Patna, Jan 7 (PTI) Three cases of rare Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS) associated with leprosy have been detected in Bihar which has raised an alarm in the state.

Associate Professor of Skin and Venereal Diseases in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) Dr Amar Kant Jha, who diagnosed the cases, said, "Only 12 IRIS patients, including the three in Patna, have been reported in the country."

In IRIS conditions, the patients immediately go into a state of leprosy reaction and the legions become more active and virulent. Their nerves become unbearably painful and their general condition sharply deteriorates, which may be fatal, he said.

Though IRIS was most commonly associated with pneumonia and tuberculosis, its association with leprosy was a rare occurrence, he said.
