Week 49
"Widespread flu activity with a downward trend in flu cases:

* Flu-related Emergency Department (ED) visits are almost back to baseline.
* Visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) increased slightly from 1.4% during week 48 to 1.6% during week 49. This is the first increase recorded in six weeks. The ILI threshold for this time of the year is about 3%.
* 49 (35%) of all sentinel providers submitted data on time (by COB Monday); down from 52% the previous week. The target is 50%!
* ILI was below baseline in all regions of the state, figure 3.
* Of the 49 reporting sentinel providers, 9 (18%) reported ILI above baseline (3%).
* The total number of flu cases (A, B, Pandemic A/H1N1) reported to PA NEDSS increased slightly from 381 cases during week 48 to 400 during week 48. This increase is an artifact ? due to delayed data entry of cases from previous weeks.
* There was a decline in flu cases in all but one region of the state.
* The number of specimens tested by the state lab increased from during 42 week 48 to 93 specimens during week 49.
* 13 (14%) of the specimens tested during week 49 were positive for influenza, down from 31% the previous week"

One influenza-associated death was reported during week 51, down from 3 influenza deaths reported the previous week.

(1.9%) were due to influenza-like illness, up from 1.3% the previous week ? the state ILI baseline is 3%.

Flu-related Emergency Department (ED) visits declined to baseline levels at state and regional level.

Five (28%) specimens tested by BOL were positive for influenza; four flu type A's and one flu B.

Twenty six (26) influenza cases (all types) were reported during week 3, down from 39 reported the previous week. The weekly average for this time for the yr (last three seasons) was about 120 cases.
All (100%) subtyped influenza A viruses reported were 2009 influenza A (H1N1) viruses; no seasonal flu virus was isolated.

? Of the 11499 Visits to doctors reported by 41 (30%) of all PA sentinel providers, 160 (1.4%) were due to influenza-like illness (ILI), up from 1.2% the previous week ? the state ILI baseline is 3%.
?The percentage of visits to doctors was above baseline in the SW region of the state; also 4 (10%) sentinel providers reported ILI above 3%.
?Forty six (46) influenza cases (all types) were reported during week 4, up from 26 reported the previous week. The weekly average for week 4 during the last three seasons was about 225 cases ? so we are far below the usual.
?Six (6) pH1N1 cases were reported during week 4, up from 3 reported the previous week. The new H1N1 cases were isolated ? reported in five counties spread across two (SE and SW) regions of the state.
?Forty six (46) respiratory specimens were tested by BOL, up from 22 specimens tested the previous week.
?Three (7%) of the specimens tested by the state lab were positive for influenza; no seasonal flu virus was isolated.

* The overall number of influenza deaths and hospitalizations leveled off during the last five weeks and remain low.
The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza (P&I) was below the regional epidemic threshold.

Graph shows a total since May 2009 of 92 deaths (one from A/H3) There have been a total of 78 deaths this season.

1.2% of all Visits to doctors reported by PA sentinel providers were due to influenza-like illness (ILI), up from 1.1% the previous week – the state ILI baseline is 3%. The percent ILI was above baseline in the SW region of the state; also 4 (10%) sentinel providers reported ILI above 3%.

Three (11%) of the 28 respiratory specimens tested by BOL were positive for flu, all of them being pH1N1.

There was no increase in flu-related hospitalizations or deaths.

Incidentally, RSV is on the rise as flu activity declines to “no activity” levels

The proportion of ILI visits was below baseline in all regions of the state and only 5 (13%) of sentinel providers reported ILI above 3% - half of these were colleges.
There was no increase in flu-related Emergency Department (ED) visits during week 9.

Despite high levels of influenza activity reported in the southeastern states, minimal flu activity was reported in Pennsylvania during week 12:

? 0.9% of all Visits to doctors reported by PA sentinel providers were due to influenza-like illness (ILI), up from 0.7% the previous week ? the state ILI baseline is 3%. The percent ILI was below baseline all regions of the state and none of the sentinel providers reported ILI above 3%. ? 45 lab positive flu cases reported during week 12, same number as the previous week.

? Four (18%) of 22 flu specimens tested by BOL were positive for flu ? all were the Pandemic A/H1N1 strain (pH1N1). Note that almost 80% of specimens submitted to the state lab are testing negative for influenza. Meaning there are other viruses co circulating with influenza including; Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Human Metapneumovirus, Rhinovirus, Adenovirus and parainfluenza.

? No flu-related outbreak or ILI cluster reported during week 12.

? There was no increase in flu-related hospitalizations or deaths.

?Four lab positive flu cases reported during week 17, up from 3 reported previous week.
?None (0%) of 12 flu specimens tested by BOL were positive for flu. About 50% of all influenza viruses currently circulating are the pandemic A/H1N1 influenza strain. Other respiratory viruses may be co circulating with influenza including; Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Human Metapneumovirus, Rhinovirus, Adenovirus and parainfluenza.
