A Pike County woman with "underlying health conditions" has become the third Pennsylvanian to die from swine flu, a state health official confirmed Tuesday night.

The 48-year-old died Saturday at a hospital in New York state, said state Department of Health spokeswoman Stacy Kriedeman. People with underlying health conditions "tend to be at risk for several complications," she added.

Ms. Kriedeman said she could not disclose the woman's name or at which hospital she died.

The Pocono Record newspaper in Stroudsburg reported the woman died at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, N.Y. Hospital officials said they could release no information.

Pennsylvania's first death attributed to the H1N1 virus, known as swine flu, was reported earlier this month when a 55-year-old Berks County woman died, according to the health department's Web site. The second death was in Philadelphia.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the state had 772 confirmed cases of the virus in 34 counties. Locally, there are nine confirmed cases in Lackawanna County, 63 in Monroe County, seven in Pike County, 14 in Luzerne County and one in Wyoming County. There are eight probable cases in Monroe County and one each in Wayne and Luzerne, according to the state's Web site.

Ms. Kriedeman stressed that common sense should prevail.

"If you're sick with flu, have symptoms, you should stay home from work or school."
