Paraguay confirmed 6 cases of infection with the Zika Virus

[h=2]The Ministry of Health confirmed this morning the presence of 6 cases of Zica in Pedro Juan Caballero virus that affects young and old.[/h]
The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Dr. Maria Teresa Baran said the screening was done after the verification of an exponential increase in fevers in the past four weeks in the said town of Amambay.

Zika virus is transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti and the symptoms are similar to dengue, meaning the person has a fever, rash, muscle, joint and eye pain, and may be accompanied by conjunctivitis.

The Health Ministry reiterated that no vaccines or treatments against the virus and urged the public to immediate consultation to prevent complications and spread of the disease.

Zika virus arrived in the country and there are six infected



Public Health confirmed the first six cases of Zika in our country, all in Pedro Juan Caballero. The disease has symptoms similar to dengue and mosquito transmits the same.

Laboratory analysis allowed to confirm the entry Zika to Paraguay, in the border department of Amambay, specifically in its capital, Pedro Juan Caballero.

The Ministry of Health decided to verification after detecting a significant increase in fevers in the past four weeks.

The deputy minister, Maria Teresa Baran announced that the intensified surveillance and border and strengthened strategy to mitigate the impact of this new virus.

On 27 November 2015, the National IHR Focal Point of Paraguay notified PAHO/WHO of 6 laboratory-confirmed autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection in the city of Pedro Caballero, which is located in the northeast of the country and shares borders with Brazil.

The diagnoses were made by the national reference laboratory, the Central Public Health Laboratory of the Ministry of Health, through reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) technique. Cases were identified from clusters of febrile patients whose samples tested negative for dengue and chikungunya. They presented with fever, headache, myalgia, arthralgia, retroocular pain and nausea. Their age ranges from 14 to 45 years old, and half of them are female. Cases have been managed on an outpatient basis in different health care services of the health care network. Investigations are ongoing.

Paraguay estimated 2000 cases of zika at the border with Brazil

ASUNCION, Paraguay, Jan. 30, 2016.- Paraguay estimated that there are between one and 2000 probable cases of Zika at the border with Brazil where weeks before the circulation of the virus was detected, reported the Ministry of Public Health.

Health authorities are monitoring some 150 pregnant women in the region located about 500 kilometers north of Asunci?n by the possibility that cases of microcephaly appear in babies whose mothers were affected by the disease in Brazil.

We begin to detect the virus zika in November. We are seeing an increase in cases that information would have to be awaiting the first cases of microcephaly probably in March, said the director of the Ministry of Health, Hair Agueda. We are doing ultrasound monitoring of pregnant women to detect early if there microcephaly.So far we have not detected, nor we have detected cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a type of paralysis , he added.

The country is in epidemiological alert -present circulation of dengue virus for more than a decade, the chinkingunya and the zika, which are transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. The ministry has six cases of Zika laboratory confirmed.
