Although Covid-19 has been registering a decrease in infections reported by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), cases of monkey pox or monkeypox continue to rise. The report of the entity's Situation Room recently updated the progress of this disease in Peru.

According to the portfolio led by Minister Jorge López, since the appearance of the first infected patient until the last Saturday, September 3, the infections totaled 1,619.

The report details that in the last 24 hours 29 new infections of the disease have been reported.

Likewise, it was learned that of the total positive cases, more than 60%, 1,034 patients have already received epidemiological discharge after successfully overcoming the disease after receiving specialized treatment.

Likewise, the Minsa also detailed that to date 585 people continue to receive medical treatment and be monitored by health personnel, in addition to the identification of their direct contacts within the framework of the epidemiological fence strategy.

It is necessary to inform that the Ministry of Health warned that 69% of monkeypox cases correspond to men who have sex with men and 10.6% to heterosexuals. Meanwhile, 59.6% of patients have been diagnosed with HIV prior to their infection with monkeypox.

Along the same lines, the infectologist Juan Carlos Celis, president of the Peruvian Society of Infectious and Tropical Diseases of Peru, indicated in Successful that sexual activity is the main cause of contagion of this virus. Other forms have also been identified that have led to the spread of infections.

“The transmission mechanism has always been the same, it has not changed since May 6, when a case was reported outside of Africa, which is intimacy, close, sexual or skin-to-skin. The data should not be partially read, because there are also contaminations in health workers touching the patients' sheets, ”he pointed out.

“It will continue to expand to other groups (…) We are only four months away and it will not stop there. We still do not know all the transmission dynamics, what we know now are the main routes, but in Peru and other parts of the world it will spread, "he added.

It should be added that the average age of monkeypox patients in the country is 32 years....
