Lima, May 28 (EFE) .- Peru on Thursday exceeded the 4,000 deaths and 140,000 detected cases of the COVID-19 epidemic, which maintains its strong impact in the Andean country, the second most affected by the disease in Latin America.
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that in the last few hours 116 other people died and 5,874 cases were detected, after 23,519 tests had been taken.
With these figures, the total number of deaths in the country rose to 4,099 and the cases detected to 141,779, while the tests reached 928,797 nationwide.
Of the total cases detected, 8,395 have been hospitalized, 128 more than the previous day, while 943 of them remain in intensive care units (ICU) with mechanical ventilation.
ALMOST 60,000 RECOVERED
Despite the high rate of infection, the Ministry added that in the last few hours, 3,363 other people also recovered, reaching 59,442 affected persons who completed their period of home isolation or were discharged from a hospital.
Lima, a city with 10 million inhabitants, remained the most affected in the country, reaching a total of 87,478 cases, followed by the neighboring port of Callao, with 9,953, and the northern regions of Lambayeque, with 7,020; Piura, with 6,942, and Loreto, with 3,959.
The president of the Council of Ministers, Vicente Zeballos, reported, in turn, that so far 137 police officers have died and 7,793 are infected, 323 of whom remain hospitalized.
PATIENTS IN THEIR HOUSING
In a presentation before the plenary session of Congress, Zeballos explained that 85% of those infected with COVID-19 remain in their homes, since "they do not require hospitalization, but they do require medical attention, accompaniment and state assistance."
The Prime Minister also said that "a new economic subsidy" is being evaluated within the Executive to deliver to the most vulnerable population, as the quarantine for the health emergency has been extended until June 30.
He recalled that since the quarantine was issued, on March 16, the Executive has approved decrees that established the universalization of the right to health, the compulsory commercialization of generic drugs and the provision of financial aid.
Zeballos also highlighted the increase in the capacity of patient care, which has allowed 1,090 ICU beds and 10,965 hospital beds, with the intention of reaching 20,000 of these and 2,000 intensive care by the end of June.
INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the World Food Program (WFP) will grant $ 2 million to the Peruvian government to provide humanitarian assistance to the vulnerable population, including migrants and refugees who have been affected by the economic crisis. .
Of this contribution, which comes from multilateral funds, $ 1.5 million will go to a "cash transfer scheme" and $ 500,000 to strengthen the efforts of the Peruvian government to improve the humanitarian logistics chain.
Foreign Affairs explained that thanks to this initiative, the allocation of economic bonds that are delivered in Peru may be extended to some 14,000 additional beneficiaries, in addition to strengthening the coordination and logistical support that WFP gives to the National Institute of Civil Defense of Peru ( Indeci).

It will be implemented through the Economic Inclusion Project to complement the efforts of the Governments of the United States, Peru and humanitarian organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Lima, Jun 10 (EFE) .- Peru reached 208,823 patients with COVID-19 on Wednesday after registering a new peak of 5,087 new cases in the last 24 hours, while deaths are close to 6,000, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Health.
On day 87 of the declaration of emergency in the country, the health authorities have carried out 1,255,756 tests to date, with 28,065 applied on Tuesday, which yields a percentage of positivity to the virus of 16.6%.
This percentage doubles in the Amazon regions of Ucayali and Loreto, where they register 33.7 and 31.6% positivity, respectively, with 5,648 cases in the first and 6,719 in the second.
In the Lima region, where the capital is located, the percentage of positive cases of the disease is 19% with a total of 122,883, the highest number of infections in the entire country.

NEAR 10,000 HOSPITALIZED
The ministry's daily report added that the number of hospitalized patients increased to 9,916 people, thirteen more than on Tuesday, while those admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) fell to 1,065, twelve less than yesterday.
In the last hours, 5,102 people have been discharged after completing treatment, for a total of 98,031 patients recovered from the disease.

MORE THAN 1,000 DEAD PER ALLEGED COVID IN LORETO

Peru exceeds 220,000 cases of coronavirus
