Pennsylvania Department of Health Confirms Two Additional Measles-Associated Deaths
Pennsylvania Department of Health has recorded four measles-associated deaths in 2026.
Getting vaccinated remains the best protection against measles, providing 97% lifetime protection after two doses.
September 15, 2026

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) today confirmed two additional measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania. Both individuals were unvaccinated. One individual lived in Jefferson County and the other lived in Mifflin County.

To protect the privacy of both individuals and their families, DOH will not be releasing any additional details that could personally identify them. While local officials in the respective counties where the deaths occurred may release more details about the deceased, DOH is bound by different laws that strictly limit what it can share publicly. The two additional deaths will be added to DOH’s measles dashboard Wednesday, as part of the regular update.

The best protection against measles remains getting fully vaccinated. The MMR vaccine, administered over two doses, boosts a person’s immune system and provides 97% lifetime protection.

“My thoughts are with the two families who lost loved ones to this highly-contagious virus, as Pennsylvania faces the worst measles outbreak in more than three decades,” said Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen. “We remain committed to working with our partners across Pennsylvania to stem this outbreak and prevent more deaths. That means ensuring people have the facts about measles and access to the MMR vaccine – which kept measles outbreaks at bay for decades.”

To determine that these cases met the criteria to be considered measles-associated deaths prior to announcing them, DOH conducted rigorous investigations with cooperation from the Jefferson and Mifflin County coroner’s offices. These investigations included confirming clinical evidence of a measles infection, a positive laboratory test, and that the death was not due to an unrelated cause. That process aligns with DOH’s detailed epidemiological case definition for determining a measles-associated death, which is available at pa.gov/measles. Additional factors, such as whether the individual was exposed to measles prior to their death and supporting medical records, were also considered.

DOH completed similar investigations when it reported two measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County on August 25, Pennsylvania’s first deaths of this kind in 35 years.

So far in 2026, DOH has confirmed 693 measles cases in 38 counties...

Five people died after contracting the disease and nearly 200 have been hospitalized.

Now, the state has reached another grim milestone: The outbreak has grown to 1,004 cases — more than any other state in the last three decades — with no sign of slowing down.

In just the past month, the state surpassed Texas and South Carolina in the number of infections that swept those states...

A Pennsylvania coroner announced the state's sixth measles-associated death this year, adding to the toll of the state's ongoing outbreak.

The Franklin County Coroner said in a statement that the death of a 39-year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with measles met the state's criteria for a measles-associated death. The statement did not identify her but said she had several health conditions.

A spokesperson for the coroner told NBC News that the woman was unvaccinated and the "primary cause of death was a probable acute cardiac event due to possible complications of the measles."...

HARRISBURG, DAUPHIN CO. (WOLF) — Pennsylvania has confirmed 1,222 measles cases across 42 of the state’s 67 counties so far this year, with adults making up most of the cases, according to state data.

Lancaster County measles cases reach 452 after biggest weekly increase since September
ANNE GARBER | Health reporter 5 hrs ago

Lancaster County’s measles cases continue to climb with 37 new cases in the past week, the highest rise in people sickened with measles in a seven-day period since early September.

The most recent cases round out the sixth month of the largest measles outbreak since 1991. So far, the virus has officially infected 452 people in Lancaster County and 1,260 people statewide.

On Wednesday, the state Department of Health added a new feature to its measles tracker dashboard, called an epidemic curve (epi-curve).

“An epi-curve shows measles cases over time, based on when a person’s rash began or when they were tested or reported to DOH, if rash onset is not available,” Department of Health representatives wrote in a press release. “Adding an epi-curve to the measles dashboard provides critical, near real-time context on how the outbreak is evolving .... Instead of seeing cases counts by month, residents can see this information each week and see whether measles transmission is actively accelerating, plateauing or declining. Further, because there can be a lag in the reporting of some cases to DOH after someone is sick, the dates in the epi-curve give a clearer picture of current community risk.”...
