Pfizer tells U.S. officials it cannot supply substantial additional vaccine until late June or July

Pfizer has told the Trump administration it cannot provide substantial additional doses of its coronavirus vaccine until late June or July because other countries have rushed to buy up most of its supply, according to multiple individuals familiar with the situation.

That means the U.S. government may not be able to ramp up as rapidly as it had expected from the 100 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine that it purchased earlier this year, raising questions about whether it can keep to its aggressive schedule to vaccinate most Americans by late spring or early summer.

Last summer, Pfizer officials had urged Operation Warp Speed to purchase 200 million doses, or enough of the two-shot regimen for 100 million people, according to people knowledgeable about the issue who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the situation. But the Warp Speed officials declined, opting instead for 100 million doses, they said.

Pfizer is not the only manufacturer and the US government will seize all of the vaccine production in the US no matter who Pfizer has committed to. This is just the way it is. This happened in the H1N1 pandemic. I think it was France who said they would not allow vaccine shipments out of the country until their citizens were served.

Pfizer is a US based pharma and the US government can make them hand over the vaccine. The End.

I remember I had read that they anticipated US might seize the vaccine, so they were
trying to produce it mainly in other countries, e.g. in Europe.
I don't remember what companies, but some companies were trying to produce in USA
but had to look for other sides

however, April or September doesn't seem to be so important. You can easier hold it down
with measures in summer - then the next surge may come in fall.
That's how it was this year (well, South-USA had too few measures ?!) and it is what we see
each season with other respiratory viruses.
It may even turn out that the vaccine protects better in the first 1-6 months
(as the flu-vaccine) so you would delay it and take it in Aug/Sep

Mary - my post was not a comment on your article. It was a warning to other entities that the US will simply seize what they want. All countries will do this.

Meanwhile....apparently the president signed an executive order last night preventing any export of Pfizer vaccine.
