or conjunctivitis, cough and colds...

DOH outbreak response set
as measles in Neg. Occ. rise

The Department of Health yesterday announced that it is conducting outbreak response immunization in the barangays of nine towns and seven cities in Negros Occidental, including Bacolod City, that have been hit by an upsurge of measles cases.

Dr. Renilyn Reyes, medical coordinator of the DOH Regional Expanded Program on Immunization, said measles cases in Western Visayas from January to June this year have reached 182 cases compared to 110 cases last year, or 65 percent higher.

Of the 182 measles cases in Western Visayas, Negros Occidental accounted for 122 cases or 67 percent and Bacolod City for 39 cases or 21 percent.

Other areas in WV with measles cases are Capiz with nine, Iloilo ? 8, Aklan 3, and Antique ? 1.

Aside from Bacolod City, areas hit by measles in Negros Occidental are Himamaylan City ? 32, Binalbagan ? 28, Kabankalan City ? 27, La Castellana - 10, Moises Padilla ? 6, Isabela ? 5, Valladolid ? 3, Cauayan ? 2 Pontevedra ? 2, and one each in Bago City, Candoni, Ilog, Sagay City, San Enrique, Talisay City and Victorias City, Reyes said...

?Measles cases still alarming?

Measles and leptospirosis cases in Negros Occidental continue to remain higher this year compared to 2011, while dengue fever and typhoid cases have dropped, Provincial Health Office reports released yesterday, showed.

Measles cases in Negros Occidental from December 17, 2011 to June 28 this year were 244 compared to 11 last year, which is alarming, Dr. Ernell Tumimbang, provincial health officer, said.

Negros Occidental has the most number of measles cases in Western Visayas, he said...
