Patient With Ebola-Like Symptoms Being Treated at D.C. Hospital - travel history to Nigeria recently

A patient with Ebola-like symptoms is being treated at Howard University Hospital, a hospital spokesperson confirms.

The patient had traveled to Nigeria recently.

That person has been admitted to the hospital in stable condition, and is being isolated and tested.

"In an abundance of caution, we have activated the appropriate infection control protocols, including isolating the patient," said hospital spokesperson Kerry-Ann Hamilton in a statement. "Our medical team continues to evaluate and monitor progress in close collaboration with the CDC and the Department of Health."

Hamilton did not share further details about the patient, citing privacy reasons, but said the hospital will provide updates as warranted.

Nigeria is not a serious Ebola exposure risk at this point, unless he had contact with someone from Liberia, Guinea, or Sierra Leone while traveling or while there.

The last case of Ebola in Nigeria was isolated on August 31, according to the US CDC:

so they are at 33 days without a case, more than the maximum incubation period.

Messaging from the CDC on Nigeria has always been qualified.

Even in the last few days Frieden has said Nigeria was not completely out of the woods. Whether that's because they had cases they couldn't follow up or the likelihood of more imported cases isn't clear.

WHO numbers there, considering the 250 high risk exposures from the Port Harcourt doctor and only two additional cases, both family members seems unlikely.

There has been a lot of spin on Nigeria and little transparency.

WHO numbers there, considering the 250 high risk exposures from the Port Harcourt doctor and only two additional cases, both family members seemed unlikely.

There were three confirmed cases who contracted Ebola from Dr. Enemuo: his wife, his sister, and a female patient who he operated on (who later died of Ebola).

The reason they aren't officially out of the woods yet is that they are not quite at 42 days since the isolation of the last case; but at this point, there are no cases in hospital and all contact monitoring has stopped as they have all reached 21 days.

I think Nigeria was extremely transparent; read the semi-weekly updates in the "Ebola - Nigeria" forum for details.
