In hindsight, Mrs Sword said there were strange symptoms accompanying what she thought was a cold or flu.

"Her fever was persistent, she was lethargic, clingy and wobbly on her feet, but I thought this was because she was weak from not eating.

"She also had jerky movements while sleeping, and urine retention was another indicator that something was not quite right.''

Although most children with HFMD present with sores or blisters on their hands, feet and face, Bethany did not.

In March this year, NSW Health Department issued an alert to doctors, childcare centres and the general community after a rise in the number of children contracting EV71....
