CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — An investigation has determined that the avian reovirus is responsible for killing hundreds of crows in Charlottetown’s Victoria Park.
Dr. Laura Bourque, a wildlife pathologist at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) in Charlottetown, said March 3 that necropsies have been taking place since people started bringing bags of dead crows in by the dozens over the Christmas holidays.
“At this point, we’re 99 per cent certain that it is reovirus that is causing this winter mortality," said Bourque, who is also a member of the Canadian Wildlife Health Co-operative. “On the better preserved (crows), we saw very repeatable signs of disease in the gastrointestinal tract, which are pretty typical of a virus that can cause this mass mortality in crows during the winter."...
