A second case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Papua New Guinea, prompting a lockdown in East New Britain province.

A second case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Papua New Guinea, prompting a 21-day isolation period for East New Britain province to allow contact tracing.

Prime Minister James Marape said the patient was a 40-year-old woman from a village in the Kokopo district, The National newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Fearful Papua New Guinea calls for WHO virus help

Papua New Guinea has asked for World Health Organization help after a rapidly spreading new coronavirus outbreak sparked preparations for large-scale community transmission in the under-resourced country.

Having mostly dodged the COVID-19 pandemic until now, Papua New Guinea reported Thursday it had detected three new cases in the previous 24 hours, bringing the total to 30 -- up from just 11 on Sunday.

With limited coronavirus testing and many positive cases found in health workers, there are fears the virus may have a stronger foothold than those detected cases may indicate...

PNG imposes nine new covid control measures as cases climb to 31

Papua New Guinea’s Pandemic Controller David Manning has issued nine new control measures as the country’s cases have increased to 31.

He said there was a high likelihood of expanded community transmission and while there were no new cases in the provinces since April, it was known that testing had been limited.

Pandemic Response Dr Paison Dakulala has appealed to everyone to take seriously all health measures against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as PNG’s cases increases to 39.

Dr Dakulala who is also acting Health Secretary made the call while announcing seven new cases of COVID-19 confirmed within the last 24 hours in the National Capital District. Out of the seven, four are health workers.

“We cannot afford to play around. The cases are being reported every day now. The new cases were confirmed at midday today and they are now all at the Rita Flynn isolation facility,” said Dr Dakulala.

Of the seven new cases, four are considered mild while only one had difficulties in breathing so was put on oxygen but is now improving. All are Papua New Guineans except for an expatriate employed with a government organisation.

Dr Dakulala said one of the cases is a staff with the National Department of Health so the NDoH headquarters at Aopi Building is going through a decontamination process. The building will be open on Wednesday.

“Rita Flynn has a 72-bed capacity. When we reach the capacity, we may have to consider other possibilities, including home quarantine,’’ said Dr Dakulala...
