SPOKANE, Wash. - Another Spokane County resident has died from complications linked to the H1N1 swine influenza. The woman in her 50s had no known underlying health conditions.

"We are saddened to learn that the H1N1 swine flu virus has led to another death in our community," said Dr. Joel McCullough, Health Officer for Spokane Regional Health District. "It is a tragic reminder of how important it is to be vigilant in preventing the spread of the flu and for people in high-risk groups to get vaccinated."

Although most cases of influenza can be safely managed at home, anyone who has an underlying health condition who develops symptoms of the flu should contact their healthcare provider. About 70 percent of people who have been hospitalized with the 2009 H1N1 virus have had one or more medical conditions previously recognized as placing people at "high risk" of serious flu-related complications. H1N1 flu symptoms typically include:

The Health District has begun shipping H1N1 injectable vaccine to many area healthcare providers and will be offering a free public clinic for people who qualify for the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine. The Health District will be scheduling appointments for 3,000 nasal spray vaccinations for the upcoming free public clinics:

SPOKANE -- A 50-year-old woman from Spokane County died after contracting the H1N1 flu virus, the Spokane Regional Health District confirmed Monday Morning.

The district reports the seasonal flu has also arrived in Spokane, with two cases confirmed Monday as well. A health district spokeswoman says those cases come at a typical time of year for seasonal flu, between October and March. The number of cases of seasonal, or type B flu, tend to peak in late January into February.

"We have basic recommendations at this time," said Dr. Joel McCullough, Health Officer for the Spokane Regional Health Dist. "We want people to get a seasonal flu vaccination and the H1N1 vaccine if they are in a prioritized group."

McCullough says people can protect themselves against the spread of both the seasonal and the H1N1 flu viruses by taking precautions like washing their hands frequently, staying at home when sick, and covering their coughs and sneezes.

With confirmation of the first couple of cases of seasonal flu, the Spokane Regional Health Dist. has set up a seasonal flu hotline at (509) 324-1643.

Re: Spokane County - Woman in her 50s dies from H1N1 swine influenza

This woman in her 50's, Spokane County's 5th death from H1N1 is my mother. A wonder, selfless person who had so much life left to live. She was hospitalized the day before she was supposed to fly to Hawaii to visit myself and my family. She fought an agonizing fight with this virus for over 3 weeks. I hate reading these articles and seeing no name, I do understand privacy laws and thats why there is no name. Spokane Counties 5th h1n1 victim was Patricia Ann Stively and the loss of her has left her 5 children and 12 grandchildren heartbroken. This flu is very serious and it angers me to no end when I hear about people or their children with flu like symptoms going to work, or to school, or shopping. Just because the virus didnt make you deathly ill, doesnt mean that it wont kill whoever you come into contact with and spread it to. My mom wouldnt even go to the hospital without a mask on so she didnt make anyone else sick, if only whoever gave her the virus was so thoughtful.

Re: Patricia Ann Stively, a wonder, selfless mother of 5, grandmother of 12 died of H1N1

I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for stepping forward and letting us know your mom. By doing so, you've helped educate people about how devastating A/H1N1 can be and by your example, have likely inspired people to get vaccinated.

Alan Cleaver of the Whitehaven News (England) wrote in his Oct. 18, 2009 blog on privacy:

Sunday, October 18: Intrusion into grief

Is wanting to know about the lives of those who died from swine flu an intrusion into grief? The short answer is yes if the family and friends would prefer not to talk about it. But many do and I for one am glad that they do tell us about their loved one's lives. It stops these deaths just being cold statistics and makes us aware that some lovely people have been brought down by this vicious bug. And it shakes off any complacency that swine flu is just something that happens to "other people". Those 'other people' are perhaps envisaged by most of the public as still weak, sickly old people. Far from it. Health officials seem quick to say they're not realeasing any more details out of respect for the family but I don't suppose I'm the only journalist to have received a call from the bereaved family the day after publication wanting to know why we didn't get in touch to find out more about their loved one's life. The decision to talk or not to talk must be the family's and not the well intended but misguided view of the health authority press office. And if anyone needs reassurance that talking about the loss of a loved one need be a morose affair rather than a celebration of that person's life just look at the many wonderful tributes to David Hayes. ...

Re: Patricia Ann Stively, a wonder, selfless mother of 5, grandmother of 12 died of H1N1

Please accept my condolences. She was too young to die. Perhaps someone reading this will think twice about exposing another person when they know they are ill. I wish the same thing had happened when a woman brought her child, sick with chicken pox, to work with her. The child infected infected a very dear and valued friend who died as a result. Thank you for stepping forward and sharing her name in your time of grief.
