PhilHealth covers avian flu and flu pandemic

THE Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) has expanded the benefit for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome by including "bird flu" and influenza pandemic in its coverage.
PhilHealth Board Resolution No. 880, expands PhilHealth's benefit to cover Avian Influenza A virus H5N1 or new subtypes of avian influenza A virus that have never circulated among humans and new subtypes of avian influenza A virus that have not circulated among humans for a long time.
PhilHealth members and dependents admitted to hospitals designated as Avian Flu and Influenza Pandemic hospitals by the Department of Health can now avail of hospitalizations benefits of P50,000 per case.
Hospitalization benefits for health care workers in Department of Health-designated Avian Flu and Influenza Pandemic hospitals is P100,000 per case, provided the health care worker contracted the disease while caring for an avian flu or flu pandemic patient.
The current eligibility rules apply to avail of the benefit.
Excluded from this benefit package are influenza-like illness and other seasonal outbreaks of influenza caused by flu virus that occur widely among humans.
Such cases are covered by the regular hospitalization benefits of PhilHealth. (Press release)
