Peru’s National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Control of Diseases CDC conducted its first multisectoral simulation in order to develop its quick response capability to avian flu or BirdFlu.

The CDC which is part of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) is working on an exercise to plan and prepare an early strategy to address a possible avian flu pandemic. The strategy aims to mitigate the risks and consequences of the disease by responding to threats effectively and promptly.

CDC Peru performed an intersectoral simulation in the face of a possible case of avian influenza in humans

• As of SE 08-2023, 119 cases of AH5 avian influenza have been confirmed in animals within the Peruvian territory. • Institutions such as the Ministry of Health, SENASA, SERFOR, SERNARP, Municipality of Ventanilla and Diresa Callao participated in the response simulation.

The National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC Peru) of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), carried out the first multisectoral drill in order to evaluate the ability to respond quickly to a probable case of avian influenza in humans.

The simulation led by the CDC Peru, was aimed at the health personnel of the RENACE, personnel of SENASA, SERFOR, SERNANP and municipalities, in order to standardize processes of detection, notification and response to the detection of a probable case of avian influenza in people in Peru.

In addition, as of SE 08-2023, 119 cases of AH5 avian influenza have been confirmed in animals in the country. Of the total, 116 (97.52%) correspond to birds and 3 (2.48%) to mammals. It is also known that the cases in birds have been distributed in the departments of Cajamarca (34), Lambayeque (20), Lima Callao (19), La Libertad (13), Ica (10), Piura (8), Ancash (6), Arequipa (3) and Junín (2). Meanwhile, cases in mammals were reported in Lima, Piura (02 in coastal areas) and 01 in the Huancayo-Junín Municipal Zoo.

In this context, it is valid to remember that on January 7 of this year (2023), the first human case of influenza A(H5) from the province of Bolívar in Ecuador was confirmed; being the first also in all of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Therefore, the CDC Peru considered it appropriate to carry out the drill together with institutions such as Senasa, Serfor, Sernarp, Municipality of Ventanilla and Diresa Callao in order to plan and prepare an anticipated strategy to mitigate the risks and consequences of a possible pandemic and analyze the resilient sustainable means to respond effectively.

Finally, to date, avian influenza A H5N1, evidence of dissemination in birds around the world, thereby increasing the risk of transmission to exposed people.

A total of 93 health professionals strengthen capacities in the national and regional response articulation

A total of 93 professional health leaders were trained in the First Pandemic Leadership and Results Management Program, carried out by the Ministry of Health (Minsa), through the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) Peru, and Management Sciences for Health (MSH).


The program seeks to accelerate response efforts in Peru in the face of COVID-19 and other possible public health emergencies that may arise. For the development of the program, an experiential learning methodology in emergency management was included, based on thousands of approaches tested by Health sector teams in more than 80 countries.


It lasted 15 weeks where topics were developed such as: leadership and management functions, identification of the team's challenges, analysis of the situation and definition of results, analysis of the most important challenge and development of an improvement project, alignment of actors and mobilization of resources, among others.


The registered participants belong to the regions of Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Ica, Pasco, Ucayali, Callao and Metropolitan Lima, and manages to strengthen the capacity of the human resource in the articulation of national and regional response.
