PEAK has passed.
Flu cases fall in recent days significantly
15/02/2011 M.J.R.

Flu cases have decreased significantly in Cordoba in recent days. Data provided by the Office of Health show that from 31 January to 6 February has been a rate of 204 patients per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 244 cases by the same proportion of the population accounted for 23 to 30 January. This trend confirms the information already published by this newspaper that the peak of influenza episodes occurred during the week of 16 to 22 January, with 268 cases per 100,000 population.

The decrease in the incidence of the disease has almost coincided with the spring weather last week in Cordoba. In Spain, of 204 patients per 100,000 inhabitants had two weeks ago, has fallen in recent days to 179 cases. The highest peak flu season in Cordoba 2009/2010 was 380 per 100,000 patients, much higher than this year, 268 cases.

Since the beginning of the 2010-2011 season have been 1,011 reported serious cases of confirmed influenza hospitalized in 15 Spanish regions (including Andalusia), of which 89% were infected with H1N1 virus (influenza A). 16% of these cases were detected in less than 15 years, while the majority (67%) occurred in persons between 15 and 64. 76% percent had some risk factor that was necessary to vaccination, but in such cases, up to 80% had not received the vaccine this season. The Association of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery in Andalusia and Extremadura, Neumosur, confirms that 92% percent of hospitalizations for severe cases of flu in the region corresponds to influenza infection and that 79% of the cases included in groups recommended for influenza vaccination were not vaccinated
