Sutep: 400 teachers have lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus and hundreds are infected

The secretary general of the Single Union of Education Workers of Peru (Sutep), Lucio Castro Chipana, reported that so far there are 400 teachers who have died from coronavirus (COVID-19) and that hundreds are infected with this disease.
In the framework of Teacher's Day, which is celebrated this Monday, July 6, Chipana highlighted the work of teachers in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic despite the lack of support from the Government.
"We have a bitter taste on this date because we have 400 dead teachers and hundreds of infected. Many of them continue working despite their difficulties, as there are no medical centers, they have to stay confined at home and they have to continue working, even if they feel bad, because otherwise they declare them abandoned and remove them from office, "he said. to RPP.
He also pointed out that no teacher has received the necessary technological materials to teach remote classes and that the tablets that were to be delivered to students have not been distributed in an integral way.
Regarding the decision of Congress to approve the bill that intends to allocate 6% of GDP to the education sector, Chipana said that it is a beneficial and "fair" proposal for his sector.
"The decision of Congress is in tune with the sentiment of the population, we believe that education should have the treatment it deserves, it has been neglected by the State for years," he said.
Regarding the criticisms made by the Ministry of Economy towards this initiative, Chipana said that the head of this sector, Mar?a Antonieta Alva, "wants the new normal to be neglect of education and health," he added.
