First flu death reported in Lancaster County as season ramps up over the holidays

Lancaster County has had its first flu-related death of the season amid increasing levels of infection over the holidays, according to health officials.
Three flu-related deaths have been reported statewide since October, and Lancaster General Hospital spokeswoman Mary Ann Eckard said Tuesday that one of them was an LGH patient in her 90s.

A seemingly fit 21-year-old man is among the 18 people who have died from influenza complications in Pennsylvania during the current flu season.
... So far this season, 18 flu deaths have been reported in Pennsylvania. Baughman is the only victim between the ages of 19 and 49. One person under the age of 18 also died from the flu. The rest of the Pennsylvania victims are over the age of 50.

Pennsylvania flu cases tapered off slightly during the week leading up to Saturday, but state officials say it's too early to know if the worst flu season in years has finally peaked.

Pennsylvania flu cases continue to slowly drop, prompting the Pennsylvania Department of Health to conclude the flu has likely peaked.
Still, the department pointed out it's not uncommon to experience a second wave of cases. However, the later wave typically involves so-called B strains, which generally don't make people as sick as do A strains.

The number of flu-related deaths in Pennsylvania continues to climb ? to 169 this year ? and the majority of those cases involve residents 50 or older.
Nineteen more cases were reported last week, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, raising the total to 169 deaths during the current influenza season which began in October. Of those, only five involved children and 158 involved Pennsylvanians over the age of 50. The majority of those ? 132 ? were people 65 or older.

Pennsylvania sets record with more than 121,300 reported cases of the flu in 2017-18 flu season

HARRISBURG ? There were more than 121,300 reported cases of the flu in Pennsylvania during the 2017-18 flu season, resulting in 256 deaths across the state, according to numbers released Wednesday by Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine.
