Peru detected the first case of indigenous measles; there hadn't been since 2000
A ten-month-old baby, who lives in Lima, was infected with the disease and raised alarm in the country.

After more than two decades, Peru announced this Friday its first case of indigenous measles when the disease was confirmed in a baby in Lima, indicated the Ministry of Health.

“Peru has not had its own case of measles since 2000. The cases we have registered were imported,” the president of the National Institute of Health, Víctor Suárez, told the press.

“This is a wake-up call for the entire country and all families so that they can complete their vaccination systems,” said Suárez.

The last indigenous case in Peru was in 2000 in Callao, a port city neighboring Lima.

The new case that raised the alarm corresponds to a ten-month-old baby, who lives in Lima. Doctors have subjected the 21 people who had contact with her to the last week to be ruled out.

The Ministry of Health confirmed on January 29 a first imported case of measles in a 21-year-old young man, who became infected during a trip to Europe.

“We are facing a probability of reintroduction of measles,” Deputy Health Minister Ricardo Peña told reporters.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), measles registered a notable global increase in 2023, especially in Europe, but the disease had disappeared from Peruvian radars so far in the 21st century.

This viral disease is extremely contagious, more so than Ebola or the flu, for which there is no cure treatment.

According to the WHO, more than 1.8 million newborns in the region were not vaccinated against this disease between 2020 and 2022.

Minsa: Measles cases could be higher than those reported by the Government. These are the common symptoms
According to PAHO, patients infected with this disease could infect up to 18 people if they are within the population susceptible to contracting this disease.

The proliferation of measles contagion among citizens would be one of the main concerns of the Ministry of Health, which currently has two registered cases of the disease, both reported to reside in the city of Lima and which, to date, are being monitored to prevent possible subsequent infections.

The cases belong to a 10-month-old girl and a 21-year-old young man. However, the one that generates the most attention would be the latter because it was imported because he was traveling in Europe and presented symptoms upon arriving in our country.

Despite Minsa control, a report from El Comerció indicated that the Ministry's vaccination brigades would have detected at least three other cases in Surco, the same district where the home of the 10-month-old patient was reported. This would imply that there would be at least four infected people in that district alone, which has led to an epidemiological surveillance order being issued in this jurisdiction to prevent an even higher incidence of the disease.

Although so far the Ministry of Health has not reported an update on the number of infected patients, the Vice Minister of Public Health, Ricardo Peña, indicated that an infected person could infect up to 18 people if they belong to a moderately susceptible to contracting the disease.

For the researcher at the Scientific University of the South, Percy Mayta-Tristán, he also indicated to El Comercio that so far there is no information about a possible contact of the 10-month-old girl with a person who has been abroad, so that it is highly probable that it is a community contagion and that there may be at least one person in your environment who is a carrier of the virus. “We still do not know the magnitude of this measles outbreak in Lima,” he said...

Measles alert in Lima: the conditions that make the risk of contagion and spread extremely high
The Minsa reported that there are currently two confirmed cases that originate from Surco. Likewise, there are 34 other suspects, who are being investigated. In this regard, sources from this newspaper indicated that many of these cases also reside in the aforementioned Lima district. A single person with this disease is capable of infecting 18 others at a time.

There are two cases of measles in the country confirmed so far by the Ministry of Health (Minsa). These are a 21-year-old young man who contracted the disease during a trip to Europe (imported case) and a 10-month-old girl. Both in Surco. However, as El Comercio announced last week, these infections would not be the only ones.

The Minsa reported last Tuesday that currently, as a preventive measure, 34 cases have been selected that are under investigation, awaiting results of laboratory samples or awaiting obtaining a second blood sample. It is suspected that it would be measles.

In this regard, sources from this newspaper indicated that many of these cases reside in the same district as the confirmed cases: Surco.

This would be possible if the high level of contagion of the measles virus is taken into account. In that sense, the Vice Minister of Public Health, Ricardo Peña, commented that a single person infected with this disease, in the midst of a moderately susceptible population, is capable of easily infecting up to 18 people at a time.

It is worth specifying that according to the Minsa parameters, a case is defined as suspected of measles when the person presents any signs of the disease, such as fever and/or generalized maculopapular exanthematic rash (known as hives). Of the 34 cases under investigation, it was not indicated what type of symptoms they had.

In order to prevent a greater number of infections, the same sources detailed that house-to-house epidemiological surveillance is being carried out in Surco and other areas of Lima as part of the Minsa's response actions.

Likewise, the Minsa highlighted that together with the country's Regional Health Management and Directorates, blockade vaccination activities have been carried out in children under 5 years of age, as well as an active institutional and community search.

Meanwhile, on January 26, the National Center for Epidemiology, Prevention and Disease Control (CDC) issued an epidemiological alert in Peru due to the possible presence of more imported cases of measles (such as that of the 21-year-old young man). .

All health centers were urged to intensify the active search for possible similar cases and emphasized the importance of medical staff carrying out a thorough evaluation of any patient with a travel history, both national and international....
