Peru's Dengue Outbreak Nears 79,000 Cases, with El Niño Threatening to Trigger a Second Wave

The Briefing:

Peru's national epidemiology authority recorded 78,912 dengue cases through October 23, 2026 — 122% above the same point in 2025 — alongside 72 confirmed deaths and 13 additional fatalities still under official investigation.
La Libertad leads all regions with 14,452 cases; Piura has surpassed 14,000 cases with at least 13 deaths, and Lima has crossed 6,500 contagions — a geographic expansion that is stretching national surveillance capacity thin.
CDC Perú issued epidemiological alert N.° 008-2026 on October 21, warning that El Niño 2026–2027 could fuel a second dengue wave alongside surges in leptospirosis (up 85.5% vs. 2025) and acute diarrheal disease across the country...

Peru records 91 deaths from dengue in 2026, with cases rising 153% compared to 2025
Forbes Peru Staff | November 6, 2026 @ 3:46:46 PM

The most affected regions are La Libertad, with 16,174 cases; Piura, with 14,761; and Lambayeque, with 11,506—all three located on Peru’s northern coast, where the disease is traditionally concentrated due to rainfall and high temperatures.

As of October 24, dengue cases in Peru reached 82,554—a 153% increase over the same period in 2025 (32,594)—though this figure remains well below the more than 260,000 infections recorded in 2024.

According to the Ministry of Health (Minsa) database, 91 deaths attributed to the disease have been reported as of the 42nd week of this year—a period coinciding with the onset of the heavy rains and high temperatures driven by the El Niño climate phenomenon.

The regions most affected by dengue are La Libertad, with 16,174 cases; Piura, with 14,761; and Lambayeque, with 11,506—all three located on Peru’s northern coast, where the disease is traditionally concentrated due to rainfall and high temperatures.

Additionally, in Lima—a region currently experiencing high temperatures, though not yet affected by intense rainfall—there have been 7,007 recorded cases of the disease. Last week, Health Minister Luis Dyer announced from Piura the purchase of an additional 1.1 million-plus doses of the dengue vaccine, noting that the vaccination is intended for individuals aged 10 to 20 and consists of two doses administered three months apart...
