Patient with suspected MERS virus admitted to Czech hospital

A Prague hospital admitted a patient who may have contracted the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, a spokesman for the hospital said on Tuesday.

The patient had traveled from South Korea, where an outbreak has infected 154 people and killed 19 since it was first diagnosed in May. He is staying in an isolation ward at Prague's Bulovka hospital pending tests, the spokesman said.

"He was admitted due to his symptoms, where he had been, and his condition," Martin Salek said.

There have been no confirmed cases of the virus in the Czech Republic so far.

Prague?s Na Bulovce Hospital has it first patient with a suspected case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The patient is a 25-year-old man who was recently in South Korea as a tourist.

Test results will be known Wednesday morning. The man returned from South Korea on May 30 and since then has exhibited respiratory symptoms, according to Health Minister Svatopluk Němeček, who made the announcement at a quickly scheduled press conference.

"Two weeks after returning to the Czech Republic he came down with a cold and two days later a high temperature. Because he stayed in South Korea he was transferred to the infectious ward at Na Bulovce ? and samples were collected to test for MERS," Němeček said.

Tests have shown a Czech man hospitalised in Prague suspected of being infected with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) does not have the potentially deadly virus, Health Minister Svatopluk Nemecek said on Wednesday.

A 25-year-old man from South Korea was admitted to the Prague Bulovka hospital on Tuesday after it was believed he may have contracted the MERS virus.

The patient was kept in an isolation ward at the hospital pending tests.
