PETERBOROUGH, Ont. ? A hospital in Peterborough stopped admitting patients to one of its units as of Friday because of an "uncommon" outbreak of three different bacteria, including two superbugs.

Peterborough Regional Health Centre is investigating several cases of C.difficile, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE)...

There have been 11 cases of MRSA since Nov. 5. The first of seven C.difficile cases dates back to Oct. 22. There are two cases of VRE.

Death linked to hospital germ outbreak

Eleven people remain in isolation due to a germ outbreak at the hospital and a man who had been infected died, although the outbreak was not the primary cause of death, a hospital official said.

Margaret Jay, Peterborough Regional Health Centre infection control co-ordinator, said visitors are still restricted at the B3 medical unit where a large number of patients had clostridium difficile (C. difficile), methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE).

The man who died had C. difficile, she said...

A second patient has died in connection with the bacteria outbreak in one of the main wards at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, a hospital official says.

The bacteria outbreak was not the primary cause of death of the patient who died last weekend, said Margaret Jay, infection prevention and control and environmental services manager...

All outbreaks over at PRHC

Peterborough Regional Health Centre has declared that a series of outbreaks in the B3 unit medical is now over.

The hospital said there have been no new outbreaks of Clostridium difficile Infection (CDI) since Nov. 23.

The outbreak of CDI was declared in Oct. 22.

On Dec. 13, the hospital declared outbreaks of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) and Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the unit over.

During the outbreaks, 12 patients were diagnosed with MRSA, eight with VRE and there were eight cases of CDI...
