BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- The Vermont Health Department is notifying patients who might have been exposed to whooping cough at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

About 75 Vermonters could have been exposed to pertussis at Dartmouth-Hitchcock where 120 staff members, including 50 Vermonters, have contracted the ailment, the Health Department said.

The Health Department is telling people who might have been exposed that if they have symptoms the should contact their physician or go to Dartmouth-Hitchcock to be evaluated, said Deputy State Epidemologist Susan Schoenfeld.

Vermont health officials are also investigating possible cases at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Whooping cough is a contagious bacterial infection of the respiratory tract. Symptoms often follow cold symptoms. Symptoms include: coughs that come in bursts and can be followed by a whooping sound or vomiting.
