Peru: Report of "new form" of plague

alert

Senior Moderator
It is not clear whether this is a report of a mutation in the plague bacterium, or just a novel presentation in this individual.

My indications seem to be the second interpretation (the first pharyngeal plague case in the area, when previous cases were bubonic), but the ProMED Portuguese moderator seems to think this is the first (an actual mutation in the bacterium).

New variety of plague in La Libertad

Girl of one year and eight months of ill health presents the pharynx. Mutation
exhibits the same symptoms of bubonic plague, but it would be lethal.

The plague is causing alarm in the province of Ascope. The manager
Regional Health, Víctor Peralta, yesterday confirmed the emergence of a new
disease mutation: the pharyngeal plague, which spreads via
mouth of an infected animal has the same symptoms of the disease, but not
lethal.

He said that a girl of one year and eight months of the settlement Tupac
Amaru, in the town of Sintuco (Chocope) has been spread from
disease. The victim was infected by her cat had buboes in
throat.

?? This strain of plague is transmitted from animals to people and
become the second such case so far this year, since
Last May another six year old girl was infected, but in both cases
children are safe? said.

Diaz said he sent samples to the National Institute of Health in
Lima, to verify that this is the same variety. He said that the
had lower fevers and malaise since Friday and Sunday and
had buboes, thus the dose was given against the plague and was given
high.

Comentário:
[Passer Isso não uma seems branda form of plague, possivelmente by third
been acquired by contato com um cat (ocorrência já conhecida), or
Teria become less virulent bacteria.

Problem here that circulação é do bacillus appears to continue? LJS]

This is the ProMED Spanish post of the same article, where the moderator tends to support the second interpretation as well.

recognized exposure include respiratory droplets

transferred to the mouth. Asymptomatic colonization of the pharynx has
been reported in contacts of patients with pneumonic plague. The
symptomatic pharyngeal plague is clinically similar to pharyngitis
