Malaria cases in the Loreto region remain at a controlled level
June 7, 2021
According to report of epidemiological week 20.2021 - Diresa Loreto
Diresa Loreto performs standardization of criteria and responsibilities related to surveillance, diagnosis for the timely treatment of malaria

A total of 3,797 cases of malaria have been reported in the region so far this year, of which 2,924 (plasmodium vivax) and 875 (plasmodium falciparum). Compared to the same period of 2020, there is a decrease of 1,122 cases, informed the Loreto Regional Health Directorate through the report of epidemiological week 20.2021 of the Directorate of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

During the year 2020 and until the present week of 2021, the cases remain at the level of success, in 19 weeks the average number of malaria cases is 190 weekly cases that fluctuate between 118 minimum and 273 maximum, with a decrease in the last 7 weeks.

Of the 53 districts in the Loreto region, 37 districts report malaria. 81.46% of the cases are reported from 10 districts, the first two correspond to the province of Datem del Marañón (Andoas, Pastaza). One death from Malaría Falciparum of a 7-year-old boy from the Urarinas district was reported.

According to the risk stratification in 2021 and this week, there are 3 districts that are at very high risk in the Datem del Marañón Province (Pastaza, Andoas) and Soplin in the Requena province, 7 districts at high risk ( Yaquerana, Tigre, Trumpeteros, Morona, Urarinas, Alto Nanay and Torres Causana); 14 medium-risk districts (Mazan, Manseriche, Yavari, Napo, Ramón Castilla, Yaguas, Putumayo, Barranca, Alto Tapiche, Balsapuerto, Parinari, Teniente Manuel Clavero, Santa Cruz and Punchana), 13 low risk of Malaria (Lagunas, Yurimaguas, Nauta, Lieutenant César López Rojas, San Juan Bautista, Fernando Lores, Iquitos, Cahuapanas, Belén, Requena, Maquía, Las Amazonas and San Pablo).

Until EW 20-2021, of the 3,797 cases of Malaria, 47.88% correspond to the age group from 0 to 11 years (Child stage), of these 1.29% are under 1 year old; followed by the adult stage (from 30 to 59 years old) with 18.20% and in third place is the young stage (18 to 29 years old) with 16.93%. The maximum age for both species (vivax and falciparum) was 82 years and the minimum age was 2 months. Malaria Plasmodium Vivax predominates in all stages. Therefore, the Loreto Regional Health Directorate, through the Zero Malaria Plan, continues to establish the guidelines, standardization of criteria and responsibilities related to surveillance, diagnosis for the timely treatment of malaria for timely clinical recognition and correct case management in the framework of comprehensive health care.

To meet this objective, the assigned health personnel socialize malaria care with each person in charge of the IPRESS and local managers of the Metaxenic strategy with whom they are working on the functional organization and operationalization of the technical health standard for the care of malaria according to the eco-epidemiological strata identified, in order to systematize and evaluate in a timely and efficient manner the operational management and epidemiological indicators. Thanks to this articulated work, in 2021 there is a decrease of 1,122 cases unlike in 2020.

For knowledge: Plasmodium vivax is one of the most frequent and widely distributed parasites that cause the entire region. According to a study, both species vivax and falciparum can become complicated and fatal for the patient, which is why it is necessary to comply with the treatment according to the established schemes.
