Pennsylvania Department of Health Confirms Two Additional Measles-Associated Deaths
Pennsylvania Department of Health has recorded four measles-associated deaths in 2026.
Getting vaccinated remains the best protection against measles, providing 97% lifetime protection after two doses.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) today confirmed two additional measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania. Both individuals were unvaccinated. One individual lived in Jefferson County and the other lived in Mifflin County.

To protect the privacy of both individuals and their families, DOH will not be releasing any additional details that could personally identify them. While local officials in the respective counties where the deaths occurred may release more details about the deceased, DOH is bound by different laws that strictly limit what it can share publicly. The two additional deaths will be added to DOH’s measles dashboard Wednesday, as part of the regular update.

The best protection against measles remains getting fully vaccinated. The MMR vaccine, administered over two doses, boosts a person’s immune system and provides 97% lifetime protection.

“My thoughts are with the two families who lost loved ones to this highly-contagious virus, as Pennsylvania faces the worst measles outbreak in more than three decades,” said Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen. “We remain committed to working with our partners across Pennsylvania to stem this outbreak and prevent more deaths. That means ensuring people have the facts about measles and access to the MMR vaccine – which kept measles outbreaks at bay for decades.”

To determine that these cases met the criteria to be considered measles-associated deaths prior to announcing them, DOH conducted rigorous investigations with cooperation from the Jefferson and Mifflin County coroner’s offices. These investigations included confirming clinical evidence of a measles infection, a positive laboratory test, and that the death was not due to an unrelated cause. That process aligns with DOH’s detailed epidemiological case definition for determining a measles-associated death, which is available at pa.gov/measles. Additional factors, such as whether the individual was exposed to measles prior to their death and supporting medical records, were also considered.

DOH completed similar investigations when it reported two measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County on August 25, Pennsylvania’s first deaths of this kind in 35 years.

So far in 2026, DOH has confirmed 693 measles cases in 38 counties...

HARRISBURG, Pa. - There have been a total of 731 measles cases confirmed across 38 counties in Pennsylvania, according to a news release from the Department of Health (DOH).

The DOH says it is continuing its robust response to the ongoing measles outbreak and will continue to provide Pennsylvanians with updated information on cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Health officials warn of a measles exposure at the Philly airport
A traveler who was infected with the contagious disease was in Terminals B, C, D, F and E on the night of Sunday, Sep. 13.

Travelers who were in the Philadelphia International Airport on the night of Sunday, Sept. 13, might have been exposed to measles, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health said.

A person with the contagious viral disease traveled at Terminals B and F, and walked through areas of Terminals C, D and E to get to those locations. Health officials said the exposure took place from 7:25 p.m. Sep. 13 to 12:05 a.m. Sep. 14. The person was passing through Philadelphia and did not leave the airport.

The city's health department said this exposure is separate from an incident reported Friday, Sept. 11, in the neonatal intensive care unit at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia...

Schuylkill reports first case in measles outbreak; vaccinations available at Bloom Fair

BLOOMSBURG — Schuylkill County reported its first positive measles case as an ongoing outbreak has spread across 39 counties.

Only one case has been reported in the county, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, out of 792 total across Pennsylvania.

Two cases have been reported in Columbia County and eight in Northumberland County. None have been reported in Luzerne County...

The measles outbreak in Pennsylvania is continuing to grow with 55 new cases confirmed since Wednesday, according to an update from the state health department.

Friday's update brings the total number of measles cases so far this year in the state to 890 across 39 counties. At least 173 people have been hospitalized and four measles-associated deaths have been reported.

Mifflin County measles cases climb to 106

LEWISTOWN -- Mifflin County's measles count has climbed to 106, an increase of 13 cases in one week, as Pennsylvania surpassed 900 cases.

Only Lancaster County, with 363 cases, has reported more infections, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health's measles dashboard, updated Monday. Chester County ranks third with 83 cases.

Mifflin County had 93 confirmed cases on Sept. 21. The county has added 77 cases since Aug. 25, when the state reported 29.

Pennsylvania has recorded 903 cases in 39 counties this year, an increase of 111 cases since Sept. 21. Hospitalizations rose from 155 to 176 during the same period, while the number of measles-associated deaths remained at four...
