Paraguay Estimates Dengue Magnitude

Asuncion, Jan 24 (Prensa Latina) Two Paraguayans have died from hemorrhagic dengue fever in an epidemic that puts some 600,000 susceptible to contract it, authorities from the Paraguayan Public Health Ministry admitted Tuesday.

The data corresponds to those who suffered the disease during earlier epidemics in 1988 and 1989, said Dr. Gualberto Pinanez, general director of Epidemic Surveillance in Asuncion.

Ten percent of these people have the greatest possibility to become sick in this epidemic, warned the doctor, who met with authorities from the Pan American Health Organization today.

"Aggressiveness is a characteristic of the current virus and we expect there will be a lot of sick people," Dr. Pinanez said..

To date 600 cases have been reported as suspicious and health authorities insist the only prevention against the epidemic is elimination of breeding places for mosquitoes in homes and communities.
