The Influenza Specialist Group (ISG) is today warning that high rates of influenza outbreaks have been confirmed in QLD, SA and NSW 1, but there is still time for most Australians, especially those in at-risk groups, to protect themselves and those around them.

The Australian Government?s Communicable Diseases Surveillance data shows that reported cases of influenza ? most notably the pandemic (H1N1) 2009 and influenza B ? have risen sharply 2. The confirmed number of notifications reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System (NNDSS) have increased by more than 200 percent since May 1, and is an indication that the peak flu season is now imminent in Australia.

While there was an unusually high number of diagnosed cases through Summer and Autumn 2011, four to five times the usual level 1, current data indicates that the main flu season will occur as usual during Winter and early Spring.

Experts are today urging people in at-risk groups and healthy Australians who wish to avoid infection to see their GP and seek vaccination now in order to protect themselves and avoid passing the infection on to others.

Flu cases four times higher than last year

AUSTRALIA is in the grip of a grim flu outbreak, with the number of influenza cases four times higher than a year ago.

Experts believe the rise could be linked to the sudden deluge of wet weather and floods earlier this year when there was an unusually high number of flu cases recorded.

Particularly high rates of influenza have hit NSW, Queensland and South Australia with the H1N1 virus, popularly known as swine flu, and influenza B the most common strains.

Figures from the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System show 7931 cases of influenza have been confirmed nationally so far this year, about four times higher than the 1989 cases recorded between January and July 2010.

The number of flu cases seen around the time of the floods in early 2011 were significantly higher than in 2010.
